“Catchy as hell” – The Independent
“It’s time to jump on the bandwagon, these guys are going to be big” – The Irish Times
Irish indie rockers The Academic have announced details on their eagerly anticipated debut album ‘Tales From The Backseat’ out 12th January.
Recorded in LA with producer Tim Pagnotta (Dreamcar, Wilde Belle, Saint Motel), ‘Tales From The Backseat’ offers some of The Academic’s most accomplished songwriting yet. From the anthemic alt-rock mastery of ‘Bear Claws’ to the infectious, joyful exuberance of brand new single ‘Permanent Vacation’, the songs take aim at the turbulence of growing into your twenties – loss of innocence, wariness of adulthood, unease with and ultimate acceptance of the inevitability of growing up.
Largely penned while the band was still in their teens, they draw inspiration from a vast catalogue of influences including early Arctic Monkeys, American Football and sleek early Motown production, with latest cut and infectious album highlight ‘Permanent Vacation’ demonstrating the band’s undoubted indie pop sensibilities.
Having spent the better part of two years building a strong grassroots following with tours across the US and Europe, the quartet have become well-accustomed to the live environment. Support slots for acts including The Strokes, Pixies, Noel Gallagher and Catfish And The Bottlemen have expanded their fanbase considerably, and with a full European tour supporting The Kooks next month this is only set to grow further.
The band also recently created a viral video for previous release ‘Bear Claws’, in which they discovered a way to ‘hack’ the natural time delay in Facebook Live’s stream to create a visual audio loop pedal. With over 1.5 million views in less than a week and coverage from outlets including Reddit, Mashable and NME, the first-of-its-kind video has provided a significant boost to their profile.
Alongside critical praise from the likes of The New York Times, The Independent and The Irish Times, not to mention widespread BBC Radio 1 airplay from Annie Mac and Huw Stephens, the four-piece have been earmarked by Phil Taggart as one of Ireland’s biggest emerging acts, drawing welcome comparisons to fellow Irishmen Two Door Cinema Club amongst others.
Permanent Vacation, produced by Tim Pagnotta (Dreamcar, Wilde Belle, Saint Motel), will be available on all platforms 27th October.
The Academic is Craig Fitzgerald (vox/guitar), Dean Gavin (drums) and brothers Matt (lead guitar) and Stephen Murtagh (bass).
