DECADES

by the partae

What is your name and role within Decades?
My name is Emma Cameron and I’m the singer and one of the guitarists in Decades.

How did you start?
The band started about 10 years ago when I was in high school and wanted to start a band that actually played shows outside of school. So I met Dan (drummer) at a music college he was studying at and it all started there from humble pop-punk roots. Over the years it’s grown and developed to what and who we are now. I personally started playing guitar at age 8 or 9.

 Where are you based?
Christchurch and Auckland, New Zealand

Please give an example of your music writing process?
Just keep fucking around until something good comes out.

What are you working on right now?
We’re working on putting a new live set together for the release tour of our album The Truth and Other People in July!

What is your gear setup?
My main guitar is my Fender Jag HH, and I use a humble selection of fuzz (fuzzy factory), drive (OCD), octave (POG) and EQ pedals. I like it to be pretty simple!

What do you like to do outside of music and does it affect your music?
I’m also a graphic designer, web developer, social media marketer… amongst a whole bunch of other things. I suppose a ‘content creator’ but I do a lot of management, admin, and publishing, too. Absolutely it affects our music – it means we can be pretty autonomous in our entire presence because I won’t let anyone else do it… ha!!

How would you describe your music genre?
Rock music.

Do you know any music theory?
Anything that is crucial to maintain to do what we do. Everything else flew out the window 6 months after high school.

What are your plans for the future?
That’s a big question! Generally – keep growing what we’re doing and have fun.

How did you get into music?
I’m not sure there is ever a definitive answer to that question – we hear our mothers heart beat like a kick drum in the womb – so I suppose, then? I was a dancer from age 5 so I guess I developed a love for rhythm and art, moving in to picking up a guitar at aged 8 or 9 and realising it was something I was naturally good at – which naturally progresses in to seeing what other musicians and artists are doing and being in to it.

What are you listening to at the moment?
I’m listening to an array of music lately – today specifically though I’ve been listening to Muse, Hole and Highly Suspect for something we’re working on.

Who are your top 5 influences and icons?
It changes regularly. But lifetime inspiration for me is Michael Jackson. Artists who are inspiring me at present would be Gwen Stefani/No Doubt, Alanis Morrisette, Paramore and Muse.

When are you playing next?
We’re excited to be going on a nationwide New Zealand tour in July to celebrate the release of our album The Truth and Other People.
