BICEP SHARE ‘VALE’, THE THIRD SINGLE FROM THEIR FORTHCOMING SELF-TITLED ALBUM OUT 1ST SEPTEMBER ON NINJA TUNE

BICEP SHARE ‘VALE’, THE THIRD SINGLE FROM THEIR FORTHCOMING SELF-TITLED ALBUM OUT 1ST SEPTEMBER ON NINJA TUNE

+ Bicep London Shows – 19th Sept Rough Trade East & 11th Nov Electric Brixton

“What sets apart Bicep from their big-tent contemporaries is their ability to slow things down”
Pitchfork (on ‘Glue’)

“It’s laser focused in the pursuit of pleasure, and makes absolute sense as a complete album”
Mixmag (9/10)

Earlier this summer, Bicep – the Belfast-born, London-based duo of Matt McBriar and Andy Ferguson – announced their eponymous debut album would be released September 1st via Ninja Tune. Since announce, the prolific duo have shared ‘Aura’, a propulsive club track and ‘Glue’, which reached #1 inSpotify’s UK Viral charts, a cut which embodies the raw energy of UK rave culture and could have emerged from the studio of Orbital or The Future Sound Of London at their trailblazing best. Today (premiered by The Fader), they share the album’s third and final single, ‘Vale’, a sprawling and atmospheric house cut, beautifully illustrating the album’s sentimentality.

The duo also look forward to playing taking their epic live show to New York & Los Angeles this October, as well as a string of European tour dates, including curating a Feel My Bicep line up at The Warehouse Project in Manchester and Pitchfork’s Paris festival this autumn.
See the full set of dates below.

The album “Bicep” is the perfect summation of the duo’s career to date – it’s a sonic tour of their history touching the cornerstones of underground club culture. Matt and Andy have pulled off the rarest of feats, to make a singularly unique electronic record founded on the blueprint of classic house, techno, electro and Italo disco, but flipped and morphed into a fresh design bearing the unique Bicep sonic signature. It’s a perfectly succinct album: loose, raw and energetic enough for the dancefloor, yet refined, artfully composed and contemplative enough for home listening. It is undoubtably one of THE dance albums of the year.

Bicep are first and foremost music lovers with a deep-rooted knowledge and passion for music of all varieties. Over the span of their 10-year career, they have celebrated the music that inspires them via their Feelmybicep blog. Founded in 2008, its runaway success (it now sees over 100,000 visitors a month) spawned a record label of the same name, a club night, and took the duo out of the UK and embedded them on the international stage via highly sought after DJ sets that reflected the eclecticism celebrated on their blog. Accordingly they are venerated as trusted and esteemed curators in electronic music today.

The formidable DJs have toured the world over, curating and selling out a long list of Feel My Bicep parties including a 12-week residency at XOYO and their annual Italo Disco parties. In 2016 Andy and Matt built and tested a roof-raising live show, which earlier this year took Coachella, Glastonbury andPrimavera festivals by storm. With the Electric Brixton stop on
the forthcoming tour already sold out, the Roundhouse date is the next stepup the duo’s ever-higher ladder of live accolades.

Beach Slang Announces Quiet Slang Project + EP

by the partae August 31, 2017
written by the partae
BEACH SLANG ANNOUNCE QUIET SLANG EP WE WERE BABIES & WE WERE DIRTBAGS
OUT OCTOBER 20TH ON POLYVINYL RECORDS
CELLO, PIANO AND VOICE. PLAYED SOFTLY. LISTEN TO QUIET SLANG’S “BAD ART & WEIRDO IDEAS”

FULL LENGTH COMING IN 2018

Beach Slang may have started off their last album, A Loud Bash Of Teenage Feelings, with the lyrics, “play it loud, play it fast, play me something that will always last,” and certainly lived by that ethos with their raucous live shows. But this fall, James Alex will debut his newest project, aptly titled Quiet Slang, with the We Were Babies & We Were Dirtbags EP, where he plays solo with a contributing pianist and cellist.

The EP will include two Beach Slang songs, as well as, covers of The Replacements and Big Star (both covers being exclusive to this record). Pre-order the EP HERE. (see full tracklisting below). A cassette version of the EP will be available on Cassette Store Day this October 14th.

About Quiet Slang, Alex says, “I suppose we’re all chasing something that resembles salvation, something that calms our bones. Maybe this is some small slice of that. Maybe it’s not. Maybe it’s chaos in soft clothes. Maybe it’s frightened. Maybe it’s fearless. Maybe it’s both. Or maybe it’s nothing. I don’t know, but I think about this: one day I’m going to be dust. And when my soul splits, maybe this will be the thing that sneaks me through the gates. If not, well, those are the breaks.”

WE WERE BABIES & WE WERE DIRTBAGS Tracklisting:

  1. “Future Mixtape For The Art Kids”
  2. “Bad Art & Weirdo Ideas”
  3. “Androgynous” [The Replacements]
  4. “Thirteen” [Big Star]

The Beards Release Video of Their Last Ever Show On Comb-Shaped USB Stick

The Beards’ record-breaking and beard-shaking 2016 Farewell Tour culminated with a massive final show in their hometown of Adelaide, South Australia. Captured on film in front of a packed-to-the-rafters crowd at the iconic Governor Hindmarsh Hotel, The Beards delivered a truly memorable sign-off to a remarkable live career. Now, the band is pleased to give fans and newcomers alike the chance to re-live every sweaty moment of that momentous occasion as they present the full 2hr concert in 1080p, loaded onto an awesome and unique Beards comb-shaped USB stick.

“I know we say this about every gig, but that show truly was the beardiest gig ever” reflects drummer John Beardman Jr. “Now with the release of the video, our timeless pro-beard message will continue to be heard throughout the ages. Plus it’s on a comb-shaped USB which is totally boss.”

This limited release will be sold exclusively through The Beards online store, and will be available worldwide on World Beard Day,September 2nd 2017. Gone from touring, but surely never forgotten by the beard-loving Australian public, The Beards pro-beard campaign continues to live on.

Paris & Simo Team Up With Karen Harding for Feel-Good “Come As You Are”

Artists: Paris & Simo ft. Karen Harding
Title: Come As You Are
Label: Physical Presents
Release date: 25 August 2017

Buy / Stream

In a world where it’s difficult to be vulnerable for fear of judgement and scorn from others, the electronic music scene has always been a safe haven for self-expression, no matter how weird or “out there.” Paris & Simo team up with vocalist Karen Harding on their new single “Come As You Are,” which perfectly embodies the free-spirited, authentic vibe of the music scene. With empowering lyrics and a melodic, grooving bassline, “Come As You Are” is the type of song you can both belt out in the shower and sing to with your best friends at the festival stage. “We firmly believe that everyone should have freedom of expression without being judged to share their ideas,” say Paris & Simo of the collaboration. “This is a feel good track which exudes those positive vibes.” “Come as You Are” is Paris & Simo‘s first track released on boutique record label Physical Presents, which also houses Bobby Love and Felix Cartal on its roster.

Since winning a remix contest of Tiesto‘s “Work Hard Play Hard” in 2011, Paris & Simo have quickly risen to the top of the international circuit as one of the most promising up-and-coming duos out there. First signed to Hardwell‘s Revealed Recordings, their original productions such as “Nova,” “Tundra,” “Wait,” and “Not Alone” have garnered support from industry heavy weights, including Nicky Romero, Martin Garrix, NERVOand more. However, it’s their ability to produce uniquely styled, dynamic tracks has brought them widespread acclaim, with releases on Spinnin’ Records, Armada Music, Musical Freedom and many others, as well as slots at the world’s best festivals and clubs, like EDC and Tomorrow World. Paris & Simo have been taking on 2017 with full force; “Come As You Are” follows “Evermore” on Armada Music as well as “Keep Me Close” and “Sleep Talk” on Dance Music heavyweight 3LAU‘s record label Blume. We can’t wait to see what this duo comes up with next!

Parlour Gigs Locks In Tour With Struggle With Glory

Struggle With Glory – Parlour Tour Set To Be A Huge Success

Since announcing his upcoming tour of Struggle With Glory via Parlour Gigs, Harry James Angus’ new project has been inundated with requests from fans for the show to play in their backyards and lounge rooms.
Parlour have had over 140 applications to host Struggle With Glory – their most popular tour in a 2 and a half year history. So far 22 gigs nationally have been locked in, with more being added daily. This result is not surprising given that Harry is the well-loved front man of one of the countries most prolific bands, The Cat Empire.

“We’ve never seen a response like this for a Parlour Tour. Harry has some of the most dedicated fans in the country. We couldn’t be more excited to be bringing such an incredible musician into homes around the country.” – Matt Walters, co-founder of Parlour Gigs Fans can still offer to host a Struggle With Glory Parlour show, by going to

Struggle With Glory is a show written by Harry around ancient Greek Mythology, performed with a 9-piece jazz band including a gospel choir.  Parlour hosts and their guests can expect a cut down version of the show in their lounge-rooms.  Since an industry launch less than 3 weeks ago, the big band version of the show has already been booked for festivals across 5 states within Australia next year, as well as attracting offers from with international festivals. You can check out He Took The Fire, a song about the tale of Prometheus, his battle with Zeus and rescue by Hercules, from Struggle With Glory, here:

Parlour was launched in 2015, and since then they have facilitated over 600 gigs in backyards, kitchens, living rooms, halls and all other spaces right across the country. In fact, around 50% of Parlour’s gigs are held in regional Australia – some in very remote areas where there are no live music venues.
Struggle With Glory’s tour should be no different, with shows already booked across Australia from Thornbury to Tallebudgera, and Hawthorn to Hazelbrook.

It is free to sign up, and by setting up a Parlour gig you not only have the opportunity to have your favourite artist play to your family and friends in the comfort of your own home, but you’re helping to support the local music industry too.

Polaris announce their new album, The Mortal Coil out November 3. Watch the video for new single, The Remedy.

POLARIS ANNOUNCE NEW ALBUM, THE MORTAL COIL  OUT NOVEMBER 3 VIA RESIST RECORDS

WATCH THE VIDEO FOR NEW SINGLE, THE REMEDY THE REMEDY AUSTRALIAN TOUR IN OCTOBER

The upper echelon of our heavy music hierarchy needs to make a little room as South-Sydney five-piece,Polaris announce their highly anticipated debut album, The Mortal Coil out November 3 via Resist Records.

Pre-Order The Mortal Coil now from www.polarisaus.com.au

The Mortal Coil was recorded in Polaris’ self-made studio in Mollymook, NSW, where they shipped American tandem, Carson Slovak and Grant MacFarland of Atrium Audio to oversee the recording. No strangers to success themselves, the hotly-tipped duo most recently produced, engineered and mixed August Burns Red’s Grammy-nominated album, Found In Far Away Places.

Guitarist Rick Schneider talks about the recording of The Mortal Coil, “Recording The Mortal Coil was unlike any studio experience we’d had before, both in location and environment. A few hours south of Sydney we rented a holiday house, not knowing how well it would suit our needs. We managed to set up two work stations and quickly found ourselves in a focused, yet highly relaxed work environment. While stress would inevitably makes its way into the process, the end result is something we are all very proud of, and I’ll personally always look back on that month fondly.”

Polaris unveil brand new single and video, The Remedy. “The lyrics for this song are introspective in a very stark, critical way – it’s a song about feeling trapped by your own bad habits, feeling like you’re just stumbling around blindly making mistake after mistake without really learning anything from it. We’ve always tended mostly towards writing from a very personal, vulnerable place and I think lyrically there’s a lot of uncomfortable truths on this record.” explains drummer, Daniel Furnari.

“Filming for The Remedy took place over a single afternoon at mine and Daniels old high school, who were kind enough to let us use their green screen. Unlike previous videos we’ve done, we all shot our takes individually which posed as somewhat of a challenge without other people playing around us to feed off of. We chose to work with the guys at Red Boss again as we felt they suited the project and were really able to guide and expand on the idea that we had.” says bassist/vocalist, Jake Steinhauser

Those eager to see Polaris shred live won’t have to wait long, as the quintet will be performing atBigsound on Wednesday 6 September at 256 Wickham and hitting the road this October for The Remedy Australian Tour with special guests Belle Haven, Deadlights and Daybreak before they head to Europe in November for a month long stint on the Never Say Die! tour with Emmure, Deez Nuts, Chelsea Grin, Sworn In, Kublai Khan and Lorna Shore.

Tickets for The Remedy Australian Tour are on sale now at www.polarisaus.oztix.com.au.

Get in quick as Melbourne’s first show sold out within days and tickets for the remaining shows are flying out the door!

Three years of tireless touring, boundary pushing writing and independent recording saw Polaris groom an army of supporters that’s already the envy of many in the heavy music realm, all of which culminated in the unveiling of the Guilt & The Grief in January of 2016. Whereas most self-released EPs register as a mere blip on the radar, Polaris’ sophomore disc landed at #34 on the nation’s ARIA chart, as well as a head-turning #2 finish on the AIR polls!

They have shared the stage with fellow prog-metal enthusiasts Periphery and Northlane, Hellions, Parkway Drive and recently joined British powerhouse While She Sleeps, Japanese favourites Crossfaith and Byron Bay eco-warriors In Hearts Wake on their massive Ark tour around the country

MUSE

ANNOUNCE NOTHING BUT THIEVES
AS VERY SPECIAL GUESTS FOR BOTH
AUSTRALIAN SHOWS

NO FURTHER SHOWS TO BE ADDED – FINAL TICKETS ON SALE NOW

Frontier Touring are thrilled to confirm that English five-piece Nothing But Thieves will join Muse as special guests at their Sydney and Melbourne arena shows this December. With no further dates to be added to the tour and limited tickets remaining, fans are encouraged to act quickly to not miss one of the best live shows in the world!

The two bands are no strangers to life on the road together; Nothing But Thieves supported Muse on all 16 dates of their UK and European tour earlier this year, picking up rave reviews in the process.

Nothing But Thieves 2015 self-titled debut album highlights lead singer Conor Mason’s versatility and swooning falsetto on tracks ‘Itch’, ‘Trip Switch’ and ‘Wake Up Call’, carrying raw emotion infused with rock star vibes.

The alt-rockers highly anticipated follow-up album Broken Machine is set for release on 8 September through Sony. Teaming up with Mike Crossey (The 1975, Foals, Arctic Monkeys) for their sophomore release, Nothing But Thieves’ lead single ‘Amsterdam’ is visceral and momentous breaking for a beautiful moment in the middle which feels like the calm in a sea storm. ‘Sorry’ and ‘I’m Not Made By Design’ paint the album’s theme: systems of control and how to challenge them.

‘This band have been marked for greatness from the start, their talent has afforded them amazing opportunities and what they have lacked in experience they have made up for in fearlessness.’ – Rockshot

‘Stage-owning presence; spicy songwriting; a completely unique and inimitable collective personality. These guys have it all.’
– Leon TK

Since forming in 1994, Muse have released seven studio albums. Their latest Drones, released in June 2015, debuted at # 1 in 21 countries around the world, was the trio’s first #1 album in the United State and third album to reach #1 on the ARIA Album Chart. Drones features hits ‘Dead Inside’, ‘Psycho’ and ‘Dig Down’.

Other Muse hit singles include ‘Starlight’ and ‘Supermassive Black Hole’ from their Black Holes and Revelations album whilst The Resistance featured the ‘Uprising’ and global smash ‘Undisclosed Desires’.

Widely recognised as one of the best live bands in the world, Muse have won numerous music awards including two Grammy Awards, an American Music Award, five MTV Europe Music Awards, two Brit Awards, six NME Awards and six Q Awards amongst others.

Full Australian tour dates for Huxley

by the partae August 31, 2017
written by the partae

Huxley

Tour Dates

Thursday 12th October: Electric Rush, Queenstown
Friday 13th October: Pawn & Co., Melbourne
Saturday 14th October: Grand Hotel, Wollongong (Day)
Saturday 14th October: Chinese Laundry, Sydney

Huxley (aka. Michael Dodman) has well and truly landed. With a fetish for the underground and an eye for the big time, the Englishman has taken his driving tech house to a global level and nobody’s complaining. As we speak Dodman is taking full advantage of the European summer with shows that include fabric in London, Sankeys in Ibiza, STRAF_WERK Festival in Amsterdam and further slots in Paris, the Netherlands and even The States.

Huxley has signed his work to labels such as Hypercolour, Tsuba, 20:20Vision and now Moon Harbour with his latest three-track EP ‘Careo’. Upon release of his Moon Harbour debut he let slip that ‘Careo’ is the “start of a few big releases which are more on the tip of where I started from” (back in 2009). And the start wasn’t too bad at all. Since then he received praise from Resident Advisor as a breakthrough artist in 2012, as well as his track‘Let It Go’ getting plenty of love as it scored a position in their top 50 tracks of the same year at #9.

It is fair to say that, in 2016, Huxley has fully arrived. Still young but with experiences in the booth and studio well beyond his years, he has a fine array of tools at his disposal. Over the last seven plus years, the friendly character has excelled at many different styles, often ahead of the curve. He does well swung drums as well as bass, main room house and deeper, musically accomplished offerings that stir real emotion.

Proof of that lies in his varied and vital discography. Coming on labels like Hypercolour, Tsuba and 20:20Vision, it includes many club hits and plenty of handy DJ weapons, but also an ambitious and widescreen debut album on Aus Music, which has become a regular home.

Always refusing to stay in one sonic niche for too long, Huxley – whether working solo or with close friends like Sam Russo or Ethyl – switches up his sound, tries new things and colours outside the lines with every new outing. Not afraid of a big hook or slaying bassline, he is an artist who unites a variety of sounds, styles and scenes with ease, and always proves as fun as he is well informed. As a DJ, Huxley is someone as comfortable headlining a vast festival stage as he is holding down a small and sweaty basement. He does so from Africa to Australia and is the sort of selector who always delivers a slick, high impact dose of the good stuff. Such is his definitive sense of taste that he continues to lead from the front on his own Rinse FM show. It is there he welcomes exciting guests such as And.ID, Truncate and Vin Sol, and there that you get a wider window into his musical world.

The next project on his horizon is No Idea’s Original, an outlet for a wide range of house and techno sounds from Huxley and peers. It has also developed into a party series that has showcased the same sort of fad free, impactful club music that has made Huxley the much loved headline maker he is.

WAJU FT. KYLE THE HOOLIGAN RELEASE NEW SINGLE: “4 ME” Out Today, August 18th, Via Lowly

“WAJU and Kyle The Hooligan are a certified musical match made in heaven; with WAJU’S vibey lyrics and Kyle’s ability to interpret and enhance any track he comes across, there was no way “4 Me” wouldn’t be an instant hit.”
-MILK

Proving a mailable talent across musical genres, New York producer/ songwriter, WAJU, has become renowned for consciously and continuously evolving his production styles. The innovative producer has built an eclectic ear while residing in both New York and Sweden, and now boasts an international resume that includes working closely with an unnamed artist from Stockholm on smash debut single “FADED,” Australian artist NYNE, and ongoing projects with R&B newcomer Teflon Sega and Atlanta’s Kyle the Hooligan on hit single “Liquor with No Juice.”

Continuing his collaboration with Kyle The Hooligan, WAJU is now unveiling a brand new second single “4 Me.” Proving a perfect sonic match, WAJU’S smooth drum patterns and carefully crafted song composition provide a moving foundation for Kyle the Hooligan’s soothing, soulful vocals to relay a highly resonating message. According to the artist, “4 Me” draws its inspiration from “a person fighting the temptations of being with other women and struggling to be a good man.” MILK proclaims on the single’s premiere, how the track’s story is a “real, raw, honest window into someone’s life, and that makes it all the more impactful.”

Look for WAJU’S upcoming music video “4 Me” set to release in the next few weeks, and additional original releases coming in 2017 from the New York Producer.

Bicep share video for “Aura”; Self-titled debut album out this Friday

BICEP SHARE VIDEO FOR “AURA” Debut Album Bicep out this Friday on Ninja Tune via Inertia Music

Ahead of their debut self-titled album release this Friday, Bicep – the Belfast-born, London-based duo of Matt McBriar and Andy Ferguson – today release their first ever official music video for recent single “Aura”. Premiering on NPR, the video was directed by Matilda Finn, who is just off the back of directing “Lost” by Danny Brown.

The video, which was inspired by the definition of Aura – the distinctive atmosphere or quality that seems to surround and be generated by a person, thing, or place – is a journey into a dream sequence where the viewer follows an elusive figure and those that are drawn to him on a journey to the edges of humanity.

The album Bicep out this Friday September 1 on Ninja Tune via Inertia Music is the perfect summation of the duo’s career to date – it’s a sonic tour of their history touching the cornerstones of underground club culture. It is undoubtedly one of THE dance albums of the year.

Earlier this year Bicep took Coachella and Primavera Sound festivals by storm and sold out their recent London show at Village Underground in 3 minutes flat. Following the album’s release, they’ll embark on an extensive live headline world tour including a stop at Electric Brixton in London.

PRAISE FOR BICEP

“A slice of tranquil breakbeat better suited for sunrise
comedowns than peak-hours sets.
”
Pitchfork on “Glue”

“They’re leading a new wave of eclectic electronic music
that prizes curatorial taste above all else.”

NPR, Songs We Love for  “Aura”

“Sending shockwaves through dancefloors
across the world.
”
Mixmag on “Aura”

“Stormy lead single.”
THUMP on “Aura”

“Bicep has harnessed and unleashed aural magicality
across Aura’s bubbly synth melodies and
driving bass-line.

written by the partae

JUDE SHUMA RELEASES NEW SINGLE: “LEMONADE” Featured On Upcoming EP ‘Reflection‘ OutSeptember 22nd

STREAM: SoundCloud | Spotify | iTunes

“Jude has a knack for hypnotic melodies with a lo-fi sound and ‘Lemonade’ is no exception.”
-Culture Collide

Chicago-native singer, songwriter, and multi-instrumentalist Jude Shuma has championed a indie-meets-chillwave sound that finds its undoubted charm in it’s penchant for a psychedelic style. To date, Shuma has released two critically-applauded EPs, ‘Afternoonified,’ ‘Biggest Hits,’ and ‘Insomnium,’ that have awarded the artist syncs in some of TV’s most recognizable programs including HBO’s Ballers, CW’s Riverdale, and ABC’s Quantico.

Now, Shuma is gearing up for the release of a brand new project- a full-length EP titled ‘Reflection‘ out September 22nd. For fans’ first glimpse into Shuma’s EP, today, he is sharing the first cut from ‘Reflection‘ with debut single “Lemonade.” This new offering from Shuma will ring a bell with those already familiar with Shuma’s work thanks to the track’s lo-fi aesthetic built from the combination of strummed guitar melodies, raw vocal composition, and earworm lyrics.

Up next, Shuma will be preparing for the next single from the ‘Reflection’ EP, the project’s title track, out September 15th, and the full EP release on September 22nd.

Wolf Parade parade share “You’re Dreaming”

by the partae August 31, 2017
written by the partae

WOLF PARADE SHARES “YOU’RE DREAMING” Cry Cry Cry out Friday October 6 on Sub Pop via Inertia Music

“A grand, searching, theatrical rocker.”
Stereogum on “Valley Boy”

“[It] exemplifies Wolf Parade’s unique combination of energetic,
textural sounds with complex, emotional lyrics and
— if anything — proves the band is definitely back
and ready to make up for lost time.”

Paste on “Valley Boy”

“Wolf Parade are not just great pop songwriters but they really
know how to let loose as musicians, and the jammy instrumental
bridge of “Valley Boy” is a fine example of that.”

Brooklyn Vegan

“An exuberant new song.”
Uproxx on  “Valley Boy”

Wolf Parade’s “You’re Dreaming” is a politically-charged standout from Cry Cry Cry, the group’s forthcoming new album out Friday October 6 on Sub Pop via Inertia Music.

“You’re Dreaming”, the follow up single from “Valley Boy”, is urgent power pop with lyrics inspired by the shock and confusion following the 2016 election (“All these scenes of shattered glass / All your systems in collapse“). Irreverent new animations from returning collaborator and visual artist Scorpion Dagger (“Valley Boy”) accompany the track.

Wolf Parade announced its return to the live stage in early 2016, after a five-year hiatus, scheduling multi-night residencies that May in New York, London, and Toronto to support of Apologies to the Queen Mary, the reissue of its classic, Sub Pop debut. Tickets sold out within a matter of hours.  As the May shows neared, Wolf Parade surprised fans again, with a self-titled-and-released EP’s-worth of new material. The excitement surrounding the band’s return led to marquee festival appearances and late night TV performances on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert, Conan and Last Call with Carson Daly.

ABOUT WOLD PARADE’S CRY CRY CRY

The soaring choruses, rousing anthems, sprawling guitars and chaotic keys that make up Wolf Parade are on proud display over the course of Cry Cry Cry, the band’s thunderous first album in seven years.

Wolf Parade’s unique combination of sounds and influences, spearheaded by electric co-frontmen Spencer Krug and Dan Boeckner—is a complex yet relatable, energetic brew of glam, prog, synth-rock, and satisfying discomfort—helped define 2000s indie rock with three critically celebrated albums, and propelled a growing Wolf Parade fandom even after the band went on a then-indefinite hiatus in 2010.

Cry Cry Cry is their first album to be produced by Pacific Northwest legend John Goodmanson (Bikini Kill, Sleater-Kinney, Unwound) at Robert Lang Studios outside of Seattle, and is accompanied by a renewed focus and the creativity of a band that took their time getting exactly where they needed to be. It’s also a homecoming to Sub Pop, which released all three of the band’s previous albums.

“The band itself is almost a fifth member of the band, something more or at least different than the sum of its parts,” says Spencer Krug. “We don’t know who or what is responsible for our sound, it’s just something that naturally and consistently comes from this particular combo of musicians.”

“Once we got back together, I was playing guitar, writing and singing in a way that I only do while I’m in Wolf Parade,” says Dan Boeckner, who shares primary lyrical and singing duties with Spencer. “It’s just something that I can’t access without the other three people in the room.”

In the time apart, the band scattered geographically and focused on family and other work–Spencer on his solo project Moonface, Dan on his bands Handsome Furs, Operators, and Divine Fits (with Spoon’s Britt Daniel), and Dante De Caro on records with Carey Mercer’s Frog Eyes and Blackout Beach. And that time allowed for an even stronger, tighter band to emerge.

Eventually, Spencer, Dante, and Arlen found themselves all back living on remote Vancouver Island, accompanied by a population density less than that of Alaska, and the tranquility that leads to creative emanations like a government-sponsored bathtub race. With Dan on the same coast in Northern California, discussions began about picking things up where they left off.

“All of our albums are always a reaction to our last one,” says Arlen. “Expo 86 (2010) was about as sparse as we get, which is usually still pretty dense, and this time we wanted to make the palette a little larger.” Adds Dante, “Expo was a real rock record. We just sort of banged it out, which was kind of the point.” Cry Cry Cry, on the other hand, is more deliberate in its arrangements and embrace of the studio process. “If a part was going on for too long it would get lopped, you know?” says Dan. “That being said, there are two very long songs on the record and I don’t think it would be a Wolf Parade record if it didn’t have some kind of prog epic.”

“I think we’re actually a better band than we were when we stopped playing music together,” says Arlen. “A little bit more life experience for everybody, and people having made a bunch of records on their own.”

The result of this new consciousness is songs like “Valley Boy”, a Bowie-inflected anthem for which Spencer wrote lyrics after Leonard Cohen died the day before the 2016 election (“The radio’s been playing all your songs, talking about the way you slipped away up the stairs, did you know that it was all gonna go wrong?”). “You’re Dreaming”, also influenced by the election and the spinning shock that followed, is driving, urgent power pop that draws from artists like Tom Petty and what Dan calls one of his “default languages” for writing music. The swirly, synth-heavy crescendo of “Artificial Life” takes on the struggle of artists and at-risk communities (“If the flood should ever come, we’ll be last in the lifeboat”).

The album carries a sense of uprising that is not unrelated to Wolf Parade’s renewed determination to drive the band forward in uncertain times. Welcome to Cry Cry Cry.

Liars present the new video for “Cred Woes”; ‘TFCF’ out now

by the partae August 31, 2017
written by the partae

LIARS PRESENT THE NEW VIDEO FOR “CRED WOES” Taken from the new album TFCF Out now on Mute via [PIAS]

LIARS have shared a brand new video for “Cred Woes“, following the release of TFCF – out now on Mute via [PIAS].

“Cred Woes” is the first track to be released from TFCF (which stands for Theme From Crying Fountain), and the new video is directed by Yoonha Park, who previously worked with the band on the video for “Pro Anti Anti“, from 2014’s MESS.

Liars have, as a matter of course, sounded radically different with each album, pursuing new concepts and occupying diverse mindsets. On this, Liars’ eighth studio album, the bustling backdrops of Los Angeles, Berlin and New York have been replaced with a presence far more intimate and autobiographical as Liars once again boldly step out of their comfort zone into vastly new musical territory.

Angus Andrew decamped to his native Australia, specifically to a remote part of the Australian bush, to create an album unlike any Liars had attempted before. Cut off from the rest of the world in his remote home studio, with no other distractions, Angus gave free reign to artistic impulses he’d never explored and those included experimenting with the acoustic guitar and sampling.

The album’s reinvention of the Liars paradigm – blurring the lines between electronic and acoustic, between the experimental impulse and the addictive pop sensibility – is evidence that Angus’ creative energies remain as healthy as ever.

TFCF was written and recorded by Liars (Angus Andrew). Butchy Fuego, who performed live with Liars following Julian Gross’ departure in 2014, plays drums on three tracks. TFCF was mixed by Gareth Jones and mastered by Christian Wright.

PRAISE FOR TFCF

“Stands out as one of the finest in a remarkable set that
few of their peers have come close to.
”
The Quietus

“A fitting testament to Liars’ legacy.”
Pitchfork

“’TFCF’ signals yet another rebirth.”
Spin

“Although Liars may constantly evolve, their high quality
output is undeniably reliable.
”
The Line Of Best Fit

“Liars has always been about expecting the unexpected…
TFCF demonstrates that Andrew has always been the
beating heart of Liars. This time, the unexpected was
hearing him bare his without any uncertainty.

? CLIENT LIAISON ? share video for ‘A Foreign Affair’

CLIENT LIAISON Share video for ‘A Foreign Affair’ A Foreign Affair tour continues tonight in Melbourne

Diplomatic Immunity: granted. Passports: stamped. Tina Arena: boarded. Today, Client Liaison share the new video for single ‘A Foreign Affair‘ taken from their album Diplomatic Immunity, out now via Dot Dash / Remote Control Records. Watch the video via the image below.

Of the video, director Tim White shares: “Long before automated check-in and liquids in zip-lock bags there was a time when the journey mattered more than the destination. This video is an ode to those glory years of aviation; when the airport was alive with mystique and prestige. ‘A Foreign Affair’ is an aeronautical love story exploring the elegant complexities of transit; the feeling of anonymity in the business class lounge and sense of community of the in-flight experience.’

On working with the duo, Tina Arena says “It’s been a lot of fun working with Client Liaison, from recording the song last summer and to crashing their set at Splendour, this clip ties it all together nicely! Grab a gin & tonic and get ready for take-off.”

Celebrating the international release of their critically acclaimed debut album Diplomatic Immunity and their collaboration with Tina Arena, the A Foreign Affair World Tour will reward audiences worldwide with Client Liaison’s biggest production yet. The tour will be the final instalment of their journey through the Diplomatic Cocktail Circuit, starting in Australia’s most loved venues, with domestic support from local dignitaries Total Giovanni, and MUKI. The Foreign Affair World Tour will then launch into New Zealand, Europe and The United States of America with all info currently under embargo while details are being confirmed with relevant embassies. Shows to be announced soon.

Lost in what was once a dream
Of leg room and in-flight cuisine
Exists to those who fly
Can sleep safe and sail through the night

Tickets available through www.clientliaison.com.

Diplomatic Immunity is available as double gatefold vinyl in off white. Order here.

This send-off is fantasy. Which is what makes it true. Diplomatic Immunity for the last time with Client Liaison and you.

“Diplomatic Immunity is among the best pop records Australia will get this year… the songs are undeniable.” – The Guardian, ★★★★

“Diplomatic Immunity [possesses] glossy pop smarts, surprising collaborations (Tina Arena on A Foreign Affair), long-time set-list mainstays (Hotel Stay) and welcome new additions, such as pastel funk workout Off White Limousine. They successfully return investment based on their previous promise.” – The Age, ★★★☆
