How did you start?
We were all already members of different bands in the Montreal music scene and had a number of mutual friends. Emily and Vic were both the singers in a punk band called Riot Porn at different times. We knew we wanted to be part of an all-girl project so we got together and soon found that songwriting was fun and natural together.
Where are you based?
Montreal, Canada.
Please give an example of your music writing process?
Sometimes one of us will come to the table with a riff or a vocal melody to begin with and we all embellish together, or sometimes through jamming we all create something together from start to finish. We respect the amount of time creating a song takes and have organized specific song-writing getaways or “Think-Tanks” in the past.
What are you working on right now?
Booking our month long July 2017 tour and are roughly half way through completing our second album to be released in September!
What is your gear setup?
Mandolin, ukulele, guitar and kick drum! We play acoustic whenever we can!
What do you like to do outside of music and does it affect your music?
We enjoy learning about science, being outdoors, having sex with people we lik, taking care of animals, drinking beer, and trying to stay creative all the time! Music is our priority but all of our pass-times inspire us.
How would you describe your music genre?
We were titled “DarkGrass” by a close friend and we are happy to adopt that as a genre name. Sometimes gloomy, sometimes hilarious, sometimes haunting, always heartfelt!
Do you know any music theory?
Emily studied classical violin when she was a kid but hated it – together we know enough to get around. With the way that we learn from each other and others in the scene, knowing theory is definitely not a necessity!
What are your plans for the future?
#rockingoutforever
We have our second album in the works and have two tours to look forward to! July 2017 and September 2017.
How did you get into music?
Alex grew up basically playing folk music in a family band and was taught mandolin by her grandpa and learned guitar at 14.
Vic started a girl band at 13 after her uncle left his acoustic yamaha to her <3
Emily played violin as a child and also picked up a guitar at 12 or 13 and has been playing in bands ever since.
What are you listening to at the moment?
Our band’s mascot Tank (a chihuahua) is whining at us to let him out to poop. It’s gonna be a hit.
We listen to a lot of our friend’s music as they are our constant inspiration 🙂 Idiot Brother (whose song we will be covering on our upcoming album) is in our cd players often and also our talented lady friends in the band Mama’s Broke.
Who are your top 5 influences and icons?
Captain Janeway
Amy Goodman
Dolly Parton
Patsy Cline
Lisa Simpson.
When are you playing next?
Tuesday, May 30th for the Mama’s Broke album launch at Divan Orange in Montreal.
Please feel free to include any extra info.
