Where are you currently based and what is the music scene like there? I’m currently based in Bergen, Norway. Here you find anything from hip-hop to rock bands, but over the last few years artists within the pop genre has made their way out in the world. We have huge pop icons like Kygo, Alan Walker and Sigrid, so Bergen has really started to export good pop music! How did you first start playing music? I started as a DJ in small clubs. Mostly because my girlfriend at the time was 18 and I was 17. So the only way I could join them at the club was to sign up for a DJ.  Later when it became more serious I started producing music as well. And here we are! What's been happening recently? I’ve just started traveling around Norway for the festival season. Had two great weekends already and are on my way to the next one as we speak.  I have also started to finish up my next single which is being released over the summer. You new track 'Blame It On Me' is out now, what influenced the sound and songwriting for this single? Me, Caitlyn Scarlett, Boye and Sigvardt was at a songwriting camp in Denmark, we bounced some ideas around about the theme and ended up with «Blame It On Me», which means that you will take the blame for the relationship going wrong because you just wanted to party or «live your life». How did you go about writing Blame It On Me?   We decided early on that we wanted to make a house track for the clubs. And after I put down the house beat in the verses, pre chorus and chorus Caitlyn had an idea within minutes. So we sat down, went through some ideas and had the whole thing ready the first day. Where and when did you record/produce this? We wrote the lyrics in Denmark in aug/sept last year and had a demo ready the weeks after.  How did you approach the recording/production process? All of the vocals are recorded in Boye & Sigvardt’s studio in Denmark. We finished a demo there and kept working on the track the following months. Bouncing stems back and forth. The master project on my computer is now a total mess.  What programs/instruments did you use? I use Ableton Live 10 as my DAW and Boye & Sigvardt use FL Studio.  There is a lot of different synths on this track. I used Serum for the pads and plucks, piano from Kontakt, bass from Spire and some arps from Sylenth1.  Most of the FX is from Soundtoys. The vocal pitching and vibrato on the vocal chop in the chorus are LittleAlterboy and almost every track has a dist from Decapitator on it. When can we buy/download 'Blame It On Me'? Its out everywhere ;) What do you like to do away from music? I love to travel, and I’m so lucky to get to visit so much nice places in my job. Always great to meet new people when I’m touring. Who are you listening to at the moment? Right now I’m a huge fan of Fisher. Really hope I can catch one of his shows in Ibiza this summer! What's planned for the remainder of 2019? Finishing up the festival season and start planning for new releases. I have some really sweet tracks planned for the autumn. Any secrets that you care to share? Caitlyn Scarlet, which wrote most of «Blame It On Me», will be featured on my next release ;) Favorite food and place to hangout? Sumo in Bergen. Today Moon Duo  have announced details of a new album ‘Stars Are The Light’, set for release on September 27th via Sacred Bones. The album’s title track is streaming online now and the band have also announced North American & European touring plans for this Autumn.

The follow up to 2017’s two-part exploration into the transcendental, ‘Occult Architecture’, ‘Stars Are the Light’ is Portland-based psych explorers Sanae Yamada and Ripley Johnson’s luminous seventh album. It marks a progression into significantly new territory and sees them synthesize the abstract and metaphysical with the embodied and terrestrial. The album has a sonic physicality that is at once propulsive and undulating; it puts dance at the heart of an expansive nexus that connects the body to the stars, illustrated exquisitely on the album’s sparkling title track.

The band’s Sanae Yamada comments: “We have changed, the nature of our collaboration has changed, the world has changed, and we wanted the new music to reflect that.”

These are songs about embodied human experience — love, change, misunderstanding, internal struggle, joy, misery, alienation, discord, harmony, celebration — rendered as a kind of dance of the self, both in relation to other selves and to the eternal dance of the cosmos.

Taking disco as its groove-oriented departure point, ‘Stars Are the Light’ shimmers with elements of ’70s funk and ’90s rave. Johnson’s signature guitar sound is at its most languid and refined, while Yamada’s synths and oneiric vocals are foregrounded to create a spacious percussiveness that invites the body to move with its mesmeric rhythms. With Sonic Boom (Spacemen 3, Spectrum) at the mixing desk in Portugal’s Serra de Sintra, (known to the Romans as “The Mountains of the Moon”) the area’s lush landscape and powerful lunar energies exerted a strong influence on the vibe and sonic texture of the album.

On embracing disco as an inspiration, Yamada says, “It’s something we hadn’t referenced in our music before, but its core concepts really align with what we were circling around as we made the album. Disco is dance music, first and foremost, and we were digging our way into the idea of this endless dance of bodies in nature. We were also very inspired by the space and community of a disco – a space of free self-expression through dance, fashion, and mode of being; where everyone was welcome, diversity was celebrated, and identity could be fluid; where the life force that animates each of us differently could flower.”

‘Stars Are The Light’ will be released on September 27th via Sacred Bones. Pre-order here.

PRAISE FOR BODY TYPE

“Breathes new life into garage rock”

“Fascinating, endlessly creative”
CLASH

“Refreshingly exciting and ridiculously good fun”
The Line of Best Fit

“Their self-titled EP is really a masterclass in lines that creep up on you and resonate.”
NME

“It’s impossible not to fall head over heels for them.”

On the eve of their biggest headline tour to date, fast rising “trash can girl band” Body Type release the vinyl edition of their acclaimed first two EPs on a double-sided 12″ on Partisan Records/Inertia. The band also share a new video for EP2 highlight ‘Insomnia‘ – a tender spot on the record that feels infinite and intimate all at once, about finding serenity in nature and safety in a sweet lover’s arms.

The accompanying video was shot throughout the band’s recent debut US shows, as Body Type’s Sophie McComish recalls: “I found an old film handycam at the local junk shop. The seller told me it didn’t work so he only charged me $5. I lugged the thing all around the US while we were touring to test his theory. Turns out he was wrong, and now I have hours of glorious taped footage of Body Type’s maiden voyage outside of Australia. I see a lot of parallels between the abandoned handycam and a candid band-y van, and I’m glad I found one to capture the other.”

The vinyl release of both EPs caps off what’s been a remarkable first half of 2019 for the band. Body Type’s second EP – which received critical adulation from the likes of DIY, NME, Dork, London in Stereo,The Line of Best Fit and a host of others – was released in between the band’s debut US and UK tours, which saw them play at festivals including SXSW, The New Colossus, The Great Escape, Live at Leeds and more, while also recording a session for Jack Saunders at Maida Vale for BBC Radio 1.

These tours offered a further cementing of Body Type’s status as one of the finest new live bands out there, having already toured Australia with Pond, Alex Cameron, Rolling Blackouts Coastal Fever, Japandroids, Frankie Cosmos, Big Thief and Ariel Pink.

Be sure to secure yourself EP1+2 on vinyl while supplies last and keep your eyes peeled for a Rough Trade exclusive, limited edition slime-coloured vinyl version.

Congratulations to our Pieater fam member No Mono who today release their follow up album to 2018’s Islands part 1. Islands part 2 serves to complement and expand on their haunting debut. Where part 1 relished in being a little blurry around the edges, suspending the listener in an unsettling soundscape, part 2 pulls into jarring focus. The percussion takes on a bigger role, at times bordering on frantic, but there’s also a swagger. Snowdon’s vocals are less tender, as he searches to find connection and empathy. Yet despite the eerie energy, there is always an alien beauty to the whole, and ultimately a sense of hope and faith. The album art is an extension on the ripped artwork concept by Tom Iansek from Islands part 1. The track-list, artwork and pre-order info is all below. As with all our Pieater releases, it will be available on 12” vinyl. Islands part 2 is out now, buy/stream it here. For all our friends at community radio in Australia you can grab the track now via Airit. PIEATER IN CONVERSATION WITH NO MONO We caught up with Tom Snowdon and Tom Iansek to discuss the details of part 2, and how it flows together with Islands part 1 Pieater: What was the writing process for part 2? Snowdon: This group of songs was written mostly in the same period as the material on Islands part 1. It follows similar themes, although is generally more energetic. Our writing is an intuitive process. We experiment with instruments, tempo and arrangements, and work out how the vocals (which is always a focus) fit into the song. Iansek: The best No Mono ideas tend to come from deep and immersive atmospheres of tension, dark beauty and introspection. There are certainly vast instinctual and subconscious elements at play, and in fact most of the song writing and making would be in response and directed by these. What I love about this project is its active exploration of these as strong creative forces within our music and our lives: the forces that are unseen but strongly felt. Snowdon: My words are usually shaped by the emotional feeling and attachment I have to the song I’m writing. Often it’s a visual process, whereby the music helps me to imagine a scene, and so I’ll explore that and try to flesh it out more fully. I follow my feeling more than I do my thinking – I really value honestly sharing moods and emotions with people. That to me is the magical thing about music, that it helps people to explore their emotions, to share moments with other people, or to just feel totally elevated. Pieater: The album has quite an ominous beginning in "//Heavy State", but also a sense of exploration - it's almost like a soundtrack to a space movie, à la 2001: A Space Odyssey. What kind of motivations did you have in opening with this? Iansek: We’re looking to create a mood or atmosphere initially, as it sets the scene for the reception of the songs that follow. Like when you go to a nice restaurant where certain music is chosen, the lighting is set a certain way, the décor etc... It is preparing you to receive the food in a certain way. Snowdon: The Islands concept is about exploration and transition, through moments of elation and trauma. Part 2 is the more energetic sister to part 1, which contained more down-tempo and introspective pieces of music. In that way, neither record exists without reference to the other. “Heavy State” is the awakening into part 2. Pieater: You mentioned exploration and transition. A lot of the themes seem to be about trying to connect pieces of a journey, or trying to bridge the gap in a relationship… Snowdon: In some way the songs are all about moving from one place to another, literally, and through parts of life and in and out of relationships. That's the journey underpinning the Islands concept. The struggle, fear and sometimes excitement through deep water parts, and the safety but longing when on land. Pieater: Despite a lot of the desolate and lonely themes of the album, there is also a sense of determination and hope. The want to do better, be closer, take the plunge... Sometimes that's alone, sometimes it's if another can do it with you. Snowdon: Taking the plunge is probably a good way of putting it. Although we don't set out to make melancholic music, that's often what comes out, but a lot of the time the stories aren't of defeat but of that excitement and opportunities surrounding change. Iansek: Perhaps a highest ideal of this project is to bring some light to these darker parts of ourselves. All of us experience ‘dark’ or challenging times and wonderful uplifting moments; times of turmoil and calm; times of inward and outward-ness - this is just part of being human. This project seems to want to reflect and relay this most basic understanding of life, where excitement and fear exist at the same time, and that this is okay, this is how we grow. Korean-American artist NIve is a multi-instrumentalist, singer-songwriter and producer with an endless mission to help his listeners slow down, express themselves, and find comfort and be liberated through his music. Today (June 28), NIve (pronounced Neeve) has released his latest single Liberated, an inspiring track dedicated to empowering others through his own hardships. Listen now here: https://smarturl.it/NIveLiberated View lyric video here: https://youtu.be/wR8fqPA4RsY Liberated—which NIve announced last Thursday, June 20 alongside World Refugee Day, is an uplifting anthem of hope and consolation for anyone who is struggling in life. The words he sings are what NIve wished he could have heard when he was going through his darkest moments. With Liberated, he is expressing that it’s okay not to be okay; there is a freedom that comes with acknowledging struggle. The song is NIve’s way of saying, “I’m here for you, everything will be alright.” With the release of Liberated, NIve influences that leaning on someone is not a sign of weakness, but rather a step towards growth and healing. Alongside hopeful lyrics, NIve also incorporated breathtaking acoustic guitar that sets the tone for the track. As his voice floats above the arrangement, the song develops into a captivating, percussive, rallying pop tune, hook-laden and undeniable. Based in Los Angeles, California, but with roots all around the world, NIve has solidified his global presence in pop music by co-writing Beautiful Goodbye for CHEN, a member of K-Pop boyband EXO, which upon its release debuted at #1 in 45 countries. This past May he made his 153 Entertainment debut with Who I Am. Supported by Billboard and AllKPop, along with an exquisite acoustic visualizer, the song hit #1 on Apple in nine countries in Asia and was recently supported by MONSTA X’s WonHo and MinHyuk while on V Live in Korea. As a recent signing to Epic Records, MONSTA X is gaining a lot of visibility now via collaborations with Steve Aoki and French Montana. 153 Entertainment is the newly formed record label of 153 Group in a joint-venture partnership with Warner Music Group. It is helmed by executive producer Hyuk Shin, a multi-platinum producer whose records have sold millions of copies worldwide. Shin has worked with many leading pop and K-Pop artists, ranging from Justin Bieber, EXO, DEAN, GOT7, SHINee, NCT 127, MONSTA X, and so many more. Liberated is out now.

Miami Horror unveil new single 'Restless', premiering via Billboard overnight. Almost two years after Miami Horror's visionary EP The Shapes, the track heralds an exciting new era for the Australian project.  A combination of dreamy lo-fi funk guitar, mixed with 70’s era drums, and a sultry soulful vocal, 'Restless' sees Miami Horror step away from the live instrumentation and deeper vocals of 2017 single, 'Leila' and sink back into their collaborative and producer based roots. A direction that producer Benjamin Plantchampions moving forward, he explains, “The Shapes was always meant to be a one off conceptual project, so once that was complete I began moving back towards the original creative process that Miami Horror started with; a simpler approach to production, and a continued emphasize on outside vocalists". He continues, "For me, music has always been about completing a vision and trying to make something stand out. Allowing outside collaboration really opens me up to complete that vision without being restricted to my own skill set". Arriving today as the first single from this refreshed perspective, ‘Restless’ can be seen as a stepping stone towards this new vision, marrying funky elements of their past with a soft upbeat almost-RNB vocal. "I love putting two people in a room that wouldn't normally work together and seeing what comes of it." he says in reference to finding 'Restless'' inspiration and track collaborator, Kevin Lavitt.  Arriving alongside the track is a sepia-glazed music video directed by Keenan Wetzel (Haux, Aisha Badru), which finds an assortment of quirky characters coming together for some good old-fashioned tennis training and a spark of lust. Wetzel says of the inspiration behind the video clip, "When I heard 'Restless' I was struck with a nostalgic feeling of starting out a relationship; those first feelings of anxiety coupled with the uncertainty whether or not the attraction is mutual. I wanted to take these familiar feelings and add Miami Horror’s style to create a bright but strange world for these young people to find each other", he explains.  Miami Horror's widely acclaimed debut album Illumination (2010), featured Kimbra and Neon Indian and saw the band nominated for the ARIA's Best Dance Release. From their outset, the project has continued to garner international praise and support from the likes of Stereogum, Pitchfork, SPIN, triple j and rage, with their back-catalogue attracting streams exceeding 100 million on Spotify alone.  In celebration of The Shapes EP, Miami Horror threw a series of block parties that coincided with international collaborations in the form of murals, billboards, art cars and installations, bringing to life the sensory vision behind the project. Filling dance-floors and festival stages both at home and across the globe with their distinctive brand of electronica, Miami Horror have proved crowd favourites at festivals like Coachella, Govenor's Ball, Electric Forest, Splendour in the Grass, Beyond the Valley and Just Like Heaven, and gear up to perform at Ecuador's Funka Fest and Mexico's Corona Capital Festival this year, with new live line up additions Reva Devito (self), Nic Mulhall (Queen Magic), and TC Milan.   Living between LA and their hometown of Melbourne, the project has grown from this dichotomy, continuing to evolve and transform. With latest offering 'Restless', listeners are allowed a glimpse into the new era of Miami Horror, one oozing with unexpected collaborations and fresh sounds.

GENA ROSE BRUCE Debut album Can’t Make You Love Me out now!

by the partae June 28, 2019
written by the partae

Praise for Gena Rose Bruce

Edge Radio Recommended
Album Of The Week – Byte FM (Germany)

“bountiful guitar jangles, a husky, lower register voice and willingness to lay out truths…..She’s blossoming into a spruce Bruce.” – Herald Sun ★★★★

“A testament to collaboration and creativity as paths back from the mire.” – The Music

“This is an album of triumph in the midst of heartache, a deeply personal listen that showcases Bruce’s strength not only within herself but also within her music.” – STACK

Dot Dash and Remote Control Records are excited to share Gena Rose Bruce’s new album Can’t Make You Love Me.

Can’t Make You Love Me is a distinct and dynamic debut from a young artist with a clear vision. It is an electrifying balance of tension and playfulness underpinned by a smouldering vocal performance that leaves audiences full of longing. Melbourne-based Gena Rose Bruce is one of the newest additions to the Dot Dash family and a truly exciting new voice in Australian indie music.

There is a vibrant youthfulness and deep maturity that underpins Bruce’s songwriting, which allows Can’t Make You Love Me to swing effortlessly between earnest introspection and cool detachment with utter sincerity. Likewise intimate and ungraspable, Bruce’s vocals drive this album; a stirring force amidst the pulsing rhythms, echoes of Mazzy Star and Lynchian undertones. Add to this the masterful restraint in the arrangements and you have an album that is both instantly timeless and unmistakably contemporary.

Gena Rose Bruce will be playing shows to launch Can’t Make You Love Me at the Waywards at The Bank Hotel, Northcote Social Club and The Junk Bar on the east coast in July/August following on from her sold-out Melbourne single launch at The Gasometer Upstairs.

Listen To MY ELEPHANT RIDE ‘Beyond The Skin’ Album Out Today

“My Elephant Ride take listeners on a cosmic and soulful indie pop roller coaster with their second album Beyond The Skin”

 The Music

My Elephant Ride return sophomore album ‘Beyond the Skin’ releasing on the 28th of June.   In late 2016 the Melbourne three-piece released their debut album Into The Jungle, hailed for its sweet blend of “hazy guitars, tinkling keys and smoky vocal lines” (The Music)
Following this release the band have taken their time to craft their followup. Recorded in various locations between Bali and Melbourne, the group have closely collaborated to hone a more pop-oriented sound while honouring their individual idiosyncrasies.

The three core members of My Elephant Ride (Joe Berridge, Chevaunne Keleher and Nathan Abbey) have spent the past year writing and producing their second full-length record. Working on ‘Beyond The Skin’ long distance between Bali and Melbourne, the group have closely collaborated to hone a more pop-oriented sound while honouring their individual idiosyncrasies.

Exploring love, gender, sexuality, faith and what lies on the other side, Beyond The Skin is out 28th of June.

As her North American arena tour with Khalid continues across North America, Clairo has released a brand new track titled ‘Closer To You,’ from her highly anticipated forthcoming debut album, IMMUNITY, which drops worldwide on August 2 via FADER Label / Caroline Australia.

‘Closer To You’ debuted today as a World Record on Zane Lowe’s Beats 1 show on Apple Music this morning and was co-produced by the 20-year-old artist alongside and Rostam Batmanglij (Vampire Weekend). The track has already received strong local playlist support fromSpotify (New Music Friday, Indie Arrivals, Front Left) and Apple (Best Of The Week).

LISTEN TO ‘CLOSER TO YOU’

‘Closer To You’ follows the critically acclaimed ‘Bags,’ which has gone on to amass more than 8 MILLION combined global streams and was hailed in Pitchfork’s esteemed Best New Tracks for marking a “new kind of Clairo energy”, calling it her “strongest song to date”. Locally, the track picked up rotation adds on triple j and Sydney’s FBi Radio. Listen to ‘Bags’ HERE.

Clairo made her maiden voyage to Australia this year, performing at Laneway Festival and sold out sideshows in Melbourne and Sydney. In addition to sold out headlines and her Coachelladebut earlier this year, Clairo will be performing at Pitchfork Festival in Chicago next month, following live dates Khalid.

Last year, 20-year-old multi-instrumentalist, songwriter and producer Clairo crashed onto our radars with her self-produced debut “Pretty Girl.” The song went viral and quickly catapulted her from dorm-room obscurity to becoming one of the biggest critically acclaimed artists to emerge in 2018.

With 350-million combined global streams (and counting) under her belt, a Coachella debut in the bag, as well as sold out tours across North America, Europe and Asia, Clairo is ready to embark on a new chapter and certainly has the talent, credibility and fan base to carry her.

Clairo has featured on several prominent tracks recently, including CUCO’s “Drown” and back-to-back collabs with SG Lewis, “Better” and “Throwaway“, the latter of which is on rotation at triple j. San Cisco performed Clairo’s own triple j-added song “4EVER” late last year for the station’s iconic Like A Version, backed by members of Body Type.

Dana Gehrman – ‘These Days’ new single out + Find A Way album out Wednesday 24 July + album tour

Artist: Dana Gehrman
Album Title: Find a Way
Lead Single: ‘These Days’ (out now)
Release Date: Wednesday 24 July
Label: Independent

Reeling off the success of ‘Hands Tied’ genre-bending Brisbane artist Dana Gehrman is thrilled to finally reveal the entirety of her debut album Find A Way due for release onWednesday 24 July. ‘Find A Way’ showcases the edgy bluesGehrman is known for with a mix of upbeat, rhythm heavy tracks, and ballads with unfaltering vocals. With the album spanning across a broad range of genres, standout singles have included ‘Find A Way’, ‘Hands Tied’ and now the soothing sounds of ‘These Days’. In celebration, Gehrmanwill be launching Find A Way with a string of shows across her hometown of Brisbane at The Milk Factory and an instore performance at Phase 4 Records before travelling up to Eumundi at the Imperial Hotel and then down to NSW for the Echuca Blues Festival.

New single ‘These Days’ gives audiences an insight intoGehrman’s wide stylistic scope with a gentler sound compared to the heavier rock of ‘Hands Tied.’ Gehrman’s powerful vocals paired perfectly with the addition of Danny Widdicombe’s slide guitar is reminiscent of a more traditional country twang, before completely reconstructing the concept of ‘traditional country’ for the remainder of the LP.

“These Days’ is ultimately about being burnt out. When the daily grind keeps getting you down. Wondering if it’s too late to make a change… but it’s never too late. This song wasn’t always going to make the cut for the album, but I’m glad it did as I really enjoy singing this one… and that slide guitar” – Dana Gehrman

Tracks like ‘Give Boys Pink Toys’ and ‘You’re Shit’ push the album into politically charged heavy hitting territory, whilst subdued moments such as ‘Diptych’, ‘CBT’ and ‘Casual’remain deeply grounded in self-reflection, and relationship mending. It’s 30 minutes of danceable, punchable, huggable catharsis that showcases the refined songwriting and chameleon like musicianship of an artist at the peak of a massive career.

Tracks such as ‘Rogue Train (Rattle On By)’, ‘Grasshopper Ck’ and ‘Howling Wolves’ give the album a gritter and darker sound as Gehrman delivers the vocals with a sense of attitude and sass. ‘24 Karat Rocker’ is another Tom Petty-inspired rock out moment, while the album’s title track ‘Find A Way’ and ‘These Days’ juxtapose the rocky songs as the albums slower ballads. Not to mention the funk infused addition of ‘Hell or High Water’ that abandons the cause for genre labelling.

After spending time on the road with Tim Rogers, Mick Thomas & the Roving Commission and The Wilson Pickers and opening for acts such as The Teskey Brothers, Sarah McLeod (The Superjesus), Phil Jamieson (Grinspoon) and more Gehrman is thrilled to take her debut album Find A Way to a live crowd for a string of headline shows in her home town of Brisbane and beyond. Earlier in the year, Gehrman teased her live performances to intimate crowds in both Melbourne and Brisbane for the ‘Hands Tied’single launch. This time, Gehrman will be taking the stage all over Queensland, NSW, and Victoria.
