ALICE COOPER REUNITES WITH ORIGINAL BAND FOR MUSIC INDUSTRY ASSOCIATION WEEK AWARD

by the partae May 31, 2017
written by the partae

NEW SINGLE “PARANOIC PERSONALITY” OUT JUNE 9TH

Fans of rock icon Alice Cooper know there are some aspects to his live shows that they can expect, including a hard rocking performance of horror theatrics; however, following Alice Cooper’s customary execution via guillotine at his recent Nashville concert on May 14th, fans were treated to something rarely seen since 1975. The stage went dark, and the original band, including bassist Dennis Dunaway, guitarist Michael Bruce and drummer Neal Smith reunited to perform five classic songs with Alice. This followed the recent announcement that his forthcoming album –

Paranormal, out July 28th on earMUSIC – will include two new recordings featuring the original line-up.

Joined by current band member Ryan Roxie filling in for the late Glen Buxton on guitar, the band ripped through “I’m 18,” “No More Mr Nice Guy,” “Muscle of Love,” “Billion Dollar Babies” and then closed with “School’s Out,” bringing back current band members drummer Glen Sobel, bassist Chuck Garric, and guitarists Nita Strauss and Tommy Henriksen for a grande finale.

The following day, the original band was honored by The Music Business Association at their annual convention, with an award for their historic achievements.  The award was presented to them by Bob Ezrin, who produced their iconic albums Love It To Death, Killer, School’s Out, and Billion Dollar Babies as well as many subsequent solo Alice Cooper albums, including the forthcoming Paranormal.

Paranormal features two songs written and recorded with original members – Alice, Dennis, Neal and Michael, as well as guest appearances by ZZ Top guitarist Billy Gibbons, U2 drummer Larry Mullen, and Deep Purple bassist Roger Glover. The first single, “Paranoic Personality” will be released Friday, June 9th.

Alice Cooper is on tour throughout the 2017. Full North American tour dates below.

“Upbeat but undeniably nervy melodies.” – Paste

“Sharp songwriting sensibilities.” – Stereogum

“Chock full of Pavement-loving guitars and hazy melancholia.” – DIY

“Mise En Place reaches triumphant heights with a recipe of refreshingly satisfying flavors.” – Austin Monthly

More on Mise En Place:

Austin-based quartet Alex Napping draws from the deeply personal and the sonically groovy to create storytelling with a beat.  Founded in 2013, the group includes lead singer and guitarist Alex Cohen, guitarist Adrian Sebastian Haynes, bassist Tomas Garcia-olano, and drummer Andrew Stevens.

In 2014, the band released their debut album, This Is Not A Bedroom, on Punctum Records. With a guitar-focused sound, this first release reflects nostalgia for early romance and self-discovery, drawing from collective conversations about youth and its limitations. As an expansion of the themes found in Bedroom, Alex Napping released Trembles Part I & II in 2016, a pair of expressive singles hinging on a short story composed by Cohen. Trembles caught the ear of both NPR and BBC Radio 1, earning featured spots on their respective SXSW coverage.

Mise En Place, the band’s sophomore full-length, weaves together the uncertainty of adulthood with a personal desire to establish existential structure. It also marks the band’s first release with San Francisco-based Father/Daughter Records. Revolving around a formative relationship, this album tells the story of Cohen’s conflicting roles as both person and partner while highlighting a sophisticated, dimensional sound from the band at large. In Mise En Place, arrangements take center stage, overwhelming the guitar-centric sound that had dominated their early releases. This new band dynamic comes together articulately in the album’s lead single, “Living Room.”  Moody and honest, with tracks that express both joy and isolation, Mise En Place explores the struggle to evade traditionalism, define personal success, and balance the expectations of love.

PAIGEY CAKEY

by the partae May 31, 2017
written by the partae

What is your name and role within the band?

My name is Paigey Cakey and I’m a rapper / actress from East London, Hackney.

How did you start?

I used to make music in my spare time as a hobby. I would write songs and show them to my mum. In school I went on to study music and acting as a GCSE. It was here where I really developed a passion for music. I then went on to release the track I had made for my school exam on YouTube. It got over 10k views and a great reaction on my Facebook page. This is where my career took off.

Where are you based?

I am based in East London, Hackney.

Please give an example of your music writing process?

I like to write In the studio whilst the producers create the beat. I find inspiration through things I see on a everyday basic or how I feel.

What are you working on right now?

I’m working on loads of new music for this year. I’ve created a few dope tracks for the summer which I’ll be releasing from June onwards. I’ve got enough tracks to drop a project towards the ending of the year too.

What is your gear setup?

I have a small studio set up in my bedroom which I use to lay ideas. My setup is a MacBook, soundcard mixer, speaker and mic.

When I record in the bigger studios everything is there.

What do you like to do outside of music and does it affect your music?

When I’m not making music I love to visit friends, online shop or go out and do something fun like trampolining or roller skating. I also act so if I get an acting job in a film or series I have to prioritise my time between music and acting.

How would you describe your music genre?

I would describe my music as being very fun and bouncy. It’s almost like a groovy hip-hop sound. I am very versatile and have songs in all different genres ranging from reggae to house.

What are your plans for the future?

My plans for the future are to keep making music, make an album, do a European tour and just work my way up to the top.

What are you listening to at the moment?

I’m listening to drakes album, ‘More Life’ and a lot of UK music such a J Hus, Mostack and Yxng Bane.

Who are your top 5 influences and icons?

My top 5 influences and icons are Missy Elliott, Ms Dynamite, Teedra Moses, So Solid Crew & Tupac.

When are you playing next?

I’m performing this Saturday in Doncaster, as part of a tour I’m doing called ‘Alchemy Tour’.

Please feel free to include any extra info.

MANCEROW

by the partae May 31, 2017
written by the partae

What is your name and role within Mancerow?

We are Maxime and Romain. We are both Dj’s and producers in the project we called « Mancerow »

How did you start?

We met 2 years ago while partying. We started to play for fun at home, some friends were with us very often and at some point they told us that we should try to do something serious about it. So we decided to create our duo, we found the name, and we never stoped working on it since then.

Where are you based?

Paris, France.

Please give an example of your music writing process?

Romain : I’m usually the first to work on a track. I prepare some loops, with just one Kick drum, I create then a bassline, then the chords, and I add one or two ideas for the drums on it.

Maxime : after all that I listen to that loop, then, I create all the drums elements, to add a bouncy rhythm on the track. At this point we have the final loop as I like to call it. If everything works, I start editing the track, putting all the parts together, then we both listen to the track, and finally we work together to see if some parts has to go off the tracks and which parts are going to stay in it.

What are you working on right now?

We work on several things, things that we don’t really want to talk about. Because we don’t want to bring bad luck on us.

What is your gear setup?

Maxime : For our gigs, we like to play on the CDJ’s  but at home, we like to spin the vinyls.

Romain : For the productions  we use Logic Pro X with a whole lot of plug-ins and some hardware like Komplete Kontrol or the UC-33.

What do you like to do outside of music and does it affect your music?

We like sports, we like to get together with our friends, watch soccer games, and play FIFA of course. .

To be honest there’s not much we do outside of music because when we’re not working on our sound, we usually listen to everything that’s being released. We even go to some events like art exhibition to find some inspirations. We always do things that will help us through our work.

How would you describe your music genre?

We don’t like to put a label on it. It’s pretty much all about the groove, could be house, could be micro-house, could more of a techno sound, as long as it’s groovy, we like it.

Do you know any music theory?

Romain : I learned music theory for three years and I played the guitar for about 10 years.

Maxime : I never learned to play any instruments, I come from a family of musicians, they taught me the basics.

What are your plans for the future?

To be able to throw our good vibe on people, that’s the plan.

How did you get into music?

Romain : My father is a music addict and my mother always liked to dance so, they gave me the virus.

Maxime : As I said, I come from a family of musicians, so they gave me the love for the music and the sensitivity for it.

What are you listening to at the moment?

Romain : Cinthie – Back to Garage (Original mix), this track defines everything I like on a house record, the groove, the chords etc.

Maxime : Shonky – The Minneapolis Touch (Original Mix) an old Shonky record released on Apollonia music 6 or 7 years ago, I love this tune, never gets old.

Who are your top 5 influences and icons?

Maxime : Red Hot Chili Peppers, The Doors, Oasis, Oliver Cheatham, Nirvana.

Romain : Laurent Garnier, Led Zeppelin, Jimi Hendrix, David Bowie, Pink Floyd.

When are you playing next?

June 15th at La Plage du Glazart in Paris with Grego G and Phil Dark.

FLOATING POINTS SHARES “KELSO DUNES” FROM REFLECTIONS – MOJAVE DESERT PROJECT

by the partae May 31, 2017
written by the partae

Out Friday June 30 on Pod via Inertia Music
World Premiere set for June 29 streamed via Boiler Room
from Barbican Theatre, London

Following on from the previously shared “Silurian Blue“, Floating Points has unveiled another track from the forthcoming short film and soundtrack Reflections – Mojave Desert, out on Friday June 30 on POD via Inertia Music. The soaring single-edit of “Kelso Dunes” captures Floating Points performing at the foot of dramatic rock formations as the sun fades. The full 12-minute version of “Kelso Dunes” will be available on the full release.

Listen/watch “Kelso Dunes” (edit) below:

Reflections – Mojave Desert finds Floating Points aka Sam Shepherd and his band exploring the sonic environment of the Mojave Desert outside Joshua Tree in this thrilling film shot on location last year.

The world premiere of the film will take place on Thursday June 29 at The Barbican Theatre in London and Boiler Room will host the global live stream of the event. The screening will be followed by a Q&A with Shepherd and film director Anna Diaz Ortuño, and hosted by Boiler Room’s Head of Music Raj Chaudhuri.

The first in a planned series of environmental recordings by Floating Points to be filmed and recorded at different locations around the world; the recording was made last year, as Floating Points travelled to the Mojave to rehearse in between US touring. Immediately struck by the distinct sonic tapestry created by the rock formations and valleys, Sam and the band set up a recording operation and filmed this new work at the base of the natural sculptures they encountered. The music of Reflections – Mojave Desert mirrors the landscape: soaring and vast, dynamic and intimate, centred around two longer works and shorter pieces that create a singular and seamless 27-minute experience.

One of London’s most sought-after DJs, producers and live entities, Floating Points has toured with The xx – supporting their record breaking string of dates at Brixton Academy, collaborated with Caribou, Four Tet, and has performed across the globe including festivals like Glastonbury, Primavera, Pitchfork Festival Europe, Coachella and a well received closing set at St. Jerome’s Laneway Festival across Australia. Floating Points’ debut LP Elaenia was deemed Resident Advisor’s Album of the Year in 2015, an accolade vehemently supported by many here in the Inertia office. This was followed by the Kuiper EP in 2016.

Reflections – Mojave Desert features five entirely new compositions, and is available digitally and physically as LP+DVD or CD/DVD packages on Friday June 30 on Pod via Inertia Music.

ACID TONGUE

by the partae May 31, 2017
written by the partae

What is your name and role within the band?

Guy, vocals, guitar, primary songwriter.

How did you start?

In my basement in Seattle during Super Bowl XLIX, when Pete Carroll flubbed that call to pass in the final seconds. We had this idea to create a sort of art project, fusing our drummer Ian’s stoney cartoons with my tongue-in-cheek soul tunes. We want to create a sort of modern KISS, but without the shameless materialism that KISS promoted back in the 1970s.

Where are you based?

Splitting time between Brooklyn and LA. We are still a Seattle band at heart, though, and we make every effort to get back to the Pacific Northwest when we can. We recorded our debut LP at Get Loud Studios in Portland with producer Matt Drenik.

Please give an example of your music writing process?

I like to let things come to me. I’ve come up with a lot of songs in dreams. Sometimes I wake up at 4am and need to record a voice memo on my iPhone so that I don’t forget some chorus, lyrical element, or melody.

What are you working on right now?

We just finished our first LP. It’ll come out in August. I’m recording the follow-up right now. We’ll be flying back to Portland a couple times in the next few months to finish up this second LP, so that when our debut drops we’ll already be one album ahead.

What is your gear setup?

My gear varies from show to show. I perform locally with a custom made guitar that my good friend Al Kaatz in Washington built for me. I have a sponsorship with Gibson, though, so I usually tour with SGs or 335s. I’m a big fan of a darker tone, so I tune down a step and use heavier strings and P-90s in most of my guitars.

For pedals, I love my Recovery Effects Couple Skate fuzz and Electric overdrive. I also use a my Boss Tremelo and Mad Professor Delay on a majority of our tunes. I have a couple of cheap chorus and flange pedals that I bought on Amazon and get a lot more use then I ever expected.

What do you like to do outside of music and does it affect your music?

I love to cook and read. Both have a huge effect on my music. You are what you eat. And read. Sometimes I regurgitate thoughts and ideas from whatever book or author I’m into at the moment. I always make sure the band eats well on tour, I’m sure that affects how we perform. We’re not a KFC/Taco Bell kinda group. You can definitely eat cheap and still find amazing food all over this country.

How would you describe your music genre?

Cartoon Soul. There’s a lot of humor in our music, without any of it being overtly funny. I mean everything I’m singing about, and all of our songs are delivered straight from the soul. There’s a passion to everything, even when things take a turn for the outlandish.

Do you know any music theory?

Only the fun stuff.

What are your plans for the future?

I’m getting my teeth cleaned in Manhattan right now and then I’m going to grab a slice at Joe’s. I’m excited to tour in Europe again this Fall because of all the delicious food. I’m going to eat my way around the world.

How did you get into music?

Music got into me. My parents were both very into live music, especially blues and old R&B artists. One of the first shows I can remember was seeing John Lee Hooker at a Fair in Orange County. They were dragging me to see all these amazing artists like Etta James when I was barely able to walk.

What are you listening to at the moment?

Pharoah Sanders and a lot of Kamasi Washington. Big jazz kick the last few weeks. I’m also bumping a lot of trap music when we’re on the road, mostly to bug the hell out of my bassist, and also because trap music rules. We were covering ‘Broccoli’ by D.R.A.M. during our sound checks on our SXSW tour.

Who are your top 5 influences and icons?

David Bowie, Kurt Vonnegut, James Brown, Jack White and RZA.

And I’ve definitely got to add Anthony Bourdain as an honorable mention.

When are you playing next?

Friday May 26th at Alphaville in Brooklyn, Saturday June 3rd at Berlin in Manhattan, and then we hit the road on June 16th for an East Coast and Souther US tour.

TIM O’BRIEN

by the partae May 31, 2017
written by the partae

What is your name and role within the band?

El Jefe, sole proprietor.

How did you start?

With a 30 dollar guitar and a Beatles songbook.

Where are you based?

Nashville Tennessee, USA.

Please give an example of your music writing process?

I take notes on various scraps of paper, then I put them into a big pile and sort through them, usually a lot later. But the best songs come out, lyrics and music, all at once. In those cases the subject matter is usually something I’ve thought about a lot, then some little phrase unlocks it into a song.

What are you working on right now?

My old Bluegrass band Hot Rize is looking for new material, so I was just getting a few demos together for consideration.

What is your gear setup?

I have mini condenser mics and piezo pickups on my guitar, fiddle, and mandolin. I use DTAR preamps which mixes the two signals into one that’s user friendly to the front of house engineer.

What do you like to do outside of music and does it affect your music?

I like to cook and study history. Cooking can be creative in much the same way as writing a song or playing a set. What is available and how should I use it? History often mirrors our current day situation so it helps to inform the songs.

How would you describe your music genre?

They call it Americana, but it’s a grab bag of folk music updated for modern heads and hands.

Do you know any music theory?

I know more music theory than I really need to know. A lot of times the music is better when the rules and laws are subtly broken.

What are your plans for the future?

I’ll keep working this music, I hope to eventually get it right.

How did you get into music?

Music always rang in my head long after it would stop, so I guess I took up stringed instruments to help it keep ringing longer. Before I ever played an instrument, I would sing harmony quietly beside my sister in church and she’d look at me funny. The sound just seemed to ask for it.

What are you listening to at the moment?

I like David Olney’s new record and I’ve been on a Mose Alison jag since his passing.

Who are your top 5 influences and icons?

Hank Williams, Bill Monroe, Count Basie, Bob Dylan, Ry Cooder.

When are you playing next?

June 4 in Ogden Utah.

Please feel free to include any extra info.

I began writing dance tracks in high school in 1992 with a friend of mine after going to a few parties and collecting some rave records at the time.  We eventually started trying to mimic the records we were collecting.

Where are you based?

Seattle, WA.

Please give an example of your music writing process?

Loop, replace, layer, replace, erase, replace, reverse, copy, paste, draw, loop, layer, stop….  replay… replay… replay… replay…  Add bassline, turn knobs.

What are you working on right now?

I’m working on the next record for my own label, Hunt & Gather. I’m also finishing up a remix for an artist called “Stimmhalt” for Damian Lazarus’s “RebelLion” imprint.

What is your gear setup?

Currently working on a machine running windows 10, 16gb ram.  Native Instruments Komplete, Maschine, Ableton and FL Studio.  All in the box.

What do you like to do outside of music and does it affect your music?

I spend time with my family, which I think forces me to step away and look at the larger picture about life in general. Focusing on a solid work/life balance is hugely grounding and really puts things into perspective.  I don’t take my work so seriously because I have such bigger things and scheduling to think about.

How would you describe your music genre?

Sound design meets house.

Do you know any music theory?

A little.  I was never properly trained, so what I understand about theory is the bits and pieces I’ve picked up from understanding how notes work together within the software I use.

What are your plans for the future?

I’m hoping to expand on my skillset and improve my performances…  release more records.

What are you listening to at the moment?

Robert Loyson, T Kimp Gee Jlin, Mura Masa, Om Unit.  Strangely not a lot of house music.

Who are your top 5 influences and icons?

Rampa, Jimpster, Jean-Michel Jarre, David Byrne, Brian Eno.

When are you playing next?

My next show is at the Deep End Block Party in San Diego July 2.

Please feel free to include any extra info.

written by the partae

“Lo Moon is one of those young bands that seemed to come out of nowhere, fully formed.” – The Los Angeles Times

“That mystery suits the band and keeps the focus on the music: big, gorgeous, sweeping, well-crafted songs that convey a lot of emotion but leave a lot of room for, well, mystery.” – WFUV

“Shimmering, immersive and otherworldly, ‘Loveless’ is a stop-you-in-your-tracks kind of song…The song has a big sound that’s as intimate as it is anthemic; all seven minutes are worthy of your attention.” – NPR

“They delivered a rousing set of beat-heavy dream pop with the gusto of seasoned vets.” – LA Record

“This four-piece, mysterious band has totally got the whole cool, dark vibes thing down to a tee…Lo Moon’s authentic passion and energy takes their coolness to a whole other level, a real level, which emerges through ultimate guitar shredding and genuine, kind words between songs.” – WXPN The Key

Bio:

Sleep In. was once marketed as the new project from Eric McNelis, who cut his teeth alongside scene staple Evan Weiss in The Progress. Sleep In.’s 2014 debut LP Settling was undoubtedly a conversation piece anchored in nostalgia for that project, its no-frills approach to angular indie rock diminished by its somewhat-star power. No longer searching for a point of entry, this Cherry Hill, NJ five-piece returns with the Tension & Release EP, their first for indie label Black Numbers.

Sleep In. began at the intersection between smoldering first impressions and charring afterthoughts, where the meat of their tracks negotiated between fireworks and graceful fades. The seven songs on Tension illustrate a different seesawing, whether in the band’s invertebrate guitars that split and fold, or vocals that cascade upwards beyond the confines of the EP’s cautious, yet bright rock construction. Instead of holding in their energy for one final explosion, the songs here truly find their sweet release, simmering to completion for delayed gratification and a continual process of exposure and exploration, whether in the drums that burble and snap or the storytelling that drifts inward more often than generalizing the band’s transitory phase.

On Tension & Release, Sleep In. has finally found their comfort zone while not abandoning their original home base, a genre-agnostic offering that is more a reflection of a whole than the sum of its parts.

FLATS STANLIE

by the partae May 31, 2017
written by the partae

What is your name and role within the band?

My name is Kollin Houghtaling and I am the founder and producer/DJ by the handle Flats Stanlie.

How did you start?

I got my start 3 1/2 years ago, I’ve been a musician since the age of 6 starting off with singing. When I reached the age of 11 I started to dabble with piano, now 13 years later I am completely self taught with all of my personal musical knowledge. Producing didn’t come to me until I was 20 about to be 21. I’ve always loved electronic music and after watching some of my greatest influences (Zeds Dead, RL Grime, and Keys N Krates) I decided it was my time to start really pursuing my passion; music.

Where are you based?

I was born and raised in Grand Haven, Michigan. I have traveled all over the U.S but I still reside in my hometown.

Please give an example of your music writing process?

My music writing process differs with every track I make. But always ends with me working them in similar ways. If I am working with samples, I start with either vocals or a lead sample and I’ll start to develop different melodies/drum/bass patterns around those samples to better fit the track I’m working on. If I am starting from scratch I will tend to start with a melody and then create drum/bass patterns around the melodies. Most of the time I tend to be a perfectionist and will get entire tracks done and restart them because I don’t enjoy the flow of them enough. I want to make sure I am producing quality over quantity. Giving each listener a unique experience and having each have different opinions about my music. Makes for great feedback on which way to head next.

What are you working on right now?

I’ve released two singles in the past month. The first single I released is called “Pulse” which is off my upcoming “Digital Astronauts” EP dropping Wednesday, June 28th. The second single is called “Like This.” which I released 3 days ago and is climbing faster than any other track I have released in the past 4 months. I am currently working on a plethora of projects in a timely matter with some have release dates but most do not. This includes originals, promotional mixes, and remixes.

What is your gear setup?

My gear set up for live playing is a Pioneer DDJ-SR and a MacBook Pro. My producing set up is a pair of studio monitors and windows computer with FL Studio 12.

What do you like to do outside of music and does it affect your music?

My hobbies outside of music consist of long boarding, slack lining (a form of tight rope walking), hanging out with friends who aren’t musicians to be able to break myself away from the creative process and escape the work flow, also I spend a lot of time with my beautiful lady and my cat. Most of the time I find inspiration everywhere I go but I tend to try and escape from the studio just to enjoy the little things in life. Otherwise I’d drive myself insane.

How would you describe your music genre?

The genre of music I am pushing is called Astrobass. The genre is based off Future Bass with a Future Funk twist and more of a cosmic influence. But I am very diverse with my sound, I never stick to one sound or genre.

Do you know any music theory?

I know music theory but like I said before everything I know is self taught or something I picked up from other musicians.

What are your plans for the future?

My plans for the future (long term) are to be able to share/play my music worldwide. My short term goal is to be able to share/play my music throughout the U.S.

How did you get into music?

I got into music at an early age. I sang in choir during school, I taught myself piano, and then in my adult years I started to produce and DJ. I am currently touring the country playing 7 festivals from coast to coast. I’ve always loved music and I’ve always wanted to be able to play in front of crowds and see their reactions when I play my own music.

What are you listening to at the moment?

I am currently listening to a lot of different producers/ live instrumentalists from all over the world. At the moment I can’t stop listening to Freddy Todd, Russ Liquid, Manic Focus, and GRiZ.

Who are your top 5 influences and icons?

1.) GRiZ

2.) Zeds Dead

3.) Manic Focus

4.) Atmosphere

5.) C2C

When are you playing next?

I play this weekend in Mariposa, California at The Untz Festival. Then the next festival after that is Sonic Bloom in Colorado.

Please feel free to include any extra info.

I love what I do, and I hope you do too.

DINOSAUR PILE UP

by the partae May 31, 2017
written by the partae

What is your name and role within the band?

I am Jim, and I play bass in DPU.

How did you start?

Matt started the band in Leeds, UK in 2008 as a kind of solo project, playing with friends in a revolving door sort of fashion. He saw Mikey drumming at a show in Norwich, Mikey’s home town, and instantly wanted him in the band, I guess that would have been in 2010/11? Mikey dropped everything, stuck his mattress in a van with a bag of clothes and moved to Leeds.

I was playing in various other bands, and we toured the UK together in Dinosaur’s early days. Matt and I have been good friends ever since, and I’ve always been a massive fan of DPU and what they were doing. I joined in 2014, when my old band quit.

The rest, as they say, is history.

Where are you based?

We’ve since all moved to London, although we are never really there.

Please give an example of your music writing process?

So, most of the time, Matt will write pretty much alone… he’ll bring a song that’s 90% done to a rehearsal, and we’ll pad it out together. Other times, it won’t be more than a riff, or a basic idea, and there’s more of a group effort to get it finished. Matt wrote, recorded and co produced the first two records on his own, so he know’s what he’s doing! The third record, Eleven Eleven, we recorded together in Wales, Mikey and I were present through the whole process. It’s a good way to work, there’s a solid direction, and everyone gets an input.

What are you working on right now?

We’re always working on new stuff. Matt’s ALWAYS writing. I’m in the RV right now sat across from him. He’s writing as we storm down the I-70 to St. Louis. His laptop is vibrating on the table, i dunno how he’s doing it.

We’re constantly on the road these days, so soundchecks are the only real time we get to soundboard new ideas, but it’s a productive process. I imagine we’ll be playing new material on our July tour with Chevelle.

What is your gear setup?

Mine’s pretty simple.  I play a Fender Jazz through an Ampeg SVT Classic, with a Big Muff fuzz pedal. That’s it.

Mikey plays a Tama Star Classic 4 pcs kit with vater drum sticks and a shit load of power. Seriously the hardest hitter I’ve ever seen.

Matt’s set up is a little more complex. We’re not fans of playing to backing track, it’s lame and lazy, so he splits his signal to a second amp for riffs and choruses. We’re a three piece, so doing this helps fill those gaps that are on the record, and adds more weight when we have to step up a gear.

He plays a Gibson Explorer through two Marshall stacks. Pedals wise, it’s a Big Muff fuzz, and a custom distortion given to him by Jesse of Brand New. It’s KILLER, but no one knows what it really is. An AB-Y pedal provides the split. He also uses a TC Chorus pedal on that second amp, which really makes it soar.

What do you like to do outside of music and does it affect your music?

Honestly, we don’t get much time to do anything else! Eleven Eleven was written on the road pretty much, and it does sum up where we were at the time.

How would you describe your music genre?

Pop-Melody-Influenced-Heavy-Alt-Rock. Catchy huh.

Do you know any music theory?

Nah. I learned to play piano when I was young but that info has long since fallen out my head. We’re all self taught in our current disciplines.

What are your plans for the future?

We just want to do this forever. Keep touring as much as we can. We’re in a good place at the moment.

How did you get into music?

An old friend taught me to play Redemption Song on a camping trip when I was about 12? I then asked for a guitar for my birthday, and sat around learning Deftones and RATM songs in my room. My first band did RATM cover medleys and shit. Then, when I was 19, I was down in London at art school, and this dude from back home called me up and was ‘my bass player quit wanna fill in?’. That was the first time I ever played bass.

What are you listening to at the moment?

Anything. Mikey’s the best DJ the world has ever seen, his repertoire is more diverse than Spotify. I swear. The other night we were giving country music a try, not sure how I feel about it! Right now Lil’ Dicky is on. In a minute it’ll probably be Norma Jean. Variety is the spice of life. And a good song is a good song, regardless of genre.

Who are your top 5 influences and icons?

We all were kind of bought up on the same stuff really. None of us knew each other as kids, but our first CD’s were all similar. Weezer, Nirvana, Pumpkins, Deftones, Rage Against The Machine. Stuff like that.

I guess as a three, those bands are our major influences. They’re the reason we all got into music.

When are you playing next?

We’re on our way to St. Louis to play at Delmar Hall. Tomorrow is Rocklahoma, then we’re going home for a few days. Next up, we’re out with Coheed and Cambria thru Europe and UK before coming back state side in July for another Chevelle run. Boom.

Please feel free to include any extra info.

Instagram and Facebook are our favourite platforms, and we’re always keen to engage with people on them. We’re also on Twitter, so all of them really. We run everything ourselves and are stoked when people want to get in touch.

Los Angeles artist/producer Elohim has released the arresting official video for new single “Skinny Legs,” which debuted with Highsnobiety HERE.

Twisting eerily through high contrast visuals and downright chilling sequences, the Megan Park-directed video brings Elohim’s multi-dimensional world to the forefront showcasing that there really are no limits to what she is capable of. Released last month via B3SCI Records, “Skinny Legs” debuted with Zane Lowe on Beats 1 (Apple Music) and is a bold testament to Elohim’s fast upward momentum, showcasing some of her most confident and audacious production work to-date.
“Skinny Legs” comes on the heels of a collaboration with Chicago duo Louis The Child titled “Love Is Alive (ft. Elohim).” The Ultra Music release featured Elohim as a co-producer, co-writer, and featured vocalist.

Late 2016 was marked by the release of new single “Hallucinating,” which Wonderland Magazine coined “Mariachi meets new-wave.” The official video for the track, also directed by Megan Park, brims with stellar cinematography, vibrant color palettes.
Having toured alongside acts such as Louis The Child, Jai Wolf, Gryffin, and Eden, and following a sold out LA show @ Echoplex this Spring, Elohim has taken her extra-sensory show to wider festival audiences this year. With Coachella, Middlelands, Skyline Festival, Summer Camp, and Lightning in a Bottle under her belt, she will continue her 2017 run at the following dates:

June 15 // Dover, DE @ Firefly

Aug 3 // Chicago, IL @ Lollapalooza

Elohim’s self-titled debut EP was released last year via B3SCI Records, available now on limited edition CD and gatefold 12″ vinyl. EP lead single “Sensations” notched another Spotify ‘New MusicFriday’ add and EP track “Guts” debuted on Beats 1. A classically-trained pianist, Elohim first debuted with “She Talks Too Much” and “Xanax,” which saw a release as a 12″ via B3SCI Records. Elohim followed with a second 12″ via B3SCI featuring the exuberant “Bridge and the Wall” and elegantly emotive “Pigments,” which was released alongside a NERDIST–approved interactive video.
Elohim has also forged notable rap/hip-hop collaborations, dropping tracks with former Odd Future member Casey Veggies on track “All That Gold” (of which she remixed herself) and a new Darnell Williams single alongside Denzel Curry.
Elohim is not only a top artist to watch in 2017 but a game-changer in forward-thinking electronic music, reinventing her artistry and bending her production prowess with each new release. Be on the lookout for additional shows and more to come from Elohim in 2017.
