“The two singles showcase the versatility of Efendi’s lo-fi sound and how it’s incapable of being boxed up”
[On ‘Morphine’ / ‘Body By The Water’] – Pilerats“Jangly, tumbling indie rock with a sure sense of melody” – Bandcamp (‘New and Notable’)
“Chakra has poured moody, raw emotion in to their music and you’d wanna keep an eye on (them) into the future.” – Declan Byrne, triple j
Bold and brooding, ChakraEfendi‘s new double A-side release ‘Morphine’ / ‘BodyByTheWater’, premiered earlier this week via Pilerats, presents the Brisbane songwriter like never before. Paired with an assortment of live dates, Chakra will be bringing the release all across the East Coast throughout October and November.
Two wonderfully diverse and engrossing tracks, Chakra uses each soundscape to paint a rich and melancholic picture of their earlier life, during times of assimilation and isolation. Contrasting the dark and gritty guitar riffs with lush string arrangements and bright piano tones, both ‘Morphine’ and ‘Body By The Water’ each share a delicate balance of eeriness and optimism and push the boundaries of indie rock as a whole.
“I feel like this release is a great representation of my personal growth, artistically and consciously,” Chakra explains, “Although I don’t believe that the songs are an accurate representation of who I am now, I do believe that they are the perfect documentation of maturity, providing insight into who I was at the time of writing them.”
From what started as a series of demos which attracted over 135,000 streams on Soundcloud, Chakra’s went on to release their debut EP Until the Children Grow Old last year, gaining strong online and radio support with adds to FBi rotation, play on triple j’s Home& Hosed, Double J, a spot on Spotify‘s ‘Chords + Cardigans‘ playlist, a spotlight feature on Bandcamp‘s ‘NewandNotable’ as well as support from LNWY, MTV and rage.
Expanding to a five-piece live, Chakra Efendi and their band have spent the past year garnering a reputation as a must-see live act. showcasing at BIGSOUND 2019, as well as supporting the likes of GUM, TheseNew SouthWales, Fritz, TheOcean Party, FLOWERTRUCK and IV League. No stranger to the festival stage either, Chakra has performed at tastemaker festivals Gizzfest and AgainsttheGrain.
Hitting the road again at the tail end of the year, Chakra will be supporting fellow BIGSOUND buzz act Micra across multiple dates, alongside a number of other intimate gigs and festivals.
