Where are you currently based and what is the music scene like there?

I have been living in London for the past 7 years. The music scene is great, no matter what you are into there will be a club night you can go too every weekend. There is always so much going on.

How did you first start playing music?

I was always just really interested in music from when i was really young, and when i was about 13 i got some decks from my mum’s friends son. There was about 20 techno and hard house records in there, so i just learnt with them. Alongside being really into hip hop too, i think thats why I’ve always liked to play different styles.

What have you been working on lately?

I have been working on some new music for my label Club Bad, which I will be launching this year. Also a new DJ mix compilation which will be coming out this summer.

You have an Australian tour coming up, where will you be headed?

Perth, Sydney, Queenstown, Brisbane, Geelong & Melbourne. Cant wait!

Who are you listening to at the moment?

I’m on tour in America at the moment so I’ve been listening to a lot of J Dilla, Kendrick Lamar, The Internet etc in-between shows. But in terms of dance music I’ve been really into Loco Dice’s Desolat label, and also there’s a producer called Hector Couto who i really like.

What influences your songwriting and how do you usually go about producing?

I have so many different influences from a range of genre’s, and i just try and take what i like from them and put my own twist on it. i think at the moment early Basement Jaxx would be the biggest influence on me. Just the way they wrote tracks that where so out there but at the same time worked as proper songs.

What equipment / programs do you use?

i just Ableton Live, Push 2 and a lot of vintage synths. My favourites i use on almost everything are the Korg Monopoly, Roland-sh09 and the Juno 106.

Favourite artist of all time?

The Prodigy for sure. Liam Howlett’s music changed my life and so many of his records mean so much to me.

You are renowned for your mixing, how did you first start mixing and what do you find most enjoyable and challenging?

As i said earlier i started mixing really young, i just liked the idea of mixing a lot of different styles together which is something I’ve kept throughout my whole career. Its important for me to have my own style. When mixing gets too easy thats when it gets boring for me, so i always need to keep it challenging.

Please tell us about your event series Club Bad:

Club Bad is a party i started in my hometown of Liverpool, it was initially just somewhere me and my friends could get together and listen to some good music to be honest. Ive had some of my favourite DJ’s so far including Jasper James, Adam Port, DJ Boring etc. I love doing it!

How did you come to be working with Elrow?

When the idea of me doing a record on Eats Everything’s Edible came about i went to one of their Off Sonar parties 2 or 3 years ago and met all the crew. We all just became friends really quickly really and they loved the type of music i made and the records i played in my sets, so they just invited me to do a few parties initially and see how it went. Being asked to be made a ambassador of the biggest party in the world right now is something special for me.

What do you have planned for the rest of 2018?

Just more touring and producing more music!

Favourite food and place to hangout?

My favourite is a place called Meat Liquor in London.

Australia’s favourite emo night AM//PM is going on tour next month, taking Melbourne punk quintetBetween You And Me on the road for three east coast shows in celebration of their upcoming debut album Everything Is Temporary. In response to their huge growth over the past 6 months and successful events beyond the NSW borders, AM//PM will kick off in Sydney, before returning to party in Melbourne and Brisbane.

This is the tale of a Nordic soul. Magnus Carlson – one of Sweden’s most successful male artists – announces the release of his debut UK solo album. Released by Cosmos Music, ‘A Nordic Soul’ is out on June 22nd, 2018. ‘A Nordic Soul’ is a portrait of a very skilled and experienced singer originating from Stockholm, Sweden. Meet Magnus Carlson.

Magnus grew up on all things British, collecting UK vinyl from the age of six and watching Jools Holland’s The Tube in the eighties. Indie, northern, blue eyed soul, up tempo horn driven mod tracks and bitter sweet love songs. It’s all part of his history and it’s all part of ‘A Nordic Soul’.

The album was recorded in Sweden and the UK. In part with Magnus’ Swedish band Weeping Willows and some of Sweden’s best session musicians, in part with a slew of top British musicians, produced by Andy Lewis at Paul Weller’s Black Barn Studios in Surrey.  Eighties Teen Queen of the Hammond Fay Hallam features on the recent single ‘Now That It’s Over’ and on the nod to the northern soul classic Tainted Love that is ‘The Torch’, also co-written by Hallam.

Despite being filled to the brim with Anglo Nordic collaborations and drawing deep inspiration from the northern soul genre, there is a certain Swedish melancholy that shines through on the album.

Magnus has several Gold and Platinum records under his belt already. In the past year, he’s started to make inroads in the UK too, with celebrated EP release ‘The Northern Soul Sessions’, a record that displays his deep passion and artistic mastery when it comes to this particular soul music genre.

Magnus’ mission stems from a broad musical church though. He quickly followed up the EP with a Christmas mini-album ‘Snow Like The Snow’. Recorded with his long-time band Weeping Willows, a highlight of the album was a version of Glasvegas’ cut ‘A Snowflake Fell (And It Fell Like A Kiss)’ alongside Norwegian songstress Ane Brun.

The BBC have already shown early support with plays on both Radio 2 and 6 Music, and in March Jools Holland invited Magnus onto his show for a 30 minute special – including an exclusive live performance with Magnus, Jools and his famous Rhythm Section.

‘A Nordic Soul’ is released on June 22nd via Cosmos Music. A single ‘Now That It’s Over’featuring Fay Hallam is out now.

THE SOFT MOON shares new video for “Like a Father” & announces new live dates. Album ‘Criminal’ out now on Sacred Bones.

Following the release of his latest album ‘Criminal’ earlier this year via Sacred Bones, The Soft Moon, aka Luis Vasquez, has shared a haunting new music video for “Like A Father” along with newly added European live dates for this summer which will take place following two London shows at Meltdown Festival this June.

Speaking about the track, Vasquez explains “”Like a Father” is the result of a life long internalization in regards to the abandonment of my father.”

‘Criminal’ is a confessional work. Through the stark lens of shame and guilt that has followed Luis Vasquez since a violent childhood growing up within the humming ambient sprawl of 80s Mojave Desert, here he documents the gut-wrenching sound of going to war with himself. Battling with his own sanity, self-hatred, insecurity, self-entitlement and grappling with the risk of these things transforming him into a person he despises, Vasquez has laid his feelings bare with this: his confession and most self-reflective work to date.

Steady Holiday Signs to Barsuk Records, Playing Upstream Music Festival + Supporting Dr. Dog

Barsuk Records is excited to announce they’ve signed Steady Holiday, the Los Angeles-based indie pop project of Dre Babinski. Steady Holiday’s music has been praised as “both fresh and new and like it’s been around for a hundred years, a standard from a different world” (Stereogum) and “bubbl[ing] with tension like a psychological thriller” (The Fader). Babinski has played festivals like Coachella and shared stages with Mitski and Unknown Mortal Orchestra. Barsuk will be releasing her second record later this summer — stay tuned for more details.

Steady Holiday will be playing Seattle’s Upstream Music Festival on Friday, June 1 before returning to California to open for Dr. Dog.

It is quite often that we receive many demos at the same time from a producer and we have to choose 2 or 3 of them to make an EP But this time, we were really unable to exclude some of them because they are all amazing. That’s why we decided to release this EP with the 6 tracks we received and I made a continuous mix with them as a preview.

As a wise man once alluded to, a party is nothing without an atmosphere, which is handy as Cristian Merino comes to Clarisse with half a dozen deep house bubblers. Defined by percussion on a pogo stick and a stash of offbeat vocal samples thrown into the mix, as well as driving bass from below, the king of León’s introduction to the fold, after busily introducing ELRow Music, Witty Tunes, La Pera, Basswalk, Mushroom Smile and Datagroove to his chunks of funk, is something of a unique outing for Clarisse.

As he makes you bounce and your flip-flops catch fire with a smoothness of touch, scuttling and teetering but never losing their balance, Merino provides both clubbing backdrop and front row ticket. ‘Masters Back’ begins with a bassline simmering under the sun, ‘Just Dance, No Video’ plays dancefloor ping pong, stunning clubbers with post-breakdown lasers, and ‘Wake Up’ mixes up chat about serial killers and spaghetti with a soaring build. ‘Out of My Atmosphere’ adds Reel 2 Real-style stabs, the funkiness of ‘All Clubbers’ reminds you that to be in love is everything while bedlam takes shape all around, and ‘Bastard & Elf’ rounds things off with another bassline-driven ruffle of feathers.

Merino’s six of the best has really made an impression with Clarisse. As usual being inundated with demos and hopefuls looking to follow the recent success of Vidaloca, Luis Martinez and Vangelis Kostoxenakis, they’ve decided to package all of these tracks into one EP as they felt duty bound to keep all of their quality together. Label head Mendo confirms the impact of ‘Out of My Atmosphere’ fitting the bill with a mini mix preview, truly making Merino the man of the moment.

Where are you at the moment and how is the music scene there?

At the moment I am sitting in my studio in Saarbrücken at home. The music scene here in the city is just great. Here we have really good artists, great clubs and also off locations, where regularly even during the week parties take place. For example, you can comfortably go here during the week on Wednesdays to the Silodom with its large outdoor area and good house scene but then as soon as it gets dark, techno obvioulsy takes over. On Saturdays I can definitely recommend a visit to my resident club Mauerpfeiffer. We book Djs from all over the world every weekend, for example: Vinicius Honorio, Gary Beck, Layton Giordani, Drumcomplex or even Johannes Heil, Markus Suckut just to name a few, who play together with our Residens DJs a complete club night. If you feel like it, you can go on Sundays at noon, for example on the Magnet Open Air with three / four Regional Djs playing until late in the evening. It’s just great here.

You just released your last album We Are All One, please tell us what influenced the sound and songwriting of this album?

Well, I was just guided by myself, listened to my heart. I didn’t let myself be influenced by the outside.

Where and when did you produce / record the album?

Here at home in my studio. Yes, that’s the nicest thing.

How did you approach the production process?

As I said before, I just let myself drift and in the end with the track selection and track positioning I have chosen, it will be perfect.

Which instruments and programs did you use?

I work with Ableton and in the computer with VST `s such as Sylenth1, Dune, Fabfilter, MiniMoog or ANAsynth.

How did you start to play music?

In 2003, when I was 17 years old, I always wanted to produce my own techno music. Yes, I always sneaked into the clubs early on, even though I was not old enough for that. Then I had met a very good friend who was not too far away from me and actually had a record player at home in his cellar and even hung up on it. He taught me that a little bit and I had disappeared in this basement almost every day for 1 year. 🙂

Please tell us something about your residency in Saabrücken, how did this residency come about and how was the experience?

Well then so it was around 2010, with my friend still friend Dj, Kenny B. At that time he knew the club owner Tim Grothe, who at that time ran the club invisible later Uschi & Bärbel. Tim then listened to a MixCD from me and said to it to Kenny. Hey if you want he can play with you in Back2Back. We did that a few times and half a year later I even played alone and became an official resident.

 You operate Gryphon Recordings, this is your own label, how and why did you found Gryphon Recordings?

I founded the label together with my friend / life partner Cengiz, here at our home. I wanted to do more on the whole with a mix of newcomers and good older artists, creating a network where you can help each other out and push. It was also very important to me to be able to place our artists here from the city in the label and in the scene. I am currently working with 4 new, very talented guys and girls from Saarbrücken. Let’s see what’s out there.

What are the positive and negative aspects of running your own label?

Positive in any case, that we get sent so many great music and you are happy if you have found someone again that no one really knows but is just so good and you put him on the label and you can enjoy it together. Negative is definitely that you have less time for private matters because it takes a great deal of time to claim a label to operate professionally.
 
What does the future hold for Gryphon Recordings?

This year is still a strong on strong releases on Gryphon but I don’t want to reveal anything just yet 🙂 Let yourself be surprised. At the moment we are working on the merchandise and after that we want to move on to the label nights.

Who are you listening to?

My friend just turned on Blawan’s dj set at the awakenings.

What do you plan for the rest of 2018/19?

I’m starting to produce new productions myself. I would like to continue to promote my labels Gryphon, Nala-Music and myself by just continuing to have a great time and stay healthy.

Singer-songwriter Scott Swain prepares to release his captivating and compelling debut EP, Goodbye Country, Goodbye Home,

There are two dimensions to this genre-defying EP, the main aspect being that the entire EP – including track order – is about Brexit. Swain is not ignorant to the fact that this is a topic that some are tired of hearing and therefore, he has created an alternative dimension; each song is about a particular film that has inspired him. The cinematic soundscapes of ‘Rachel’ are inspired by Blade Runner, the anthemic vibrations of ‘Its Too Late’ are based on the French film Irréversible, next track ‘Bury Bones’ reflects the same rollercoaster energy of Mad Max: Fury Road, ’All Is Well (Until You’re On Your Own)’ is an emotive ballad channelling Forty Days of Summerand lastly, ‘Oil!’ brings out the Johnny Cash in Swain as he shows off his country twang via There Will Be Blood. Each track on the EP has something undeniably unique to offer and yet Swain’s powerful lead vocal remains a welcoming constant. Fans of The National and Radiohead will feel at home here.

Having always performed as part of band, in 2016 Swain decided to go solo for the first time in this career. In 2017, Swain bought himself a baritone guitar and the music took care of itself. With an upcoming tour also in place for this year, Swain is now ready to release his debut EP Goodbye Country, Goodbye Home and re-introduce listeners to his charming, atmospheric sound.

Using music to sooth and heal, the 22-year-old Londoner’s therapeutic songwriting is laid bare once more in her latest single, the follow-up to acclaimed debut effort Here We Are Again out late last year.

Having developed an impressive online following (over 200,000 Instagram followers), the young female activist touches on aspects of sustainable living, mental wellbeing and feminism whilst sharing a very raw personal journey through her teenage years, aspects of which are firmly rooted in her music.

In Run, Ella’s supreme honesty and spiritual observations on 21st century life permeate her dulcet, husky vocals, exemplifying the songwriter’s burgeoning talent ahead of her debut live shows and further releases later this summer.

Speaking ahead of the track’s release, Ella stated: “Run was a super cathartic song to write and record, it was a message to someone I loved. I wrote it during a time when I was really split between two worlds. Run was this promise to try and stay with somebody whilst my heart was pulling me in other directions. It was a really bittersweet time for me and I think this track captures it perfectly”.

Ella Grace’s Run is released 25th May via Ont’ Sofa Records and will be available on all digital platforms.

Where are you currently based and what is the music scene like there?

I’m based in Antwerp in the small but amazing country of Belgium. Since the origins of European electronic music lays here, you can guess that people here are born with kick drums & synthriffs. I’ve toured all around the world & every country has his genre, but in Belgium, every city or village has a different genre. You can play techno in the centre of Antwerp, while in a village 20 kilometers from there you’ll have to play hardstyle to get the crowd moving. It’s such a diverse scene, ranging from the deepest of house to the grindiest drum & bass. It’s an awesome & creative vibe to live in as an artist, but one hell of a job to please them all as a DJ.

How did you first start playing music?

Imagine a 14 year old kid in a dark attic playing old techno vinyls with his friends chilling on the couch. There I was vibing on the beats of Carl Cox and Frankie Knuckles. I always had craving to make those records myself. I wanted to have my name on the vinyls that I was playing. So that’s the point I started experimenting & learning about how I could create & produce my own music.

You’ve had a lot of success with ‘In The Mood’, where and when did you record it?

 Henri PFR & me met a while ago. I contacted him when one of his songs ‘Until The End’ was played a lot on Belgian radio stations, and I didn’t really know him. I was surprised to find out he was Belgian too so I showed my support and we talked for hours about music. Since then we have become close friends & support each other’s work. I had this demo laying around and asked his opinion on it. It was a first version of ‘In The Mood’ with Veronica’s original vocal on it. I had found a cover from her of a Drake song on Youtube & she was totally the person and voice I was looking to find for this song. She delivered amazing work and brought the demo to a higher level. I suggested to Henri that we could work on it together. He was very excited but wanted to bring his own style to it, so we jumped in the studio together & made it work. We brought his original flavour from ‘Until The End’ into our song and came up with a catchy lead. We were so thrilled when we finished it that we were already dancing in the studio, hoping the crowd would like it too. And they did! In the first week of release it went straight to the Big Hit list on Belgians biggest radio station MNM, who’s list is only reserved for the very top, artists such as David Guetta, Martin Garrix, Ed Sheeran & so on. After more than 8 months it’s still on full rotation on the radios with a golden record as result. It was once my goal to own a golden record, and to have it now is so amazing. I look at it every day and it keeps inspiring me to go on and make more.

What influenced the songwriting and sound of this track?

 Throughout my career I’ve been always focused on music for clubs & events. I love how rhythm and melodies can transform a place into an earthquake of dancing people. I’ve done some productions in the past for Pop artists, mainly singers that asked me to bring the club vibe to the radios. My main goal is to bring emotion into my music, no matter the genre. 2 years back I had a little bit of a creative struggle with myself, I wanted to make something different that I was used to. Get out of my comfort zone, which was club music, and make music I wanted to make. Slower, more melodic and something I wanted to listen to when I turn the radio in my car on. So I started to make more pop music. ‘In The Mood’ is the first Pop record I’ve released. The success it brought makes me want to release even more Pop songs and there will be for sure. But for my fans who love my club music, there is no need to worry, there will be something for them too very soon.

Where did you shoot the music video and who did you work with?

 We shot the music video in Ibiza a month or so before the release of the song. Me & Henri are touring a lot so it was almost impossible to get a date set to do this. We only had 2 days to shoot all the possible footage we needed. Thankfully we worked with a small but very talented team. David Palmen & Merit Golka are a couple from Germany who travel the world making amazing travel videos. Their vibe was exactly what we needed for the video of our song. We wanted to bring that feeling of summer, love & friendship into it with their stunning eye for visuals. But because me & Henri are not experienced actors, it was hard not to laugh. We have a bunch of bloopers recorded, hopefully for no one ever to see. Thankfully my girlfriend Jelka Lepever, who is an experienced model & actor, helped us out and finally we managed to find the Oscar winning actors in ourself to come out. But please don’t take my word for it, watch it yourself.

Who are you listening to at the moment?

 Basically everything that inspires me. It’s not bound to any genre. At this moment, I think Calvin Harris is killing it with his song with Dua Lipa. He’s always changing the game & doing something that people don’t expect from him.

 Please tell us about the new music that you have been working on and when you will be releasing?

 I can’t say too much for what’s in store, but what I can say is that people can expect a follow up for ‘In The Mood’. I’ve a lot of songs on hold, waiting for the right time to release them, and I know for sure something as big as ‘In The Mood’ is in there. Also I will soon release new club songs, maybe some alert fans have already heard a few in some sets of mine, which I played to test out. I would say to keep an eye out on my socials & you’ll be rewarded soon.

Do you have any upcoming shows? If so where and when?

I’ll be back in Asia the next couple of weeks, performing in Taiwan, China & India in June. And as you can imagine, summers in Europe are crazy. I’ll be touring all around Europe through the summer but will also be a South-American tour in august. After the summer we are setting up my first North-American tour and we’ll be visiting Asia again too.

What do you like to do outside of music?

Family & friends are really important to me so any spare time I have, which isn’t a lot, I try to spend with them. In the past I’ve played soccer too, but sadly I don’t find the time to do that anymore. So basically I enjoy life with the people near to me.

Favourite artist of all time?

 It’s hard to pick because I’ve more inspirations than just one. But if I had to choose, it would be Axwell. I follow him for many years now, even before the whole Swedish House Mafia hype. The reason why is because from a producers standpoint. every producers knows how hard it is to make the sounds he makes & to make it sound so clean & simple. That’s the art only a few master, and Axwell is one of them.

What do you have planned for the rest of 2018 into 2019?

 The rest of 2018 will be filled with tours and setting up studio time with other artists & singers. There will be a lot of my new songs coming, including some club songs too. Also people will see some collabs appear with people who I believe are truly talented. Make sure to check all the socials to find all the info there.

Favourite food and place to hang out?

 I can really enjoy all the tastes of the world, but if I had to pick, I love Asian food. When I’m home, I always make myself some form of Asian dish. Some chicken, fish or beef stir fried with some rice or noodles can do wonders. As for favorite place to hang out,  any beach with a sunset and the smiles of people around me enjoying it.

Brooks continues his incredible run of form with the joyous sounds of Lynx

Dutch hotshot Brooks is back with another slamming track for STMPD RCRDS, after Byte and Boomerang, in the form of Lynx, following on from his very impressive collabs and reworks with and for label boss Martin Garrix, David Guetta and ZAYN & Sia.
Lynx fizzes over with energy and colour, its cutting-edge house sounds taking elements from electro and trance and smashing them into each other at high speed. Infectious riffs, elasticated bass and hard-hitting FX combine to make for a seriously punchy ride, and the intense euphoria of the melodies is hard to beat. The epic breakdown provides moments of bliss and triumphant joy in equal measure, making this a rollercoaster of a track.
Brooks puts himself on the map in a very big way indeed. After collaborating with Guetta and Garrix on Like I Do, which has been in the Global Spotify Top 50 for weeks and is played by a lot of well-renowned dj’s and radio stations. He also recently won the SLAM! award for Best Talent. It’s not going to be long before Brooks is mentioned in the same breath as the top dogs.
With a packed tour schedule taking him to 13 different countries this summer and events and venues including Ushuaïa Ibiza, Dance Valley and STMPD RCRDS’ stage at Balaton Sound and Tomorrowland, he is in very high demand.

When CMC$ and CROSSNADERS join forces, you know you’re headed for something big. They come with some mighty calibre on this new collaboration Baller.

On the eve of their Australian live debut at VIVID LIVE this week, DREAMS delivers not one, but two remixes from hip hop original Grandmaster Flash. Full of classic bombastic flare, old school drum patterns, and his trademark cuts and scratches, Grandmaster spins ‘No One Defeats Us’ and ‘Silence’ into a love letter to the golden age of hip hop.

A connection was formed last year when Grandmaster Flash performed alongside Empire Of The Sun in the US. Flash said today, “I enjoyed being on the same bill with EMPIRE OF THE SUN when they played in New York. Months later when I was asked to do two remixes for the DREAMS upcoming album, it was a pleasant surprise and an incredible experience. Dan and Luke are absolute good friends. Looking forward to when the singles are released.”

Luke Steele explains, “Working with Flash was incredible and beyond anything I’ve ever experienced. Speaking with him I really got to understand how much he wanted to see the dimensions of the songs, know everything about them, what they meant and what they were speaking about.

“It was amazing talking to him on the phone and hearing his fire for the vision. I could see the parks in the Bronx, the streets and clubs with the B-Boys battling it down at the command of the master controller.

“The hustle, the scents, the sound of the culture. Just breathtaking thinking about it all and the fact DREAMS has become involved with such a legend.

“He is an artisan of sound, a figure of the future, the king of style and a power for the people.” 

Emerging from the South Bronx in the early 1970s, Grandmaster Flash is inarguably one of Hip Hop’s original innovators. In the earliest days of the genre, he manipulated music by placing his fingers on the vinyl, perfected beat looping, and discovered many of the most iconic beats still commonly sampled today. It’s no surprise that The New York Times calls him Hip Hop’s first virtuoso.

Today, he’s the voice of an entire generation of 1970s hip hop pioneers. From his electric live shows, to his production role on Netflix’s The Get Down, Grandmaster Flash is at once a historian, a storyteller, and a cultural force.
