Infamous Dance Music Redneck Ricky Retro Wishes His Exes “Happy New Year” on New Track Featuring Love Harder

written by the partae

If a recent breakup has you feeling a little blue this holiday season, look no further than Ricky Retro‘s new track “Happy New Year” to have you giving zero f*cks in no time. The infamously out-there producer teamed up with Will Simms under his brand Love Harder for the track’s soulful and irreverent vocals, which float over Retro‘s bouncy basslines, driving kickdrums and groovy melodies. Erring on the softer side of his music, “Happy New Year” is really a breakup track about wishing the other person well while doing your very best to forget all about them, and that’s something we can all get on board with. The new release follows Retro‘s “Freak On Me,” ft. Icona Pop, and a stream of independent singles that have had fans and tastemakers in the industry buzzing. “Happy New Year” is also Ricky‘s Ultra debut, welcoming him to a roster of some of the scene’s most talented artists.

“Since it takes the earth 365 days to revolve around the Sun it’s only fair we celebrate it with a song. I always wanted to make a birthday or holiday song and this was the perfect time to do it, and the perfect match up with Ricky Retro. Get ready to flush out 2019 to make room for the new 20’s.” – Love Harder

Ricky Retro is the ‘Merican, Budweiser drinking, NASCAR loving producer who is fusing together dance music with redneck shenanigans, a style that some previously thought impossible to join. Though southern rock and dance music are fundamentally different, Retro’s audacity and ability to basically not give a shit has found him a niche as “the American Fisher,” as he was referred to by several popular media outlets; his ridiculous stage presence and energetic sound have carved out an audience for him among open-minded young dance fans who are always down for a good time. Ricky Retro appeared recently on the scene with “DALE,” which boasts an undeniably catchy bassline amid some absurd voice overs, and “‘Murica,” essentially embodying everything all other countries love to hate about Americans. His in-your-face antics and comical Instagram feed make Ricky Retro stand out among any other up-and-coming producer, and we bet you won’t be forgetting his music anytime soon. See what 2020 has in store for this dance cowboy.

Love Harder is a DJ, Producer & Recording Artist. Signed to Ultra Music Love Harder’s first single “Oblivion” Features Amber Van Day. “Oblivion” was added to Party Anthems on BBC Radio 1 on the day of its release and has already gained over 8 Million streams on Spotify alone, adding to a number of huge playlists across the streaming world. Love Harder recently performed on Europa TV as part of the launch for “Oblivion“. Love Harder also just co-wrote and co produced and Feature on “Beat Of My Heart” by Lost Frequencies. The Love Harder project is the brainchild and dance project of established multi award winning songwriter record producer Will Simms.

Audio Obscura brings Peggy Gou to Amsterdam in the stunning setting of audio-visual installation SKALAR On February 1st the iconic Gashouder will host this unparalleled event

written by the partae

Audio Obscura makes another bold statement in Amsterdam with the announcement of a very special party on February 1st at the Westergas. In the heart of the incredible kinetic SKALAR art installation, by Christopher Bauder and Kangding Ray, none other than Peggy Gou will headline the evening. Known for her dreamy flow in tracks such as this years hit ‘Starry Night’, the South-Korean super star will showcase her endless energy.

Never one to miss an opportunity, Audio Obscura will take over the venue and work together with the rest of the team behind SKALAR to create a unique night. The music of Peggy Gou, Kangding Ray and supporting acts will interact in symbiotic fashion with the visuals arranged by Christopher Bauder that make up the installation. The artists will perform from the middle of the incredible circular venue. The masterminds behind SKALAR, musician Kangding Ray and light artist Christopher Bauder, will close off with a special custom techno live AV set for the occasion.

SKALAR is a huge audio-visual art experience from Berlin that lands in Amsterdam’s Gashouder from January 10 to February 5. The installation is powered by Audio Obscura, WHITEvoid and Westergas. It explores the effects of light and sound on human perception, with the creators narrating the journey as light vectors, kinetic mirrors and multi-channel surround sounds interact and evolve in reaction to each other. It seeks to provide a meditation on the fundamental nature and essence of basic human emotions, where light is treated as a solid material for the artists to manipulate as a sculptor would clay or marble.

Don’t miss this unique and historic party, where music and visual arts will merge like never before. Tickets are on sale Thursday, Dec 19 at 12PM CET.

When it came time to making their new album, The Death Of Me, the Sydney outfit knew they had a tall order on their hands.“We wanted to walk a line between maintaining what’s defined our band and brought people to our music in the first place, while trying to write for ourselves and keep ourselves interested,” begins drummer Daniel Furnari, one of the main songwriters in the unit. “Being our second full-length, we knew it was important for us to surprise the listener as well – nobody wants to hear the same record twice. We wanted to give them things they wouldn’t expect, take them to new places, but also for it to be definitively a Polaris record, building on what we’ve been working towards.”

Polaris returned to the house in the small South Coast town of Mollymook where they made The Mortal Coil, converting it into a temporary studio. The familiar surrounds acted as something of a refuge after the high-pressure claustrophobia of touring.

Accompanying the band was their front of house sound engineer, Lance Prenc, and long-time friend Scott Simpson (of Melbourne band Alpha Wolf), both of whom co-produced the album with the band.

They tried a few new approaches to song writing, with tracks such as the anthemic first single, Masochist starting life as a vocal melody, around which the riffs were built, as opposed to the other way around.

In the two years since The Mortal Coil, Polaris embarked on three sold-out headlining tours of Australia, as well as supporting Architects and Parkway Drive around the country; five runs throughout Europe (including a series of arena shows supporting Architects and a slew of high-profile summer festival spots); three separate US tours; not to mention performing at the Download Festival and Unify Gathering in Australia. Somewhere in there, the quintet found time to write The Death Of Me.

Techno Luminary Paula Temple Returns To Australia

written by the partae

Tour Dates

Friday 7th February: The Bottom End, Melbourne
Saturday 8th February: Oxford Arts Factory, Sydney

For over 15 years Paula Temple has been pursuing her own unique musical path. As a self-confessed ‘noisician’ she specialises in a noisy, phantasmagoric techno sound, where the dial is rarely turned below 200% and every moment of silence seems deafening. In 2016-2017 she co-produced with Karin Dreijer on the new Fever Ray album ‘Plunge’ which won the Swedish Grammy for Producer of The Year in 2018.

Earlier this year, Temple’s Essential Mix cemented her reputation as one of the world’s foremost purveyors of hard, unrelenting techno, and bookings at tastemaker events including Unsound Krakow and Mutek Mexico further increased her profile as a scene leader. Her recently released debut album ‘Edge Of Everything’ was dubbed by Resident Advisor as “an evocative techno album which is an impeccable showcase of Temple’s artistic voice”. The Australian return of Paula Temple is long overdue…

Paula Temple has remixed avant-electronic acts such as The Knife, Peaches, Perera Elsewhere and Planningtorock. In 2015 she started a unique collaboration series called Decon/Recon on her label Noise Manifesto, working with several artists including rRoxymore, Aisha Devi, SØS Gunver Ryberg and Oni Ayhun. In 2016-2017 she co-produced with Karin Dreijer on the new Fever Ray album ‘Plunge’ alongside several other unique artists, which won the Swedish Grammy for Producer of The Year in 2018.

In previous years, Paula co-developed an innovative live performance midi controller called the MXF8 in 2001, one of the first of its kind for music technology and ultimately shaped her current style of Hybrid LIVE/DJ performances. Blurring the lines between producer, remixer and DJ, Paula layers between her own live pieces, edits and tracks, building powerful, driving sets in a style so thrilling and unique. Again impressed with her skills, Resident Advisor wrote a feature on Paula’s unique approach in their ‘Art of DJing’ series.

Her worldwide touring schedule has included stellar performances at Movement Detroit, Pitch Music & Arts Festival Australia, Unsound Krakow, Mutek Mexico, Katharsis Amsterdam, as well as being a regular contributor to the Berlin techno scene at Tresor, Gegen. 2018 included curating a Day at Nuits Sonores, Timewarp, Neopop, Montreux Jazz, Dimensions, and returning to Awakenings festival and ADE. 2019 has been her biggest year yet, becoming one of Europe’s most in demand techno artists. 2020 anticipate a world tour.

MAGIC DIRT Announce Reissue of Life Was Better (1994) Will be available on vinyl & DSPs for the first time! Supporting Cold Chisel nationally in 2020

written by the partae
Life Was Better Reviews
‘Geelong‘s favourite sons (and daughter) do it again, with five tracks of pure alterno magic… this is a guaranteed indie hit and one of the archetypal Australian releases of the year.’ OTS – Nov 1994
‘…marvellous, scuzzed out, surreal ramalama…’ Murray Engleheart – Drum Media 1994
‘It’s clear that Magic Dirt take their lessons from a combination of the punk of new indie mixed with the roots of older alternative rock…What rises up is hard, heavy, contagious rock ‘n’ roll – a new breed.’ Tracey Grimson, OTS – Jan 1995
“It ‘sounds’ like something sweet, like The Bangles…as covered by an air conditioner and a cement mixer…Amoxycillin… a four-minute song…followed by 10 minutes of feedback. Play that on the radio, creeps!” – Nazz, Rip It Up – Dec 1995
“…the kind of feedback-laced gutter pop to knock the loneliness out of your head…” D.D. Forte – Dec 1994
Remote Control Records in partnership with Emergency Music are proud to announce the reissue of Life Was Better by Magic Dirt will be released on Friday 17 January. Life Was Better was originally released in November 1994 on CD and has long been out of print. This will be the very first time Life Was Better will be available on vinyl and to stream on DSPs. Catch Magic Dirt support Cold Chisel nationally across Australia in January/February 2020. Full tour details below.

This reissue follows the reissue of their debut EP Signs Of Satanic Youth which Pitchfork gave a 7.2 earlier this year.

After the release of Signs Of Satanic Youth in 1993 and a heady succession of touring with the likes of Sonic Youth, Smashing Pumpkins, Beck and Jon Spencer Blues Explosion, Magic Dirt weathered the hysteria of the next big thing tag by breaking up and getting back together four times. After regrouping for good and hiring help in the way of management and an agent, Magic Dirt swiftly reconvened in the middle of 1994 to record their big breakthrough EP, Life Was Better.
Debuting at No. 1 on the Australian alternative music chart and staying on that chart for a whopping 75 weeks, Life Was Better sold 20,000 copies, received four ARIA nominations in 1995, topped nearly every radio, alternative press and record store chart in the land, garnered the band a national spot on the Big Day Out, supports with Hole, Silverchair and Dinosaur Jr in 1995, and landed them a major record deal with Warner Music US.

The album cover and the overall aesthetic of Life Was Better was heavily influenced by Aussie cult movie, ‘Puberty Blues’, which the band were obsessed with so much so that after the EP release they headlined the now infamous Wanda Beach gig in Cronulla (a NSW coastal location featured in ‘Puberty Blues’). Dean said at the time, “…We didn’t book any security, there was no stage and we only had a vocal PA…It was meant to be for maybe 80 to 200 kids. We only did it because we wanted to make a poster that said, ‘Return To Puberty Blues with Magic Dirt’.”  (SMH, Sep 2005)

Aaron Curnow, from Spunk Records, who promoted the show says, “…I have so many crazy memories from that night. The fact that we sold 200 tickets to the show and 1500 people showing up did make it quite memorable. I remember people were so desperate to get in that they were climbing in the windows…one guy skated off a table in the kitchen and split his head open in front of me… also David Fricke (senior editor of Rolling Stone, US) was there. A few years later he voted the show in his top 10 shows of all time in a Rolling Stone article. I think it came in at #4. Patti Smith at Max’s Kansas City might’ve been #1 so to make it in there was incredible!”

Following a milestone year in which his 2018 independently-released debut album ‘Women, Weed & Wordplay’ racked up a staggering 60 million streams and counting, stayed in the ARIA Album chart for 52 weeks straight, launched two Gold-certified singles and became the 13th highest selling Australian album of 2019, lauded underground Sydney rapper Chillinit today announces his much anticipated sophomore album The Octagon (due January 31) with a first taste coming via single & video “Ready For The Pain,” which is currently the #1 trending video on YouTube in Australia.

Building his fan base organically over the past three years, Chillinit’s underground DIY expertise has helped him accumulate over 210k Instagram followers, creating an emerging empire from his highly entertaining (and controversial) antics, brushes with the law and the media, raw YouTube clips, turbulent live performances, and unique ability to find common ground between powerful, world class rap verses and tongue-in-cheek hit songs full of humour, charm and mischief.
In addition to the grassroots success of ‘Women, Weed & Wordplay’, 2019 also brought several other highlights, including 2x gold-certified singles, 3x #1 trending Youtube Videos, being the first Australian to appear on Charlie Sloth’s legendary UK segment Fire In The Booth (formerly BBC now Apple Beats 1), selling over 8000 tickets to his first national outing, The Ashes Australian Tour, and a high rotation on Triple J for his standalone single “Freedom“.
There’s 8 sides to this story.
Chillinit’s second album ‘The Octagon’ will arrive January 31st. (Pre-orders available here)

Timberwolf’s new single ‘The Winnie Blues’ out now

Timberwolf’s new single ‘The Winnie Blues’ out now

written by the partae
ON TOUR IN DECEMBER / JANUARY / FEBRUARY

Following his recent appearance with the Hilltop Hoods at Triple J’s One Night Stand, Adelaide’s critically-acclaimed talent Timberwolf (aka Christopher Panousakis) returns today to cement his place as one of South Australia’s most masterful writer/producers with an irresistibly witty commentary on what many Australians would recognise as their first, or first-of-many escapades to Bali, far away whatever’s been getting the better of you.

‘The Winnie Blues’ is described by Chris as “initially a track I wrote for a laugh, but it grew on me slowly. For ages it was just slang for ‘the winter blues’ between a good friend and myself, both living skint by the beach until I realised how true the song had become for how I was living at the time, and that it was probably similar for anyone else living in their first share-house. It’s hard running in to all those mundane week-to-week speed bumps that get us down, grappling with the voice inside your head making you feel like you should be more grown up than you are. It’s pretty tongue in cheek though… As a catastrophic over-thinker I guess I always found it fascinating and a little bit funny that for some people, the solution is as simple as spotting a discount air-fare, packing the suitcase and leaving it all behind to smoke a few ciggies in the tropics. That’s the dream.

There is a bit of a sad theme that makes up the undercurrent of the song, because I remember at the time I was feeling pretty blue about having vocal surgery and not playing gigs, earning money… But what I liked about the song was it always seemed to cheer me up.

That’s where the idea for the film clip came from. I worked closely with Nick McKinlay (Julia Jacklin, Stella Donnelly) & the lead actor David Western to try and piece together a story of Dave’s sad holiday, where the poor guy is determined to have a good time but just isn’t gelling with the people or the environment around him. It eventually gets the better of him despite some bold resilience, until his luck turns around and we meet at the end for a good old fashioned hang with dogs, sports and a dip in the water; simple things.

In my opinion there’s a timeless element to good story-tellers like Paul Kelly/Courtney Barnett, and I’ve come to realise after doing so much touring overseas this year that I’m happiest when I’m playing lots of guitar, spending ritualistic time by the ocean and shooting the breeze. So it was important for me to produce this track myself and try wrap those elements up in what turned out to be a pretty surfy, bustling tune that I hope is as much fun for people to sing along to as it is for me to play it.”

Earlier this year you may have caught Timberwolf at his second appearance to a packed crowd at WOMADelaide Festival, or joining The Paper Kites as main support on their national tour. To adoring fans Chris is a vocalist that leaves an impact, and The Winnie Blues picks up where his last stunning single Proud Silence left off, which has been streamed on Spotify alone over 2 million times and counting.

Since emerging in 2015 with debut EP Flux, Timberwolf has pushed boundaries with his unique and crafty compositions, securing himself a well-deserved national fan-base and a publishing deal in 2016 with US Music Publisher Third Side Music (Courtney Barnett, Flying Lotus, BadBadNotGood, Kurt Vile) after a stand-out performance at Brisbane’s BIGSOUND.

His debut album Íkaros earned performances at Canadian Music Week, an appearance on Triple J’s Like A Version, and was rated 4/5 stars by Rolling Stone Magazine. The album featured Triple J and community radio favourites “Hold You Up” and “Washed Out” on high rotation, collectively clocking over 2.2 million streams on Spotify, and landed Timberwolf support duties for Amy Shark’s sold out national tour before, heading out again to support Lime Cordiale & The Teskey Brothers nationally.

Having previously received Best Songwriter, Best Male Artist and Experimental Music awards at South Australian Music Awards, there’s no doubt Timberwolf is one of Australia’s brightest and most engaging young artists. His latest offering ‘The Winnie Blues’ is the perfect soundtrack for any summer road trips ahead, and with album #2 on the horizon, Timberwolf is bound for a huge 2020.

ON TOUR IN DECEMBER / JANUARY / FEBRUARY   Following his recent appearance with the Hilltop Hoods at Triple J’s One Night Stand, Adelaide’s critically-acclaimed talent Timberwolf (aka Christopher Panousakis) returns today to cement his place as one of South Australia’s most masterful writer/producers with an irresistibly witty commentary on what many Australians would recognise as their first, or first-of-many escapades to Bali, far away whatever’s been getting the better of you. BARCELONA LABEL EL PALMAS MUSIC, ANNOUNCE RETROSPECTIVE RE-ISSUE COMPILATION OF WORKS FROM VENEZUELAN ELECTRONIC ARTIST ANGEL RADA FIRST SINGLE ‘HIPERSPACIO’ COMES WITH EXPERTLY CRAFTED VIDEO PREMIERED BY BOILER ROOM 4:3

written by the partae

As a pioneer of experimental electronic music in Venezuela, Angel Rada has always been a restless mind with his feet planted firmly on the ground. With a rich sound universe that blends varying techniques from field recordings to raw analog soundscapes, Angel pushes forward elements of sound design in his productions, whilst projecting a cultural avant-garde attitude and sentiments relative to true artistry; treating music very much as an art form. A sizeable discography sees Angel’s output standing as one of the most extensive in his country. Independent Barcelona record label, El Palmas pay tribute to this visionary Venezuelan producer announcing today a double LP re-issue compilation entitled ‘Rada: Tropical Cosmic Sounds from Space’ with first album single ‘Hiperspacio’ and accompanying music video.

“At some point, electronic music began to become increasingly commercial and compliant
to markets, so we took the opposite direction. Not everybody’s ears are prepared to hear
real sounds, sometimes this complex intellectuality makes them upset. We are still active and
our original structure still works, defending music at its high level as an expression of Art.”

Angel Rada

A collection of twenty-two carefully selected tracks from Angel Rada’s first period of productions, ‘Tropical Cosmic Sounds From Space’ focuses primarily on the period between 1980 to 1989, bringing together tracks from five different albums previously released via Rada’s own label project, Uranium Records; ‘Upadesa’, ‘Viveka’, ‘Continuvm’ ‘Armagedon & The Third Wave Revolution’ and ‘Impressiones Etnosonicas’ LP’s. Considered to be some of his best works and coveted by experimental and electronic collectors around the globe, the music of Rada has been tagged by German music colleagues such as experimental and krautrock pioneer, Klaus Schulze, as “Latin Cosmic Psikraut”; a futuristic vision of the Caribbean Sea which felt completely ahead of its time, full of innovative textures and amorphous envelopes.Through his many influences, Rada has evolved through the use of dynamic and melodic structures, constituting an antidote to the repetitive minimal music he sees across the electronic landscape of today, whilst also looking to further develop electronic music in its original form; inspired by the early groundwork of pioneers, Stockhausen, Schulze and Robert Schroeder. First single ‘Hiperspacio’ is taken from his 1984 double LP ‘Viveka’ and is informed by Rada’s own spiritual inquiry.

Following a serious emergency operation, Rada contemplated the meaning of artistic expression through music, also inspiring other tracks from ‘Viveka’ LP such as ‘Kundalini’ (named after a form of spiritual female energy released by meditation). ‘Hiperspacio’, translated to English means ‘Hyperspace’ and references the notion of time-travel or higher states accessed by certain methods of spiritual practice. Rada seeks to communicate this vision, incorporating raw recordings of swirling wind with a subtly driving low-end and reverbed psychedelic synth melodies, creating a sense of space as though one is transcending the universe.

Accompanying, ‘Hiperspacio’ is a music video crafted and directed by Spanish audio-visual studio, Dedo Ciego. Premiered by Boiler Room 4:3, the video offers a visual representation of the contexts and inspirations that lie behind Rada’s 1984 creation, Hiperspacio.

Angel Rada ‘Rada: Tropical Cosmic Sounds From Space’ will be released 11 Feb 2020

RICKY CRISP SHARES NEW SINGLE ‘WOAH, SIR’ + MELBOURNE SHOW ANNOUNCED

RICKY CRISP SHARES NEW SINGLE ‘WOAH, SIR’ + MELBOURNE SHOW ANNOUNCED

written by the partae
After a standout debut headline show, Melbourne producer/songwriter Ricky Crisp returns with his second single, ‘WOAH, SIR’. Stream Apple/Spotify.

Following on from the bedroom trap of his breakout single ‘SATIN SAINT’, ‘WOAH, SIR’ is another example of Ricky Crisp’s textured and assured production style. Trading the introspective and hypnotic nature of his debut for a more immediate, energetic pace, ‘WOAH, SIR’ delivers punchy chorus hooks, melancholic synths and exuberant melodies which bounce and flow over the grimy bass and beats.

While this looser temperament doesn’t detract from his trademark alternative trap sound, ‘WOAH, SIR’ is meticulous in its balance, exploring heavier lyrical themes despite its playful tone. Of the track, Ricky Crisp says, “The contrast between the lyrics and the general tone of the track wasn’t necessarily a conscious decision but rather something I pursue quite naturally with my music. While the song touches on the personal, its more observant of the people around me. I’m at an age now where the decisions we make have a greater impact on us going into the next chapter of our lives, and this was something I wanted to explore.“

Ricky Crisp is the project of Jack Den Ouden, who crafts intricate electronic and trap beats from his bedroom studio. Inspired by the many intersections of hip-hop and electronic music as witnessed through peers including Ryan Hemsworth and Juice WRLD, Ricky Crisp continues to showcase his evolving sound and diverse repertoire. As he approaches putting the finishing touches on a debut EP, Ricky Crisp is ready to establish himself amongst Australia’s class of rising electronic artists.

Following the release, Ricky Crisp will launch ‘WOAH, SIR’ at the Grace Darling Hotel on Saturday 11 January. Full details below.

MDNGHT RECORDINGS ANNOUNCE INAUGURAL RELEASE WITH RUSSIAN DUO GOOM GUM WITH EARLY SUPPORT FROM BBC RADIO 1’S PETE TONG, ‘SONAS’ EXECUTES MDNGHT RECORDINGS VISION

written by the partae
Forged in the dark of nightclubs and the effervescence of the festival circuit, MDNGHT Recordings launches this December, with the clear objective of spreading the love and passion for the scene that has brought them together. Sharing a unified vision, MDNGHT Recordings are looking to bring like-minded people together, in a space that breeds creativity and provides a platform for up and coming artists to grow. Scouring the corners of the globe for unknown and rising talent is at the forefront of their A&R process, placing a spotlight on artists who deserve to be shared with the world.

“After months of preparation, we’re happy to announce the release of our new label, MDNGHT Recordings. It’s the culmination of our friendship coupled with years of experience in the industry, leading us to launch something we can call our own. Our aim is to source unknown artists, with special talents and place them on a worldwide platform. It’s now time we share our passion and love for the music with everyone waiting for quality music.” – MDNGHT Recordings

Welcoming Russian production duo, Goom Gum on board for the inaugural release, ‘Sonas’, the pair have made an impact with their melodic and progressive inspired productions since forming in 2016. Appearing on the likes of Moscoman’s Disco Halal and Enamour’s ZeroThree Records, they have already garnered support from the likes of Andhim, Solomun and Guy Mantzur.

“Goom Gum have been making waves for some time now and we instantly fell in love with the duo’s style the first time we heard it. To be able to claim ‘Sonas’ as the first release ever on the label is something we’re immensely proud of.” – MDNGHT Recordings
Delivering their blend of melodic techno and progressive house, they have received continuous support from BBC Radio 1’s Pete Tong. Their recent track ‘It’s A Lot’, which features a vocal sample from Depeche Mode’s classic track, ‘Master & Servant’ was awarded an ‘Essential New Tune’ and saw them recently appear on air for a ‘Weekend Hot Mix’; further cementing their rapid rise through the ranks of the electronic music industry, in keeping with the labels vision of presenting up and coming, unknown artists to the worldwide stage. As the attention now turns to their debut on MDNGHT Recordings, the duo delivers an inspired single in the form of ‘Sonas’. Building throughout the track, Goom Gum provoke emotion with stabbing synths and sweeping melodies. Already picking up plays on Pete Tong’s Friday Night Radio 1 Dance Show, ‘Sonas’ aims firmly at the dancefloor with its peak time progressive notes.

Goom Gum’s ‘Sonas’ is now available on all platforms via MDNGHT Recordings.

NASTIA LAUNCHES NEW LABEL, NECHTO BRINGING UNCOMPROMISING TECHNO TO THE FORE UNVEILING A 4-TRACK EP FROM AN UNKNOWN ARTIST, SPOTLIGHTING UKRAINE’S LARGELY UNEXPLORED TECHNO SCENE

written by the partae

The rave scene and electronic music landscape of Ukraine is one that remains largely unexplored, their booming techno sound little known. Yet still, there is no one better to spearhead the deliverance of Ukrainian talent than one of their own, internationally acclaimed DJ, promoter and recently crowned BBC Radio 1 Resident, Nastia.

Having carved her own path into a now seismic music career with no formal training, to guiding the next generation of DJs and producers via Smirnoff’s Equalising Music mentoring program, Nastia has become renowned the world-over for her straight-talking marque of techno. Built around her distinctive ability to curate the music of others in such a natural way that is assured to work on each and every dancefloor she graces, Nastia furthers those sentiments with the launch of her new label, NECHTO.

Seeing the conclusion of her previous project, ‘Propaganda’ through which she curated a minimal, house sound rather separated from her selections in the club. Nastia begins a new journey with NECHTO that is closer to the dancefloor and her talents first and foremost as a DJ.

Now taking a distinctly bold line and electronic confidence, NECHTO will present functional dancefloor music with a DJs-Only attitude, techno that works, whilst further exploring unknown talent within her home country of Ukraine. Unleashing a new beast, NECHTO, translated from Ukrainian to English means ‘Something’. A term often used in Ukraine to describe intense and marked techno experiences ‘NECHTO’ – ‘Wow, that was something!’. As she gears up to unveil a succession of vinyl releases, the first is a selection of four bottom heavy, all-encompassing techno cuts from an unknown artist. Drawing clear lines from the Ukrainian sound that has in turn established Nastia’s own signature, NECH001 lays the debut underpinnings on a label DJ’s can rely on; a focus on the well-designed musical components that matter.

Rising from a distinctive and thriving techno scene rooted in the purest sense of underground culture, NECHTO promises raw Ukrainian techno energy with no compromises.

Tracklist

  1. Unknown Artist – N1
  2. Unknown Artist – N2
  3. Unknown Artist – N3
  4. Unknown Artist – N4

In Summer 2020, Electric Gardens delivers its biggest and most diverse lineup yet for its 5th anniversary: Half a decade of cutting-edge producers and world-class DJs will be celebrated in Sydney’s shining Centennial Park on Saturday 22nd February 2020 including Armand Van Helden, DJ EZ, Craig David Presents T5, Nora En Pure, Gorgon City, Alan Fitzpatrick, My Nu Leng, Pan-Pot, Reinier Zonneveld live, Wilkinson and many more world class DJs and live shows.

Since a game-changing debut  back in 2016, Electric Gardens has established itself as an essential boutique event for electronic music fans across the country. Electric Gardens 2020 continues the event’s tradition of presenting top-tier electronic artists and underground sensations; with dazzling stage production, generous set times and a pristine location. It’s careful curation that has seen the event become a staple for Australian fans over the past five years, and the milestone is a testament to Electric Gardens dedication to booking exciting electronic talent, while simultaneously steering clear of trend-dependent and novelty acts.

The Electric Gardens 2020 bill is headed up by none other than acclaimed multi-million record selling artist Craig David, who will be bringing his widely-praised TS5 show Down Under. Combining his skills as a DJ and live performer, TS5 sees David fuse seasoned classics with contemporary anthems for a sprawling party set, drawing upon his extensive background in UK Garage, dance, pop and R&B. David’s high-energy TS5 set has graced the biggest festivals stages across the globe including Glastonbury, Tomorrowland and will now close out Electric Gardens in riveting fashion after sold out UK and US tour and continued Top 5 UK chart placings for his most recent singles.

Next is US house pioneer Armand Van Helden, who has very much helped define the genres with his vital work on labels like Nervous, Southern Fried and Strictly Rhythm and many more. Always drawing on hip hop, r&b and soul for his sample sources, he has a heartfelt sound with a real sense of groove that has got people dancing for decades, and the big personality continues to be a key player in the global scene.

A longtime crowd favourite in Australia and abroad, DJ EZ will be bringing the UKG a-plenty to Electric Gardens Sydney. Quite possibly the best DJ in the world right now, Elvin is a master selector who has honed his incredible skills on radio airwaves, clubs and festivals for well over two decades. Electric Gardens is also excited to welcome South African-Swiss producer Nora En Pure who will be bringing her ethereal set to the Sydney stage.
And after dominating the charts with their recent Billboard Dance #1 singles ‘There For You’ and ‘Go Slow’, one of the most in demand acts in the industry, UK duo Gorgon City will be making their highly-anticipated return to Australia. For fans of techno and blistering BPM, Berlin duo Pan-Pot and the esteemed Alan Fitzpatrick will get dancefloors moving while Filth on Acid head honcho Reinier Zonneveld will flex his skills with a punchy live set.

Bass enthusiasts will be well looked after, too: Having long established himself as a favourite on the local festival circuit, What So Not will return home to Australia for Electric Gardens Festival, joined onstage by surprise special guests for the exclusive debut of his brand new live set of atmospheric yet heavy tunes. He’ll be joined by fellow Australian hero ShockOne off the back of his 2019 album A Dark Machine, as well as UK drum & bass producer Wilkinson, who just sold out the O2, is a regular at Ibiza’s iconic Together night and always races through a blizzard of different genres with real skill. His electric set will be complemented with DJ Ad-Apt on the microphone.

The latest additions include Brazil’s leading progrssive house pioneer and enduring Kompakt label associate Gui Boratto, who always brings waves of emotions to his grooves, plus Spanish house giant and long time Amnesia resident Mar T, as well as Lucille Croft, Hoten and Ricky Cooper & Andy Ef.

The Electric Gardens story begins back in 2001 in the UK, when visiting Australian dance fans Damian Gelle and Anton Marmot threw a backyard party in Walthamstow. Inviting their DJ friends to play and charging a small cover, the intimate gathering was a success, and it eventually evolved into South West Four festival in 2004. That event still attracts well over 70,000 attendees at Clapham Common to this day. Armed with first-hand festival knowledge, experience and connections; the duo returned home to Australia and founded Electric Gardens, with the goal of providing a European party atmosphere Down Under. Five years down the track, the mission is being fulfilled every year, with Electric Gardens blossoming into one of the most essential festivals of them all.

This next chapter of Electric Gardens is set to kick off in style on February 22, and is a faultless day of dance in the Sydney summer.
