Antisocialites out Friday September 8 on Pod via Inertia

…Alvvays never second-guess their core strength: anthemic, arm-swaying
hooks that aim for the stars even when the sky is gray.

Lead single “In Undertow” contains all of the elements that were
initially so charming about the Toronto five-piece blown up to
fuzzy and dreamy new heights.

The band has kept their rivers of reverb, which sometimes makes them
sound as though they’re playing to an empty middle-school gymnasium,
an image that fittingly blends sweetness with melancholy.

Alvvays are back with a brand-new record, Antisocialites, due Friday September 8, and today they’ve released the video for the first single “In Undertow”.

Analog visual feedback and moon-man cameos fill the video singer Molly Rankin describes as “aquacosmic psych meets public access TV.” Rankin says, “I’m aware of my own drowning fixation and fascinated by that bizarre lunar-tidal relationship. We’ve already filled our water video quota. Space is a trippier ocean.

Director Joe Garrity had this to say about the video: “In designing the visuals for ‘In Undertow’ we combined practical effects with cutting-edge projection techniques, including a 360 ‘Holodec’ that stitched multiple projections into a unified frame. Throughout the video we utilised analogue feedback imagery–the mirroring effect created when a camera points back at its own monitor–in everything from the rear-projections to the final ghosting effect created with a VHS camcorder. Exploring the motif of infinite loops, our aim was to hybridize the analogue with the digital in an homage to the bygone era of video.

“In Undertow” is the first new music from the band since the release of their much loved self-titled debut album in 2014. The song is an exciting glimpse into what fans can expect from their sophomore album.
