Bully’s sophomore album is shaping up to be one of the most anticipated releases for the fall, with early reviews and critics raving about the record’s explosive power and sharp and potent lyrics. Losing will be released on Sub Pop worldwide on October 20th and today the band released another track from the album titled “Kills to Be Resistant”. The song deals with the emotional conflict of unrequited love and the feeling of restraint and pushing your feelings aside out of respect for the situation.

New York Magazine included Losing as part of their Fall Music Preview writing “”Alicia Bognanno has the loveliest snarl this side of Nirvana’s Live at Reading. That it’s in a pop-punk setting, with lyrics reckoning with adulthood, only strengthens its power.” Wired Magazine also featured the band stating “full of tough-earned wisdom and egalitarian rage, Losing is a high-energy, high-impact emotional workout for everyone involved.” The New York Times featured the previous single “Running” in their music roundup telling us “The bass hops around nervously in nearly constant eighth notes, with drums syncopated against it à la the Police; a guitar on the left offers a neat new-wave hook while another one on the right grumbles occasionally with dissonant, distorted squ Bully Releases New Song, Sophomore Album Out October 20th on Sub Popawks. And as those tensions flare into multiple little crescendos, the singer Alicia Bognanno gets herself more and more worked up.”

BULLY – LOSING

BY PATTY SCHEMEL

In rock – as in life – change is unavoidable, often painful, but ultimately necessary, and Alicia Bognanno and her band Bully have dealt with a lot of it since their debut record

Feels Like hit in 2015. Now with a new label and another couple years worth of life experience, the 12 new songs on Losing feel like perfect anthems for a generation still learning to harness the power of resistance. With a vocal style that is as pretty as it is powerful, and emotionally resonant lyrics, Alicia channels the loss of innocence and reveals a raw honesty in songs that are distinctly hers.

I love Bully the way I love Sebadoh, Dinosaur Jr and the Breeders. Their sound takes me back to the stripped down and thoughtfully engineered songs that haunt me long after they’re gone and never get old. Another good reason to be with Sub Pop, who have always been associated with music that is built to last.

I feel like all my best work has been born of heartbreak and upheaval; maybe most musicians feel that way. “The title of the record –Losing – kind of says it all,” Alicia says. “After being on the road so long and coming back to Nashville we all had a lot of changes going on in our personal lives that we were trying to deal with / adjust to and that was really the motivation for this one.”

“Feel the Same” is about being stuck in the claustrophobia of a manic state of mind. It’s Alicia’s favorite song to scream. “Seeing It,” she says, is about the unique anxiety and vigilance about personal safety that comes with being a woman: “Such a blurring place to be / stuck in your own body.” Lately Alicia has been lending her voice as an advocate for gun control, women’s rights and speaking out in support of animal rights. In some ways my generation were in a bubble in the 90s; I never gave any thought to what Bill Clinton was up to, for instance – but in 2017, Losing sounds like a personal and necessary call to arms to me; we need rock n roll now more than ever.

BOTTIN SHARES VIDEO FOR “ROULEZ JEUNESSE”

by the partae September 29, 2017
written by the partae
TRACK OFF FORTHCOMING NEW ALBUM I HAVE WHAT I GAVE
SET FOR RELEASE OCTOBER 6 VIA 2MR

Today Bottin reveals a video for “Roulez Jeunesse,” a track off the upcoming new LP I Have what I Gave – which will be released October 6 via 2MR.  The video premiered via Discobelle and Bottin notes the single is a “soundtrack to an imaginary amusement park. The exact origin of the French saying ‘Roulez Jeunesse’ isn’t known but it evokes the rides and bumper cars in fairs. The ride operator would yell ‘Roulez jeunesse!’ when everyone was locked in. The expression is now commonly used to mean that you’re all set to go.” The title seems fitting given the propulsive space disco vibe of the track which also includes a sample from an interview with Dan Lacksman from Telex talking about synthesizers, saying that there’s a musical groove within the machines themselves.  The video encompasses footage of bumper cars somewhere in Italy complete with 1990’s ravers podium dancing.   Watch “Roulez Jeunesse” here:

Last week Bottin shared album track “Perfect Mind” and Blackbook said, “it is a revealing harbinger of the sort of cinematic retro-futuro-disco that will assure that I Have What I Gave will be one of autumn’s most buzzed about dance albums.”   This summer he released the hypnotic, pop-disco  “Y-A-M-L (feat. Lavinia Claws)” which existed in parts for a decade before coming together during the sessions for this album.  On its’ release Jezebel called the track “utterly transcendent.”
On I Have What I Gave, the Italian Bottin crafts propulsive, disco-laden scores for films not yet made, and introspective, mind-expanding cuts designed to ensure that people who want to dance never get caught up in conventional experiences.  Throughout, I Have What I Gave is filled with intricate and nuanced arrangements.
Setting I Have What I Gave apart from his pioneering Horror Disco and much-loved Punica Fides LPs is that this time around Bottin didn’t see to it to create a concept-album structure. Everything came at once during the writing and recording process, which no doubt gives the album its intensity and sense of immediacy.   Bottin notes, “this album came about as a stream of musical consciousness. I worked on all the tracks simultaneously – not one at a time as I normally do.”

Liam Bryant & The Handsome Devils Release Animated Video for New Single “Conflict”

Liam Bryant & The Handsome Devils Release Animated Video for New Single “Conflict”

Following on from his previous artistic style music videos Liam Bryant returns with another imaginative video for his melancholic new single “Conflict” which you can watch for the first time above.

Directed by Liam himself, the video follows the journey of a tambourine and stomp box on an adventure exploring the world. Similar to the lyrical content of the single “Conflict”, the music video portrays Liam’s search for direction in life.

“Conflict” is the second single from The Pessimist & The Optimist. It was written in a time of melancholy for Liam and delves into themes of loneliness, not fitting in and feeling uncertain about one’s life and direction.

“I think it is important as a songwriter to be writing songs that not only have a special meaning to yourself, but can be interpreted numerous ways by different individuals.  Relating and connecting to something someone else has written, sung or has said is what being a human is all about.” – Liam Bryant

Accompanied by film stars – acoustic foot stomp box, Stompy and foot tambourine, Tamby, Liam recorded his debut album The Pessimist & The Optimist at Airlock Studiosin Brisbane with Producer Yanto Browning (Art of Sleeping, Kate Miller-Heidke) and had the tracks mastered by ARIA winning William Bowden (Gotye). Liam also enlisted a very talented bunch of musicians The Handsome Devils to perform on the album. The band brought great power, dynamic and space to the songs, a sound that has now been replicated in the bands live shows.

“The Handsome Devils truly brought their own sound to the songs and from there our Progressive Folk Rock sound was born.” – Liam Bryant

Principleasure is the alias of a producer who wishes to remain anonymous, whilst previous projects have seen him take centre stage, this work will speak for itself.

Made between Principle Pleasure studio in LA and Handwerk Audio in Berlin the project is onto its second release. The purely analogue tracks came out of hours in the studio playing with the sounds and idiosyncrasies of the synthesisers and drum machines.

The result is a collection of rolling, visceral slow electro cuts, cinematic synths descend into thumping bass lines with twisted attitude.

Mary Ocher closes 2017 with the release of a further trove of songs.

The “Faust Studio Sessions and Other Recordings” 10″ is a collection of pieces whose vast majority was recorded during the sessions that gave birth to “The West Against The People”, Ocher’s full-length release that came out on Klangbad earlier this year to much praise, released alongside a sociopolitical essay and further collaborations (Felix Kubin, Die Toedliche Doris).

These two weeks of recordings were made with Hans Joachim Irmler at the Faust Studio, which is located in a small village by the Swiss border, in a big industrial space overlooking the Danube. Mary’s two drummers, Your Government joined the sessions for a short while, the rest was recorded solo. The 10″ also features a collaboration with cello player Julia Kent (Antony and The Johnsons) – in a rendition of Robbie Basho’s phenomeal “Blue Crystal Fire”, the second collaboration is a live recording with German experimental artist Hans Unstern and his band, known for their use of  self built instruments.

“Faust Studio Sessions and Other Recordings” is a mutual release of the German label Klangbad and the Swedish Sing A Song Fighter.

Praise for Mary Ocher ‘The West Against The People’…

FACT – “as sonically dense as it is politically potent … Her putty-like voice plunges you into underwater dreamworlds and places you’ve never even heard of before.”

NPR – “Few records this year, so far, are as wondrous, pointed and odd as Mary Ocher’s The West Against The People.”

The Wire – “a genre straddling pop oddity, a beguilingly strange, theatrical blend of lounge 1960s yé-yé, icy vocals, South American rhythms and battered industrial percussion.”

The Arts Desk – “none of this is avant-garde pissing about for its own sake … It will definitely take you to some peculiar places, but The West Against the People will also leave you feeling unexpectedly satisfied, and with a whole bunch of hooks echoing through your brain along with the strange thoughts.”

Hirola (collaboration between LTO & Edapollo) – stream new track

by the partae September 29, 2017
written by the partae

‘Hollow’ by Hirola – Listen Here –

“Like memory preserved in nostalgic aspic.” – The Independent

Esoteric electronic duo Hirola announce the release of their fantastic debut mini-album through new music group Phantom Limb, headed by FatCat alumnus James Vella and former Royal Albert Hall exec Mark Pearse.

Hirola comprises Bristol-based producers LTO (formerly of acclaimed electronic outfit Old Apparatus, and a highly respected solo artist in his own right) and edapollo (signed as a solo act to Bad Banda and Svnset Waves). Their music together is entrancing.. More expressive and human than straight computer music, much more obfuscate and abstract than pop music, Hirola’s debut offering has strength enough to scale multiple peaks. From deeply textured electronic production that competes with Kiasmos or Rival Consoles, to lush vocal delivery akin to Rhye, through a dreamy and hazy wooziness roughly orbiting in Boards of Canada’s galaxy. There is enough intricacy and intelligence of sound design and composition here to roughly mimic, say, a Thom Yorke remix of a Tim Hecker track.

Though founded in LTO’s piano playing (he is a piano teacher in his civilian life), edapollo’s vocals and the pair’s shared production alchemy, Hirola is more than just a skill-trade, but a mutual elevation and inspiration, a new concoction very different to its base materials. “It’s taken a couple years of trial and error to develop a sound that’s equal parts LTO and edapollo,” Hirola write.

The mini-album was created over those couple of years of honing and sharpening, culled from an ongoing body of work, continuously constructed, fluidly and instinctually, as a production collaboration. Eventually sending to Phantom Limb through an existing friendship, the record serves as a bird’s eye view over the span of Hirola’s production and songwriting artistry, its abundance of sound design, melody, field recordings and room-shaking bass delivering greatly, and yet promising more.

The record was mastered by Taylor Deupree of 12k Mastering (Loscil, Hauschka, Ryuichi Sakamoto etc.) and features original artwork created by Hirola.

Phantom Limb was launched by Vella and Pearse in June 2017, the former having spent eight years in A&R for FatCat Records, and the latter heading the Royal Albert Hall’s contemporary music programming before moving into music publishing. Hirola is its first original release, offered on strictly limited cassette and digital formats in November 2017.

CHRIS REARDON Watch New Video ‘Acid Rain’

by the partae September 29, 2017
written by the partae

Support Dates with John Power & Juanita Stein

“His voice has that rare ability to calmly convey despair without descending into self-pity.” – GIGWISE“Folk-hewn and tender, his softly sculpted vignettes have a bittersweet feel.” – CLASH

‘Spiders’ voted best track on BBC Introducing in Berkshire ‘Demo Panel’

Chris Reardon has just released his ‘From The Outside In’ EP, a collection of songs about dealing with changing circumstances; being an emotional voyeur and how the outside world affects you.The opening track from the EP is ‘Acid Rain’, an acoustic folk ballad written when Chris had just come out of a 4-year relationship, left his old band and moved to London. The video was shot on a deserted beach in Margate away from the main town. Filmed at sun down it follows an older characher who perhaps hasn’t been able to get over his past relationships all these years later. The juxtaposition of beautiful imagery and grittiness mirrors the songs lyrics perfectly.

Watch the video for ‘Acid Rain’ here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3sHtkU14TNQ

‘Seeing Double’ was written and recorded the day Chris arrived back from a backpacking trip to Vietnam. “Being back in the UK felt so surreal. Vietnam seemed like a long-lost dream.” Written by Chris as a way of processing the feelings he was having after travelling for weeks, the song came quickly.

Next up is ‘Bombay’. A hopefully journeyman tune about leaving the past behind and looking brightly to the future. The EP closes with ‘If You’re Gone I’m Going Under’, written at a point where Chris’ relationship was falling apart. Feeling helpless with little money, Chris kept the production of the song sparse and stripped back – allowing the emotion to come to the fore.

Reardon spent much of his childhood in Hong Kong, before moving to London – drawn as so many others before him by the sounds of the Beatles and Led Zep, and later entranced by the likes of Laura Marling and Bon Iver.

Ever eschewing the formulaic, for Chris, song writing is about trying to capture the moment of inspiration instead of formulating lyrics about a specific subject.

‘From The Outside In’ EP Track-Listing:

3. Bombay
4. If You’re Gone, I’m Going Under

Oliver Heldens brings the funk with new solo release

OLIVER HELDENS BRINGS THE FUNK WITH NEW SOLO RELEASE

Oliver Heldens returns this month with a massive track that’s destined for big radio play and is yet another departure for him musically. With this new release, he continues to be one of the most undefinable, un-pigeonhole-able producers of his generation.

Listen on Spotify

What The Funk sees Heldens explore even more musical territory with a fresh new sound that blends pop, disco and house and combines the ‘70s with the ‘90s and the cutting-edge in seamless fashion. Instantly infectious with its cute flutes, summery guitar licks and sassy shaker rhythms, the track really pops when the soulful vocal cuts in. The euphoria builds gradually in this feel-good tracks, with layers of disco guitars building until we hit the fist-pumping chorus. Sweet synth refrains build the energy higher as the hedonistic chorus plays out. An emotional final break sees a final section of the vocal unfold over big piano chords before we’re back in the spine-tingling chorus.

The track was premiered in a mobile game called BeatFever, continuing Heldens’ strong relationship with the video game world (he has his own channel on Twitch, for instance). The video for the track will be a user-generated piece featuring submissions sent in from his fans on social media. Look out for it soon!

This summer has been Heldens’ biggest to date, with his own residency at the new Hï Ibiza and his Heldeep Stage at Tomorrowland plus all the usual crazy touring schedule, and the magic continues into Autumn as he prepares for his massive ADE party at Paradiso alongside his Studio XL Masterclass for producers during the event.

volruptus – hessdalen ep

Interdimensional journeys lay ahead as Volruptus lands on трип with a 5-track tour of his alternate reality.

Androids navigate their way through deep space, determined to find more. One minute they’re floating, the next, racing through a continuum at twice the speed of light. Sharp broken beats create a framework for immersive pads, glitchy inflections and acid bass to wander.

Volruptus holds a state of the art lens to classic electro, exploring its form with the meticulous detail of a true audiophile. This one’s for the psychonauts.

REBORN AFTER THE ROAD

After showcasing his knack for emotive productions via various EPs throughout his career, including chart-topping singles on Hot Since 82’s Knee Deep in Sound and Dave Seaman’s Selador, the Swiss artist Several Definitions now reveals his first full-length album. It should come as no surprise that the artist found familiarity in what he calls the “Berlin style” of electronic music and notably, that of Oliver Koletzki’s Stil vor Talent.

REBORN AFTER THE ROAD is an intense and emotional affair, consisting of 14 tracks crafted using field and live recordings, switching between analogue and digital to mould a sonic atmosphere that emblazons the artist’s core ethos. Although the personal experience that sparked the inspiration for the LP is far from pleasant, Several Definitions’ style is audibly resolute.

REBORN AFTER THE ROAD, the album’s eponymous track, creates a fitting intro for the healing process that is to follow. Its airy pads and majestic strings sonically stand at the epicenter of the expressive album. Several Definitions continues to explore these sounds on vaporous slices like PONTÉCARD 32 or the more acidical LAST BREATH. The mellifluous, feminine vocals of LaMeduza on LEARN TO FEEL and HER, as well as Spanish singer Goldsun’s crooner talents on the introspective TRUST, on the other hand, showcase Several Definitions’ ability to work the human voice into his musical explorations.

Taking introspection one step further towards darker realms, SENILITY then feels like a rite of passage into the deeper and more intense segment at the album’s core. OVER YOU briefly signals a turning point, with its alarm-like synths and grave leads, which is then followed by the glitchy resistance on MODULAR SPACES. THE ESCAPE presents itself as a natural occurrence after the string of turbulent, sometimes conflicting feelings – it is a final attempt at evading the depths of animosity. Next, DANCING WITH THE VALKYRIE comes in as a determined resolution, introducing a new wave of more enduring, complacent moods, also evident on Help and DON’T STOP TO FALL. Preparing the exit by way of straight-to-the-point techno, TARGET TOPIC rolls into HER, the final piece of the emotional puzzle.

Conceptually, REBORN AFTER THE ROAD is the sonic vessel for a cathartic process, conjuring up atmospheres reminiscent of different phases in life: childhood, the strength of unconditional love, and the inevitable sorrow that accompanies death. The humanity of the emotions on show explains the music’s universal appeal, as Several Definitions offers the listener a glimpse into an artistic healing process.

NOGA EREZ x NNAMDI OGBONNAYA: Chicago beat-maker remixes Tel Aviv pop siren ahead of her first full UK tour next month.

by the partae September 29, 2017
written by the partae

NOGA EREZ

– “Dance While You Shoot (Nnamdi Ogbonnaya remix)“ online now!
– First ever full UK tour starts next month
– Debut album ‘Off The Radar’ out now on City Slang

Ahead of her first full UK headline tour next month, Tel Aviv’s Noga Erez has shared a new remix by Chicago multi-instrumentalist and producer Nnamdi Ogbonnaya.

Ogbonnaya has reworked Noga’s memorable single, “Dance While You Shoot” – the first track to be shared from her debut album ‘Off The Radar’, which was released earlier in 2017 on City Slang.

“Nnamdi Ogbonnaya’s album ‘Drool’ has been one of this year’s hightlights for me” explains Noga. “It’s been a long time since I’ve come across music with such bold sound and creative freedom. Having Nnamdi remixing “Dance While You Shoot” is a big deal for me and I am so excited about the result. Nnamdi managed to shed a new light on the song, gave it a new interpretation and was able to really mix between our musical worlds.”

Nnamdi commented: “I’m really glad I got to do this remix… There are few things that, when I hear them for the first time, can immediately captivate my complete attention, and this track (the whole album) did that. It sets a mood where I was able to imagine myself enjoying it equally by myself while reflecting on how small one can feel in the grand scheme of life and also see myself enjoying it in a large crowd going completely ape shit. Both seem equally freeing.”

The original track “Dance While You Shoot” and accompanying video by Zhang + Knight is currently nominated for Best Dance Video at the UK Music Video Awards 2017.

2017 has been a monumental year for Noga Erez. In June she released her debut album ‘Off The Radar’ via City Slang to high critical acclaim, placing herself firmly on the map as one of the year’s most exciting new artists. Live, she has already played standout sets at SXSW, The Great Escape, Convergence, Primavera, Roskilde, Siren, on tour with Sylvan Esso, plus her own album release shows.

Born four days before the Gulf War started, for Erez, there was never any doubt that, whatever music she chose to make, and whatever she felt about her homeland, she could never ignore her surroundings. Her work reflects the manner in which she’s learned to live. As she puts it, “I have this idea of giving people moments of thought and inspiration, and at the same time offering escapism and fun.”

While the music she makes in collaboration with her partner and co-writer, composer and producer Ori Rousso, exploits many of the more physical, dynamic elements of electronic music, it also embraces a cerebral sensitivity that’s made her one of her home city’s most exciting, idiosyncratic artists. As inspired by Björk, M.I.A. and fka Twigs as by Flying Lotus, Kendrick Lamar and Frank Ocean, the grainy textures and potent atmospheres forged with her synths and ingenious beats bravely straddle genres, energised further by the environment in which she’s grown up.

Uncompromising and unpredictable, sophisticated and bold, Noga Erez is clear about her ambitions. “Our way of trying to keep in contact with our feelings and fears, and of avoiding emotional detachment about everything, is music. Human beings can come from completely different places but share a fundamental basis of emotions. In my opinion, music is the form of art or communication that expresses that most accurately.”

COURTNEY BARNETT & KURT VILE Share new single + video ‘Continental Breakfast’

by the partae September 29, 2017
written by the partae

Taken from forthcoming LP Lotta Sea Lice
Released 13th October via Milk! / Matador

Praise for ‘Continental Breakfast’

“Their second single together, “Continental Breakfast,” sounds all the more relaxed, and it hints more fully at creative vision that belongs neither to Vile nor Barnett, but only to these artists as a duo. “Continental Breakfast” comes at you as lightly and as offhandedly as its titular meal of pastry, coffee, and juice, but it has the rich warmth of something heartier and more lasting.” – Pitchfork

“The song is an unrushed, unforced stunner, a twinkly jam about being friends with people in other parts of the world. Just like “Over Everything,” it sounds like a near-perfect fusion of both artists’ sounds.” – Stereogum

By now you would have heard that Courtney Barnett and Kurt Vile, two of the most accomplished songwriters of their generation, are releasing a very special collaborative album, Lotta Sea Lice on October 13th – at once a glorious peek behind the studio doors of two acclaimed artists and an unabashed celebration of their unique, longstanding friendship.

After the runaway success of opening single ‘Over Everything’, the video for their magical new single ‘Continental Breakfast’ gently pushes the door open just a little bit further. Using intimate home footage shot over four days of Kurt and Courtney in their respective family environments surrounded by friends and relatives, ‘Continental Breakfast’ goes beyond being a mere music video and becomes a mini documentary of sorts, capturing candid, honest moments that show the loving and playful nature of both musicians.

Director Danny Cohen says:

“‘Continental Breakfast’ was made while spending time with Courtney and Kurt in Melbourne and Philadelphia, it’s an intimate home movie into their lives and the time spent with family and friends between recording /touring. Shot on 16mm, the mini-documentary captures honest moments that show the loving and playful nature of both Courtney and Kurt. It was such a treat to experience life with Courtney and Kurt in their natural habitats. It really left me feeling like part of the family and hopefully fans can feel that too.”

It’s just another delightful layer to what is already promising to be one of the most compelling albums of the year.

‘Continental Breakfast’ is now available everywhere. Pre-order Lotta Sea Lice here.
