Sydney-based queer-pop artist BOLEYN has just unveiled his second offering in deftly arranged new single ‘re: 21’ – produced and mixed by Clockwork Odyssey at their studios located in Kings Cross and mastered by Peter Holz (Vance Joy, Gang of Youths, Peking Duk).
Drawing inspiration from the likes of staple influences Bright Eyes, Raymond Carver and Malay, ‘re: 21’ opens with warmly strummed guitar and the endearing vocals of BOLEYN, before gradually building with additional guitars, stunning harmonies and a meticulously composed rhythmic section.
“Each verse deals with a specific anxiety; alcohol, old friends, mental health, drugs and hook-up culture,” says Boleyn. “I remember sitting at home in my early twenties one night, with my guitar in hand, and thinking ‘Taylor Swift lied!’ she has her song 22’, right? Well I was in my twenties and wasn’t having any fun. I was going out with friends and having anxiety attacks in the club, waking up next to strangers and feeling empty and in general, feeling like I wasn’t living my life properly. So, instead of writing a party anthem about being young and not giving a fuck, I wrote what felt like the truth of my years as a young adult”.
BOLEYN’s debut single ‘The Revisionist’ was met with critical acclaim from the likes of local tastemakers Pilerats, Purple Sneakers, Project U, Wickedd Childd, FBi Radio and Radio Adelaide. Off the back of the track’s success, the enigmatic artist was invited to perform on the main stage at the fourth instalment of Victorian-based festival Gay Times, alongside Flint Eastwood, Kira Puru, Eliott and Maribelle.
The 23-year old law graduate and first-generation immigrant first brought the current iteration of the project to life after the original collective disbanded. Following on from time spent writing and soul-searching through Los Angeles, Miami and New York City, BOLEYN created the first seven tracks, which will all be released into the world in late-2019.
