Chloe Bodur
Where are you currently based?
Brighton.
Please tell us a little behind what influenced the writing of your debut track ‘Glory’:
Moving away from London, going through a break-up and feeling isolated.
Where and when did you record ‘Glory’
At Small Pond Recording Studios in Brighton, mid August.
Your style has been described as neo-soul, jazz and pop, embodying emotional rawness and unapologetic lyricism which has been resonating with listeners all over the UK.   Where have these influences come from and why do feel that people can relate so much to what you’re doing?
I used to dance about 8 hours a week which meant i was digesting a lot of pop. The soul and jazz influences come from my parents and the music I grew up around. I’m really glad the music is resonating with people. I think it has something to do with the different elements each person involved in the making of the Glory brought to the song. I also think the ideas and feelings covered in the lyrics are relatable to a lot of people in their own way.

Glory “thematically focuses on vulnerability and the underlying sense of loneliness”. Bodur reveals, “It was originally written as a poem about youth trying to find love in themselves and in others and how one correlates with the other”. As a self-confessed romantic, Bodur conveys her heartfelt introspection through sultry harmonies, which ride atop a hybrid of ambient neo-soul, smooth jazz arrangements and soulful melodies.
When and how did you first get into playing music and songwriting?
I think I was sixteen when I wrote my first ‘song’ although I never finished it and it had no structure and it was just a hot mess. I still need to improve as an instrumentalist and hopefully will only become a better songwriter as I get older.
You and your band are very fresh and continue to study at the music college in Brighton (BIMM), whilst writing and recording more singles which will be out next year, how did the band form and has being in a band altered how you write music?

I met all members of my band in and around Brighton/uni. Theres a nice jazz scene in Brighton and theres always jazz-jams happening across the town. I went to one at a pub when I first moved down and it looked like I was the only person there under 70. After one of the songs ended though, I saw a young lad in a hoodie bounce off the stage from where the drum kit was. I couldn’t believe that such a high standard of playing had come from someone my age so I went and spoke to him. Thats how I met Jono who has been my drummer ever since. He’s the only one in the band who I’ve never played a show without.

Being in a band has defiantly changed how I write. I’ll write with a full band in mind now rather than just focused on chords and a top line. It allows for much more freedom and creativity. I’ve also learnt a lot just by being around James, Jono, Malte, Matt and Sergio- they’re all incredible musicians and they inspire me everyday.

“Glory” opens with funk-fuelled guitar riffs, slowly transitioning into Bodur’s smokey vocals. With a distinct coolness to her timbre, complex, syncopated drum grooves and hypnotic jazz melodies, Bodur and her band have succeeded in composing a song which is at the fore-front of it’s genre. Produced by UK Top 10 charting producer JD.Reid (Mabel, Katy B, Sinead Harnett, D Double E) and mastered at the famed Abbey Road Studios by Alex Gordon (The Kooks, Raye, Sigrid, Circa Waves), the single has already received the stamp of approval from industry professionals.
Who are you listening to at the moment?
A lot of Rex Orange County.

What can we expect for the future?
Some Live Sessions we filmed this month are being released early next year.
When and where are you playing next?
I’ll be releasing details of my headline show in London next year on my socials (Facebook, Instagram, Twitter) soon.
Favourite food and place to hangout?
I love food more than anything in the world literally theres nothing I won’t eat. I ate a chicken foot the other day thinking it was squid and have 0 regrets. Favorite food though has to be a spaghetti bolognese (basic I know but a pure classic, won’t ever let you down). Fave place to hang out is at home, of course.
