BILLY ELLIOT THE MUSICAL OPENS IN ADELAIDE TONIGHT
Festival NewsMusic News

BILLY ELLIOT THE MUSICAL OPENS IN ADELAIDE TONIGHT

written by the partae

Universal Theatrical Group, Working Title Films, Greene Light Stage, Michael Coppel Entertainments and Louise Withers Presents are thrilled that Adelaide audiences will finally have a chance to experience the magic of the multi award-winning smash hit Billy Elliot the Musical for the first time. The show opens in Adelaide tonight, December 31, at the Festival Theatre, Adelaide Festival Centre.

“It’s great to finally be able to bring Billy Elliot to Adelaide. The massive under-floor structure required for the initial production has been redesigned to allow the production to be staged in arts centres such as the Adelaide Festival Centre.  This brilliant, heart-warming musical takes the audience on an unforgettable journey and leaves you feeling on top of the world. We are so happy that Adelaide can finally experience and fall in love with Billy Elliot the Musical”, said Louise Withers on behalf of the producers.

Featuring music by the legendary Elton John, book and lyrics by Lee Hall, choreography by Peter Darling and direction by Stephen Daldry, Billy Elliot the Musical has been seen by over 12 million people worldwide.  Acclaimed by audiences and critics alike, it is the recipient of 85 awards internationally, including 10 Tony Awards, 5 Olivier Awards and 8 Helpmann Awards.

Sharing the celebrated lead role are Omar Abiad (12, from Brisbane), River Mardesic (11, from Melbourne), Wade Neilsen (13, from Newcastle) and Jamie Rogers (13, from Canberra). The boys were cast following extensive auditions, and after months of intensive rehearsals will alternate in the role of Billy in the Australian tour of Billy Elliot the Musical. All four boys are making their professional debut playing this most extraordinary and inspiring role.

Starring alongside these talented boys is one of Australia’s most accomplished performers and renowned choreographer, Lisa Sontag, as the tough but supportive ballet teacher Mrs Wilkinson. Acclaimed theatre and screen actor Justin Smith is cast as Billy’s stoic father Dad, Vivien Davies is playing Billy’s eccentric Grandma and Billy’s hot-headed brother Tony is being played by Drew Livingston.  Award winning actor Robert Grubb stars as George, a miner and the town’s boxing coach.

Other adult cast members forming this outstanding company include Adelaide’s own Zoë Komazec, Paul Whiteley and Caroline Kaspar along with Dean Vince (Mr Braithwaite), Danielle Everett (Dead Mum), Aaron Smyth (Older Billy), Damien Bermingham (Big Davy) and (in alphabetical order) Justin Anderson, Jordana Beatty, Damien Bermingham, Dion Bilios, Rachel Cole, Josh Gardiner, Isabel Hawthorne, Matt Heyward, Barbara Hughes, Alexander ‘Zan’ Kermond, , Sarah Kate Landy, Michael Lindner, Jayme-Jo Massoud, Joe Miller, Joshua Russell, David Sirianni, Lisa Sontag, Tahlia Traecey and Darren Tyler.

The incredible childrens cast includes Mason Kidd, Hamish Monger, Oscar Mulcahy, James Sonnemann (Michael), Chanel Charles, Gabrielle Daggar, Ella Tebbutt (Debbie) and in alphabetical order Sienna Balewai, Tiarne Evans, Mia Jonson, Jamie Kelly, Melody Kurniawan, Tahlia McGregor, Sienna Miroforidis, Mica Santos, Indianna Thompson and Zoe Tsang.

The hugely successful West End musical premiered in Australia in 2007 as the first international production outside of the UK, prior to its Broadway premiere.  With the first Australian tour concluding in Melbourne in 2009, this new 10th Anniversary Tour kicks off in 2019, ten years after the curtain came down in Australia. Billy enjoyed huge critical acclaim with Sydney and Melbourne audiences flocking to the theatre, however the physical design was so complex at the time, that touring beyond those two cities was not possible.  Now with some clever adjustments, the Producers are delighted that this incredible stage production is able to tour to Adelaide.

Based on the film of the same name, Billy Elliot the Musical is a funny, gritty, heart-warming and feel- good celebration following the journey of a young boy raised in a small British mining town. Set against the backdrop of the 1984/’85 miners’ strike, Billy’s journey takes him out of the boxing ring and into a ballet class where he discovers a passion for dance that inspires his family, the whole community and changes his life forever.

Billy Elliot the Musical premiered in London in 2005 and since then has been seen across five continents, winning numerous awards and millions of fans along the way. After winning five Olivier Awards including Best Actor in a Musical for the three Billys and Best Musical, the first international production opened in Sydney in 2007 which garnered eight Helpmann Awards including Best Musical and Best Actor in a Musical for the four boys who shared the role of Billy in 2008. This was followed by an incredibly successful Broadway run which had the extraordinary honour of winning ten Tony Awards in 2009, including Best Musical, Best Direction of a Musical and Best Male Actor in a Musical for the three boys that shared the role of Billy. Productions have been staged all over the world including the West End, Australia, Broadway, North American tour, Chicago, Toronto, The Netherlands, UK & Ireland Tour, Hamburg, Tokyo and Seoul.

Billy Elliot the Musical was brought to the stage by the multiple award-winning creative team behind the film including writer Lee Hall (book and lyrics), director Stephen Daldry and choreographer Peter Darling, joined by Elton John who composed the show’s score. The production features scenic design by Ian MacNeil, costume design by Nicky Gillibrand, lighting design by Rick Fisher and sound design by Paul Arditti. Musical supervision and orchestrations are by Martin Koch.

Billy Elliot the Musical is based on the Universal Pictures / Studio Canal film BILLY ELLIOT.

On January 1st 2020 Slam’s legendary underground dance party takes over SWG3 armed with another formidable line-up and Scotland’s biggest NYD party. They will kick-start the year with a line-up loaded with some of the most revered names in the scene.

Slam, said: “We are super excited to play with 3 of techno’s most exciting artists this NYD. Alongside some of our city’s best home grown talent. People said we were mad to host a party in Glasgow the day after Hogmanay but cultures progress and this event is a big success. Our third consecutive NYD Maximum Pressure is set to be rammed with ravers who want to be with us to kickstart the new decade in dynamic style.”

As well as being at the helm of the notorious Soma Records and having more stellar productions under their belt than you can count on 2 hands, Slam continually curate some of the UK’s most notorious parties including Glasgow’s Riverside Festival. The techno titans latest EP Reverberations saw Slam deliver yet another techno tour-de-force, completing the label’s relentless assault on 2019.

Joining them is a prolific producer and formidable force in the DJ booth, I Hate Models, who has risen through the underground scene to become one of the most in demand names in the game. As well as releasing his debut album VA/01 DGTL in June, the bandana-clad French DJ has been crushing clubs and festivals around the world including a blinding set witnessed at the Riverside Festival earlier on this year.

Topping the bill is Berlin based DJ and producer Dax J. His latest acclaimed EP Chaos Come to Conquer was a slamming testament to the reputation he’s built across the globe as a purveyor of world class techno. Behind the decks, Dax is renowned for filling the most cavernous of dancefloors with monumental sets of raw, unadulterated energy.

Specialising in the sublime as well as the menacing, electronic composer and visual artist Dasha Rush will be performing a unique blend of experimental live techno, transforming the Galvanizers into her own sonic dreamscape.

Bringing the energy with an eclectic mix of heavy techno and electro etched grooves is Glasgow’s own AISHA. The Lunacy resident and organiser of the seminal Soma Skool is a fresh talent behind the decks with similar skills for production which has seen her release on the likes of Soma, Hilltown Disco and Huntley+Palmers.

DABJ (Dixon Avenue Basement Jams) is another of the biggest names to emerge from Glasgow’s thriving club culture. Dan ‘Monox’ Lurinsky and Kenny ‘The Wasp’ Grieve are stalwarts of the Scottish dance music scene, specialising in the finest – and freakiest – house, techno and electro. A party thrown by these two is one not to be missed.
Also announced is Glasgow based duo Brain Dancing. The brainchild of I Am resident Beta (Ross Anderson) and Mia Dora’s Rob Etherson, Brain Dancing is a culmination of the parties, productions and visual aesthetics that have been an integral part of the city’s club culture for over five years.

Going back to back on the night are Sub Club residents and rising stars of the scene Telford and Stevie Cox. All year these two have been smashing sets across the globe, including Croatian Dimensions festival. They’re mixing knows no bounds, just quality electronic and house music – and a good time.

The event will take place across Glasgow’s iconic SWG3 complex including the Galvanisers warehouse and the more intimate TV Studio from 9pm-3am.

Last remaining tickets are available now.

Depaart are back to Last Night On Earth with ‘Migrate’

Depaart are back to Last Night On Earth with ‘Migrate’

written by the partae

Guille and Fran Zaragoza, the artistic duo better known as Depaart, are without a doubt leaving  a permanent mark in the electronic music scene. The duo from Madrid, who just keep rising , released “Do It Like You Do” with Lauer and Tuff City Kids’ remixes on Sincopat a few months ago.

Depaart, nevertheless, instead of dancing to the sweet smell of success,  locked themselves in the studio to work. The result is “Migrate”, their second EP on Last Night On Earth. Sasha’s label has taken the duo under its wing not just supporting them with this second release, but also including them in its parties. Depaart was part of LNOE’s Amsterdam showcase last month.

“Migrate” is formed by three original tracks and one remix. The opening is the homonymous track, a song full of personality and intensity that lays the foundations for Depaart’s new dimension, which, at the same time, seems to not stop evolving. “Malvatis” takes over and it does it with an almost never ending succession of layers that add mystery and enigma to this underworld. The EP continues with “Sunk”, a track that with its strength secures this new path. The release ends  with a “Migrate” remix by Kiwi where originality and breaks are the absolute starring figures.

And Depaart’s activity doesn’t end here. The duo has managed to conquer  Madrid’s audience with Tortilla and Fluido, their two weekly parties. Although, to be honest, the duo’s charm breaks  boundaries. In fact, Depaart is ready to face some hectic weeks with performances in Dubai, Maurice Islands, Ibiza (Heart Ibiza) and Berlin (Katerblau).

“Migrate” is available on LNOE on all platforms from 25th of December.

International superstar’s Denis Sulta & Bradley Zero announce Melbourne headline show!

International superstar’s Denis Sulta & Bradley Zero announce Melbourne headline show!

written by the partae

Denis Sulta has rapidly emerged as one of the most exciting new prospects from the ever-fertile Glasgow scene. (To end out 2016, he skyrocketed in at #26 on the RA Top 100 Poll, becoming the highest new entry that year). Since then, you couldn’t scroll through social media without seeing a video of Sulta absolutely owning a dancefloor somewhere in the world. A Sulta set is all about putting the ‘fun’ in ‘functional’, and you are as likely to hear a decade-old dance classic as you are an underground techno banger.

After delivering one of the highlight sets at Pitch Music & Arts 2019, certified party starter and selection master, DENIS SULTA, will play a long-awaited Melbourne headline show.

Joining Sulta will be Rhythm Section Intl. label boss Bradley Zero. One of the original Boiler Room team members, Bradley Zero is the founder of the notorious Rhythm Section imprint.

We are happy to welcome the return of two highly lauded international artists, Denis Sulta and Bradley Zero. Following a huge performance closing out Pitch Music & Arts 2019, Denis Sulta is proving to be one of Glasgow’s most exciting exports. With multiple releases on Dixon Avenue Basement Jams, Numbers and his own imprint Sulta Selects, his 2019 debut album ‘Aye Spoake Te Sumwuhn & They Listenhd’ released on Ninja Tune perfectly encapsulates his unique sound; opulent, punchy, and driving. Receiving continued praise and support from fellow artists such as Jackmaster, Skream, Four Tet, and Optimo, the prodigal producer landed #26 on the RA Top 100 Poll in 2016, and most recently won DJ Mag’s Best of British Best DJ award for 2019.

Joining Sulta will be Rhythm Section Intl. label boss Bradley Zero. One of the original Boiler Room team members, Bradley Zero is the founder of the notorious Rhythm Section imprint, an institution credited for launching the careers of Chaos In The CBD, Al Dobson Jr, Henry Wu, FYI Chris and 30/70 to name a few. Alongside his fortnightly radio show on NTS, Zero’s various outputs consistently showcase a fusion of soulful jazz inspired genres, with foundations in house music. Fresh from playing at ADE and Circoloco Ibiza, we welcome Bradley Zero’s return alongside Denis Sulta, kicking off 2020 with an epic day party.

BUDDY RYAN OFFERS GOSPEL-TINGED CLIP FOR ‘BAD FEELIN’

BUDDY RYAN OFFERS GOSPEL-TINGED CLIP FOR ‘BAD FEELIN’

written by the partae

Connecticut born, Melbourne-based lyricist Buddy Ryan today offers the visual accompaniment for very first single ‘Bad Feelin’ from his recently released sophomore EP ‘May Eleven’.

The film clip matches Buddy’s gospel-tinged style. Situated in a church it focuses on Buddy and his subtle intensity, eluding to his presence live on stage.

‘May Eleven’ showcases Buddy’s ability to consistently craft smooth grooves bolstered by his deft lyricism and sheer honesty. His penchant for rap, soul and RNB shines through with the project ruminating on a range of topics including life experiences, social commentary, karma, reflections and cautionary tales.

New single ‘Figured I’ is an infectious beast and sits in the more upbeat echelons of his recent releases, it has also recently found love with FBi and an add to rotation.

Earlier this year he revealed ‘Cherry Oak ft. Jo Jodun’ which employs a more laid-back musical style and combines with previously released singles ‘Bad Feelin’ and ‘Sixweeks ft. Mark Echols’ which caught the attention of Cool Accidents, Backyard Opera, Wickedd Childd and Hit Up Ange alongside an add to SYN Radio.

2017 saw the release of Buddy’s underrated debut EP ‘Grey‘ which centred around the downtempo single of the same name. Using thought provoking lyrics as his vehicle, Buddy talks through pain and his personal journey whilst hoping for peace.

Immerse yourself in ‘May 11’.

BIG THIEF Sell out two Melbourne dates Announce additional Melbourne 18+ and U18 shows Two Hands and U.F.O.F out now

written by the partae

Due to unprecedented demand, Love Police and Remote Control Records have announced Big Thief will play two additional shows at The Corner Hotel on Sunday 17 May – their third 18+ date and a special matinee show for U18 fans.

Following on from two near sell-out tours and a Meredith Music Festival appearance in 2017, Big Thief will also play Brisbane’s The Zoo on Thursday 21st May (presented by Jet Black Cat Music). Full tour dates and ticketing information are below. Sydney show details to be announced soon!

In 2019 Big Thief released two critically acclaimed albums via 4AD / Remote Control Records. Two Hands – “the earth twin” released in October followed on from the May release of U.F.O.F. – “the celestial twin” – a universally beloved album described by Pitchfork as“a true masterpiece of folk music from a band working together at the highest level” and now nominated for a GRAMMY in the Best Alternative Music Album category.

While some have looked on in wonderment at this prolific band’s decision to release two substantial releases in the same year, the decision was, as with every decision the band makes, eminently intentional and deeply considered. Two Hands is a partner to U.F.O.F.

In Stereogum‘s recent cover story on the band, Adrianne Lenker beautifully describes how the two albums connect and how they differ: “U.F.O.F. is meant to be more focused on the immeasurable, sort of suspended ethereal playing with textures and colours and layering in the production, staring out into the abyss. And Two Hands is more the micro, zooming into the blood and tissue and guts of being a human, the raw, bare, naked bones, not much layering, capturing just our performances in the room, just very dry, no reverbs, just skin and flesh and human, finite, physical. But I think each of them contains parts of the others.”

Ozzy Osbourne Unveils Video For ‘Under The Graveyard’

Ozzy Osbourne Unveils Video For ‘Under The Graveyard’

written by the partae

For his new video for the #1 US rock track, Under The Graveyard, OZZY OSBOURNE re-teamed with acclaimed film director, screenwriter and music video director Jonas Akerlund (who worked with OSBOURNE on videos for Let Me Hear You Scream and Gets Me Through).

Watch the video here.

The semi-autobiographical video was recently filmed in Los Angeles and features actors Jack Kilmer (as OZZY OSBOURNE) and Jessica Barden (as Sharon Osbourne). Set in the late 70s in the early part of OZZY’s solo career, the clip shows the darkness of life and how a helping hand and love can change everything.

“For ‘Under the Graveyard’ Jonas (Akerlund) developed the story into a ‘mini movie,’” says OZZY OSBOURNE. “But, to be quite honest, it’s hard for me to watch because it takes me back to some of the darkest times in my life. Thankfully Sharon was there to pick me up and believe in me. It was the first time she was there to fully support me and build me back up, but it certainly wasn’t the last.”

Under The Graveyard recently captured the #1 position on the US Rock Radio Chart and has eclipsed 5.4 million streams worldwide. It marks the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductee and Grammy®-winning singer and songwriter’s third #1 on this chart and his first in 10 years; Under The Graveyard is his first new solo music in as many years. It’s the first track from OZZY’s forthcoming album, ORDINARY MAN, due out on Epic Records through Sony Music Entertainment Australia in early 2020.

ORDINARY MAN was recorded in Los Angeles and features producer Andrew Watt on guitars, Duff McKagan (Guns N’ Roses) on bass and Chad Smith (Red Hot Chili Peppers) on drums.

Snoop Dogg and R-Wan let loose on thunderous banger ‘Turnt Up’

Snoop Dogg and R-Wan let loose on thunderous banger ‘Turnt Up’

written by the partae

Parisian electronic artist R-Wan recently delivered an exclusive pool side party in the vivid green hills of Bali’s iconic Ubud. A centre for crafts, art and dance, the town is a draw for its natural beauty, cultural treasures and its unique tropical vibe. Naming the experience the ‘Ubud Project’, R-Wan treated a group of music fans to a soupçon of musical delights within the backdrop of Ubud’s stunning rainforest canopy.

Fusing elements of hip hop with the electronic sounds of bass, trap progressive and house, the 40-minute terrace top DJ set is an exquisite showcase of open format delivery by R-Wan. For anyone living in the Northern hemisphere and dreaming of sun kissed, tropical days the Ubud Project stream is the perfect tonic for firing up those endorphins. Released during the same month as R-Wan’s latest single ‘Turnt Up’ featuring iconic West Coast rapper Snoop Dogg, the stream and single are both bursting with dollops of fun, grooving party energy.

Away from the hedonistic nightlife scenes found in Seminyak, Kuta and Legian, Ubud spins people in a different direction entirely, which is exactly what R-Wan wanted to showcase during this exclusive DJ session. By allowing music fans to savour in the dramatic imagery of Ubud’s natural charm through drone footage, R-Wan organised the sunset performance to showcase the true beauty that lies within a small part of the town’s magical jungle scenery.

Joris Voorn premieres stunning video for his track ‘Messiah’ featuring HÆLOS’ frontwoman Lotti Bernadout

Joris Voorn has unveiled the stunning video for his track ‘Messiah’ which was released last month on his fourth studio album ‘\\\\’ [four].

Directed by the UKMVA Award-winning filmmaker Wouter Stoter from Amsterdam alongside esteemed Soho production house Snapper Films, the music video was filmed in London around Notting Hill’s iconic brutalist architecture landmark Trellick Tower.

Joris explains: “I collaborated with British band HÆLOS on this single and when they sent me their vocals, it inspired me to work on the underlying music a bit more, which turned the track around quite a bit. This track instantly evokes visual memories of London for me as its where I conceived the idea for the track four years ago and so naturally felt it should be shot there. We filmed it on a cold December morning in and around Trellick Tower”.

The track itself is built around a ‘90s breakbeat and features the spine-tingling ethereal vocals of HÆLOS frontwoman Lotti Benardout, the video’s protagonist. We follow Lotti in various scenes around the West London estate and witness her attempted escape from the grips of a manipulative relationship.

Last week Joris also released his ‘Dark Science’ Piano remix of Messiah, an alias he created back in 2004 for his more house driven tracks and projects. This remix of Messiah is a hands in the air moment built entirely for the dancefloor.
