Step into the distant future as Chela unveils the bedazzled, bold hologram-filled visuals for her EP title-track, ‘Delivery’, premiered via Billboard overnight.
Set in the year of 2069, this high-tech clip explores the idea of someone’s soul-mate existing in another era, or even another realm. Chela explains that she ‘wanted to create that same sense of longing, loneliness yet hopefulness I sing about in the song with the visual.’ In this case, it’s the feeling of an intimate connection between Chela’s dancing hologram and the video’s protagonist who sports a tattoo-tribute to Chela’s with her birth and death year (a date that’s been confirmed in real life to Chela by two seperate clairvoyants).
To convey her futuristic narrative, Chela called on the talents of cinematographer Stefan Duscio (who shot two clips for Beyonce’s 2013 self-titled visual album) and art-director Marni Kornhauser (Courtney Barnett, Client Liaison, LCD Soundsystem). Chela also teamed up with Aisha Kuryana, who has danced on-stage with her in the past, to choreograph the infectious routine performed by their holograms. Producer Zena Bartlett says of the experience ‘When Chelsea approached me to produce the ‘Delivery’ music video I read the treatment and loved the concept. It stood out to me as a unique vision I was interested in helping bring to life.”
This video follows the release of Chela’s second EP Delivery, which was met with industry acclaim and support from triple j, FBi, FADER, Forbes, NPR, Purple Sneakers, Fashion Journal, FBi Radio, i-D, Noisey, and an addition to Spotify’s Pop’N’Fresh playlist. Chela recently surpassed 20 million streams across her catalogue and has performed for huge audiences at festivals like SXSW and Coachella. The prolific collaborator also boasts collaborative credits with the likes of Paces, Goldroom, Clubfeet, Banoffee and more.
Recently dishing out more irresistible moves (in non-holographic form) touring Australia in support of Client Liaison’s ‘The Real Thing’ tour, Chela returns to the stage again in December as main support for New York’s Gus Dapperton.
i-D recently summed up Chela as a “multi-talented artist who’s creative output seems limitless.” With additional music and choreography passion projects to come in 2020 as well as a debut fashion line launch, is there anything she can’t do? One thing’s certain. There’s no telling where this prolific creative will pop up next.
