TORRES Three Futures out today!
PRAISE FOR THREE FUTURES
“Three Futures is an album swathed in texture and rumination which makes it an album that requires – and rewards – repeated listens. However, they are also signs that Scott is comfortable laying everything out and having us approach and patiently root through it.”
– The Line of Best Fit, 8/10
“dripping as it is with lust and longing, the sort that flirts [with the line between sexy and scary]” – i-D
“The album is a hideous, beautiful thing, full of repetition and snarling choruses deployed as carefully as iron-jawed traps.”
– The Brag, AOTW
TORRES, the creative alter-ego of Mackenzie Scott, has released her new album Three Futures today via 4AD / Remote Control.
TORRES is the creative alter-ego of Brooklyn-based Mackenzie Scott. In describing the album, Scottsays it “is entirely about using the body that each of us has been given as a mechanism of joy.” The 10 original tracks on Three Futures embrace ecstasy, desire and indulgence rather than self-denial, and exude this idea via immersive music. Mechanised grooves are placed at the forefront, providing a framework for perforated electro-pop static, harsh gothic / industrial textures, and insistent Krautrock motifs.
Through it all, Scott remains a fluid and expressive vocalist: she employs a more animated, frantic delivery to convey the dark obsessive desires described in ‘Helen in the Woods,’ while elsewhere she exhibits a throaty, hollow timbre or takes a solemn, reverential approach.
For Three Futures, Scott reconnected with producer Rob Ellis (PJ Harvey), who worked on Torres’ last album Sprinter, to record in Stockport and Dorset, England. David Tolomei (Beach House, Future Islands) mixed the album.
Following Sprinter‘s release in 2015, Torres gained critical acclaim from numerous influential publications, including Pitchfork and the New York Times.
