“…an upbeat moment of craftful pop music” – Pilerats
” Too fragile to hold and so sweet it’ll hurt – but in a great way.” – Claire Mooney, triple j
“…we have every reason to believe Chymes is here to stay.” – Purple Sneakers
Chymes unveils ethereal new single and video, ‘Sleepless‘ premiering via Pilerats and receiving its first spin on triple j Unearthed’s TOPS this week. The latest slice of glistening electronic-pop from the Central Coast singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist, ‘Sleepless’ signals a new era for the project.
A meeting of lush, multidimensional production and trademark diaphanous vocals, ‘Sleepless’ traces the shifting dynamic of a platonic and not-so-platonic relationship. In Chymes own words, “‘Sleepless’ is about crossing and blurring the lines in a friendship or relationship, where you end up falling into a trap of what’s familiar and comfortable, rather than what’s right or best for you or the other person. It’s really easy to pretend that the routine you’ve got with someone is fine and never address the situation, stuck in the familiarity of using each other to make yourself feel better and not really wanting to stop and ask yourself, are these true feelings or not?
Mesmerizing visuals arrive alongside the track, finding Chymes in a hazy pastel pink dreamscape – an other-worldy bedroom scene dripping in multi-coloured glowing lights as she tackles this inward struggle. Chymes continues, “You end up lying awake at night thinking that this should stop, but also that you don’t want it to. The production brings a powerful, upbeat vibe to hint at feelings of liberation from this self-realisation of mistakes, as well as a playful vocal delivery to give a sense of not taking it too seriously”.
‘Sleepless’ arrives after a whirlwind year for Chymes. The project received recognition on a global scale after the chart-topping Korean boy band BTS tweeted about single, ‘Dreaming‘, landing Chymes in several Global Viral 50 Spotify Charts including Japan, Phillipines, Malaysia, Thailand, Turkey, as well as charting on the Korean Melon charts. Chymes have found strong support at home as well as abroad, with adds to triple j Unearthed, spins on triple j and backing from taste-makers like Acid Stag, Cool Accidents,Pilerats, Purple Sneakers and more.
Having garnered a reputation for captivating live performances, Chymes hits the festival stage this December with a special performance at Lost Paradise festival in the Glenworth Valley. Evolving from bedroom-studio project to internationally recognised electronic-pop project, Chymes continues to carve out a space that’s entirely her own.
