What is your name and role within Alright The Captain?
Hi my names Marty and I play guitar in ATC along with Todd on Bass and Jamie beating the shit out of the drums.
What’s been happening the last couple of years?
Well we decided to take a break for a while back in August 2016 as we’d been flat out for a long time and seemed to just constantly be on tour so we needed to rest up healthwise and work on some other projects for a while. Jamie and I also play in another band called a-tota-so which we focused on for the past year along with Chris from Cheap Jazz, we recently recorded an album at Nice weather for air strikes studios which will be out at some point in 2018 and we toured Europe with Chiyoda Ku back in October and took Todd along with us which brought us back to starting ATC from scratch again and getting back into our lockup to start writing all new music so that’s pretty much where we’re at at the moment.
Will your sound/vibe be staying the same?
There will probably be some changes to the sound but it’s still very early days, we aren’t in a rush to write but we are keen to write more music that will get people throwing themselves around so it may end up heavier and dancier than before but that’s the fun part at the moment, it’s just nice to be making noise together again.
What do you have planned for 2018?
No crazy plans for ATC at the moment really aside from writing a new set and then hopefully road testing it before 2018’s out. The a-tota-so album will be out round spring/summer all being well so between the two bands it’s going to be a pretty busy year.
What or who influences your sound and songwriting process?
We used to argue and compromise between each other a lot with regards writing as we all listen to so much different music so it’s kind of a melting pot of all our individual tastes taken into the studio and thrown around until everybody is happy. Songs can come from nowhere or take months to finish which is part of the fun when it comes to writing Alright the Captain music.
We don’t have a formula as such or pre conceived notions for writing, it just seems to work out between the three of us when we get in a room together.
Who are you listening at the moment?
I’ve been listening to loads of Brutus lately and lots of more underground bands that I deal with through my promotions company called BUTTONpUSHER in Nottingham, we put on gigs at a DIY space called JT Soar once a month and we get some seriously awesome bands in like Chiyoda Ku, MNHM, Alpha Male tea party, Vasa and The Guru Guru so I tend to listen to lots of bands like that.
How did Alright the Captain form?
We formed 10 years ago when I moved to Nottingham from Ireland with my old band and that fell apart after we got a house together, some of those guys went home and I stayed and continued to do music as a singer songwriter playing solo shows around Nottingham but that wasn’t for me so I started ATC with a guy called Ash who then introduced me to Todd and it just took off from there. We never had any luck with drummers and went through 4 before we finally met Jamie and really felt like a solid unit. We then spent our twenties touring the UK and Europe as much as we possibly could and here we are still loving it and still playing.
What equipment and programs do you use when recording and playing live?
We used to have a lot more gear which included synths and samples but at the moment for the fresh stuff we’ve stripped back to just guitar, bass and drums. Todd and I still use a lot of effects pedals so there’s a good range of stuff in there including whammy’s, Memory man, Octaves and pitch shifters. We aren’t really a geeky gear band! Promise!
When and where are you playing next?
Watch this space but it’s likely to be late 2018 before we’re back out again!
Favourite food and place to hangout?
Curry hands down is our favourite meal as a band I think. Todd makes a mean curry as does my girlfriend Zoe so they’ve recently started going head to head and make amazing feasts. Favourite restaurant at the moment is Kayal in Nottingham.
Favourite place to hang out is JT Soar in Nottingham and Bristol is my favourite party city!
