What is your name and role within the band?
Jesse Crowe, Live:Vocalist.
Recording: Vocalist, Guitarist, Bassist, Synth.
How did you start?
Josh Korody and I met at a party and quickly got to talking about a joint love of Shoegaze, post punk and the early 90’s.
Where are you based?
Toronto, Ontario, Canada.
Please give an example of your music writing process?
For the first record, Josh and I would bring each other songs one by one and write all of the parts. Because Josh is a recording engineer, we were able to piece together a record by calling in friends and doing most of it ourselves. Pat McCormack jumped between drums and bass during the writing at that time too. The second record we had a more structured band and though we still wrote the skeletons of everything just the two of us, we had a lot more of a live sound through the members being a little more permanent. On this coming record, Habitat, we stripped back down to just Josh and I and did something that we thought we would never get the chance to do, which was to just lock ourselves in a studio and write while recording.
What are you working on right now?
We just finished Habitat, our third record and have been playing it live the last six months.
What is your gear setup?
We went from three guitars, bass and drums to synth, bass, guitar, drums and an spdsx.
What do you like to do outside of music and does it affect your music?
i’m a hair stylist and it really affords me the time to be creative. I’ve always considered it a creative outlet in itself, and the hours are flexible enough to tour.
How would you describe your music genre?
We sit somewhere in the house of shoegaze, post punk and electronic these days.
Do you know any music theory?
Josh is a trained producer and engineer. I haven’t taken theory since high school.
What are your plans for the future?
It’s a strange time to think about the future. Everything is so expensive in Toronto and it feels like everyone is being pushed out. For the band, we’re hoping to tour again once the record comes out in September, likely Europe and the UK. We’re open to going farther too if anyone is interested in having us!
How did you get into music?
Didn’t have to try really, it was always on via my dad’s mix tapes and my mom dancing around the house to The Gypsy Kings. Toss in a cool stepdad with a recording studio as a kid and really, you can’t avoid it.
What are you listening to at the moment?
Who are your top 5 influences and icons?
Beth Gibbons, Nick Cave, Bobby Gillespe, Hope Sandaval, Chad Munson.
When are you playing next?
We are playing this cool small festival in Kingston, Ontario called Wolfe Island.
