CALEB CALLOWAY

by the partae
How did you start?
I’ve always been involved with music since a kid but when I moved to NYC to study audio engineering I really got into going out to clubs and listening to electronic music. After about a year in NYC I really got in to playing and strictly making house music.
Where are you based?
Right now I’m kind of all over the place but when I’m in Europe I’m based in Dusseldorf Germany and when I’m touring in the US or South America I spend my time in NYC.
Please give an example of your music process?
My musical process is kind of simple when I’m inspired I create no matter where I am. I don’t need a big fancy studio I just need to be in the mood a  good example of that is my first track on Desolat “Avion” which means airplane is Spanish I named it this way because the whole process of the production was done on airplanes while I was touring around Europe.
What are you working on right now?
Right now I’ve been finishing up a whole batch of remixes for different labels so I can then focus on finishing my EP I’m working on for Desolat and then focusing on just doing solo projects for the near future. I’m also getting together ideas for an album which I really want to work on exclusively in 2018.
What is your gear setup?
I mostly produce on the road and I’ll do everything in the box on Logic Pro but I have a couple studios I use frequently as well. As for specific gear I’m into all the Roland gear 303 909 and 808 I frequently use in my production. I have a Apogee Duet I use on the road as my interface.
What do you like to do outside of music and does it affect your music?
I love to spend time and travel with my girlfriend as much as I can. I’m also really into sports I’m a HUGE soccer and basketball fan so I try to go to and watch as many games as possible. I think it’s a good hobby to have and it definitely has a positive affect on my music it distracts and gives me a break to just be a normal guy.
How would you describe your music genre?
House music in all its variations I pride myself on always having baselines which stick out and are complex I love acid house a lot so I try to incorporate it into my music and anything from the early 90’s blending the old with the new.
Do you know any music theory?
Yes as a kid I did many years of guitar and piano lessons which has helped tons production wise. I also have a degree in audio engineering I interned at big studios in NYC so I’m a solid mixer and engineer.
What are your plans for the future?
For the future I really want to start my own label and party series I’ve had this idea I’ve been playing around with for a few years “Chiefs Only” it’s a party I started in Puerto Rico and really want to export it and start building it up also including streetwear type merch merging the music with fashion.
How did you get into music?
I come from a very musical family my uncle was a drummer for Carlos Santana and Ricky Martin and was a big influence on me wanting to make music. My mother had me in music lessons since I was a kid so since a young age I was interested in producing and making music.
What are you listening to at the moment?
I’m a big hip hop head and recently one of my favorite rappers and to me one of the most underrated in the game Vince Staples released his album Big Fish Theory. I’m really into it he included a lot UK Garage House and G-Funk in it mixed with grimy 808’s it’s all my favorite things in one. He’s also got Kendrick Lamar and Bon Iver on it, two of my favorite artist.
Who are your top 5 influences and icons?
In no particular order Michael Jackson, Kanye West, Ismael Rivera, Loco Dice, and Bob Marley.
When are you playing next?
Next I’ll be playing at FloorFiller festival in Belgium and then heading to Cocorico in Italy and Mykonos in Greece with Loco Dice to finish out the month. In August I’ll start my season in ibiza playing at both Hyte Ibiza at Amnesia and Do Not Sleep’s party at Sankeys. But of course I’m super excited for BPM Portugal in September I’ve played in that area before and can’t wait to be back.
