Where are you currently based and what is the music scene like there?
Hey guys, thanks for chatting to me! I am based in Portsmouth in the UK, which is by the coast, south of London for those that don’t know! The music scene there over all is good, but it’s still very early days for electronic music. There are a couple of festivals a year and some good venues in the city, but these are geared more towards bands and live music.
How did you first start playing music?
I went to Slinky in Bournemouth (The Opera House) and I loved it. It was quite an impulsive move, as I went out and got a loan and bought some decks after that, along with the whole speaker set up. Off I went and started to teach myself.
Dream venue to play and why?
Hmmm I would have to say Privilege in Ibiza, as I remember the first time I walked in there and was just stunned by the sheer size of the place. It was amazing and quite overwhelming if you have never seen a super club like that before. The DJ booth was actually over a pool when I went the first time – but I know that’s changed now.
Your 3rd EP ‘Kiss’ is coming out on Alan Fitzpatricks label We Are The Brave on the 18th of October, what influenced the sound and song writing for this EP?
Well, I think that I have somewhat my own sound, I’m trying to achieve a dirty subby bassy vibe and the rest just sort of happened whilst making the tracks. So to be honest, nothing specific really influenced me when making this EP, and I didn’t have anything in mind, sometimes that’s the best way to make a track I think. Of course, with the help of a close friend and a talented engineer (Reset Robot) – the EP was done!
How did you go about writing the music for the EP?
I always start out with a few tracks which I really like and have something about them which caught my ear. I pick things from them, and also write notes when I am out and about as that’s often when more ideas come into my head, and then I get back into the studio and work with them.
Where and when did you record/produce?
With this next EP ‘Kiss’ I did this a few months back in Reset Robots studio. He is a friend and also a local Portsmouth lad too, with an insane studio. Thanks Dave!
What programs/equipment did you use to record/produce?
For this EP, I used Reason and Sub 37.
You’re juggling family life/normal job whilst working on breaking the scene, how do you manage all of these responsibilities and what do you find most rewarding and challenging?
Try and get a good balance of both is the key, but also, I am trying to make music my full-time career and I guess at the stage that I am, everyone has to have a normal job to be able to make ends meet. It’s not easy, and the industry is very hard to break, so a lot do not have a choice, but to make juggling family, travel and studio time work. We all have to start somewhere, but playing shows leaves me that incredible feeling and pays off all that hard work and dedication.
What drives you to do what you do?
Passion for music is always number 1 for me, followed by the people. Whether that’s industry people, who I have been fortunate to meet some amazing friend’s over the years, but also the crowd – all those people who buy your music and pay to come and see you play. Seeing all sorts of people united having a god time is magical.
What advice would you give to artists who are trying to get shows and make a career in the music industry?
Don’t rush and have A LOT of patience. I’ve actually been doing music for over 16 years now…..
Who are you listening to at the moment?
What do you like to do away from music?
I like to stay fit or try to at least! I love tennis and golf. Also I have kids, so watching them play football and spending time with my family and friends is priceless. I have a few mates who all love to go fishing too, so I have started to go and really enjoy it, it’s quite an escape and calming!
What’s planned for the remainder of 2019 going into 2020?
Got few We Are The Brave showcases coming up and I have a collab coming out in December with 3 other tracks. But more to come on that towards the end of the year!
Favourite food and place to hangout in your hometown?
Ohhhh I’d have to say Shorties restaurant, really nice steak house.
