COURTNEY BARNETT & KURT VILE
Debut LP Lotta Sea Lice out today via Milk! / Matador
Praise for Lotta Sea Lice
“Deadpan, observant, wily guitar-strumming songwriters…As duet partnets on the album Lotta Sea Lice, they meet on a musical common ground of folk-rock that shades into psychedelia, though they’re well aware of punk and grunge.” – New York Times
“It’s a six-minute space-folk opus that finds solace in earplugs, natural beauty, and creating art with somebody who shares your vision.” – Pitchfork on ‘Over Everything’ named Best New Track
“Two of indie rock’s sharpest songwriters are releasing a collaborative album full of autumn guitar prettiness and warm, wry lyrics.” – Rolling Stone
“Two of the most distinctive singer/songwriters to recently rise in indie rock now blend their dry wits and lackadaisical charm.” – The Atlantic
“Melbourne’s Courtney Barnett and Philly’s Kurt Vile are cut from the same mop of hair. Both write slowly unfolding, loosely swaying rock ‘n’ roll songs spun from long tales and longer yarns, which unspool as they chase the thread to psychedelic ends.” – NPR
“Lotta Sea Lice, Barnett and Vile’s first collaborative album together, makes for a remarkably sublime pairing that brings out the best in each artist, an unexpected gem that sits near the top of either’s discography.” – Consequence of Sound
“The perfect synthesis of the two artist’s sounds and really everything you could hope for from such a collaboration. It just all feels so effortless.” – Under The Radar
“Lotta Sea Lice is going to be an essential fall album for watching the leaves change.” – UPROXX
“Barnett and Vile make a dazed, melancholy duo; Barnett’s restrained punk mingles with Vile’s twang to make a track that’s perfect listening for gazing out a window, wishing it was a little bit warmer.” – Vulture
Today sees the release of Lotta Sea Lice, the irresistible album born of collaboration between Philadelphia’s Kurt Vile and Melbourne’s very own Courtney Barnett. The record, which has already garnered wide-spread critical acclaim and spawned the gorgeous sprawling singles ‘Over Everything’and ‘Continental Breakfast’, will be released on Barnett’s own label Milk! Records alongside Matador Records.
With Lotta Sea Lice Barnett and Vile have delivered something utterly miraculous, an instant-classic record which sounds as if the two have played together for decades. This is a conversation between friends, documented in raw, unvarnished song form, brimming with personal history, crackling with energy and shot through with humour. There’s an unforced ease to the record helped the fact that the pair have been not just friends, but hardcore fans of each other’s work for years, and have also roped in colleagues such as Mick Turner and Jim White of the Dirty Three, Stella Mozgawa from Warpaint and even Mick Harvey to play.
Apart from the aforementioned singles and a bevy of originals from both Barnett and Vile, Lotta Sea Licefeatures a blistering version of Jen Cloher’s ‘Fear Is Like A Forest’, a gorgeous harmony-laden version of Belly’s cult 90’s classic ‘Untogether’.
Lotta Sea Lice has already been awarded critical accolades, from the likes of Pitchfork, Guardian, Loud and Quiet, Q and Uncut, which made it their Album of the Month. Their US tour, which kicked off this week, has also sold out, taking in dates in Joshua Tree, LA, Seattle, Chicago and more.
